Fox Television Studios has snared The Walking Dead showrunner, executive producer, and writer Glen Mazzara and inked him to a major deal. Mazzara will develop a variety of cable television projects for the studio under his new banner, 44 Strong Productions. “Like all television studios we’re writer-oriented, but since we’re leaner than most, the people we’re in business with need to possess a profound level of fierceness and obsession, and Glen eminently qualifies,” said Fox studio president David Madden. Mazzara already has a history with Fox. He spent six seasons as a writer and producer on FX’s groundbreaking series The Shield, produced by Fox Television Studios. “FTVS is giving me the opportunity to develop my own projects and to shepherd other writers on their own shows,” said Mazzara.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Academy Award winning director Ang Lee is set to make his television directorial debut. Lee will direct the FX drama pilot Tyrant from FOX21 and FX Productions, his first project since Life of Pi. “No one could be a more perfect film maker to bring Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff, and Craig Wright’s Tyrant to indelible life,” said John Landgraf, President and General Manager, FX Networks.

Showtime Networks Inc. has extended its exclusive output agreement with The Walt Disney Studios to continue to air DreamWorks Studios’ films theatrically released by Disney through 2018. The films will air across Showtime, The Movie Channel, and Flix, as well as its multiplex channels.

Chris Hayes is moving to MSNBC‘s primetime lineup. The journalist, who has hosted the weekend morning show Up With Chris Hayes since September 2011, is slipping into the 8p slot. He’ll fill the void left by Ed Schultz, whose program The Ed Show, is moving to the weekends.

CBS Corporation has launched a new CBS App for iPhone and iPad users, offering full-episode streaming of its programming from primetime, daytime and late night. It will offer original and second-screen features for NCIS, The Good Wife and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation among many others. Daytime and late night programming will be available within 24 hours after initial airing, while most primetime programs will be available on the eighth day after broadcast. CBS will introduce similar full-episode streaming apps for all major mobile and tablet platforms later this year, including Android and Windows 8.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Entertainment Studios, Inc. has announced that Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen has been renewed for two additional seasons on 14 CBS owned and operated stations, including New York (WCBS TV), Los Angeles (KCBS TV), and Chicago (WBBM TV) for Fall 2013 and Fall 2014.The series, which has a firm pickup for seasons 8 and 9, airs immediately after The Late Show with Craig Ferguson in all three markets.

Marathons will start on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17, from 3-11p, followed by a week-long primetime tribute to each of the characters. Then, fans take over the air. Viewers can go online now and choose their favorite episodes on TV Land’s Facebook Page, then watch the results on Friday, March 22 from 7-10p. After launch week, the show will settle into its regular time slot at 7p, Monday through Saturday, and 5p on Sundays.
