Olsen was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining in 2009. Olsen was an All-American at his alma mater, Utah State and a first-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 1962. Olsen, along with Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier became the Rams’ famous “Fearsome Foursome” defensive line. To this day, Olsen is still the Rams’ leader in career tackles with 915. Olsen retired from pro football in 1976 and was voted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. Olsen’s football career was succeeded by a television acting career which included the family series Little House on the Prairie followed by a starring turn in his own series Father Murphy from 1981-1983 and the short-lived series Aaron’s Way in 1988. This last December, Utah State honored Olsen by naming the football field at Romney Stadium “Merlin Olsen Field.” Utah State will also erect a statue of Olsen at the stadium. Additionally during the Rams’ game on December 20, the team paid a video tribute to Olsen, narrated by Olsen’s former broadcast partner, Dick Enberg.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Disney-ABC Domestic Television, a unit of The Walt Disney Company and Showtime Networks Inc. made an exclusive output deal whereby 35 of DreamWorks Studios’ films will air on the network between this year and 2015. This deal complements Showtime’s previous output agreements with Summit Entertainment, The Weinstein Company, Miramax and CBS Films.

In another output agreement, Starz Entertainment, LLC made a new exclusive deal extension with Disney-ABC Domestic Television involving theatrical releases under The Walt Disney Studios through 2015. The previous deal between the two entities was through 2012. This extension agreement gives Starz the exclusive pay TV rights to air Walt Disney Studios live-action and animated feature films, including those from Marvel Entertainment, Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Disney-Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures on Starz, Encore and MoviePlex linear channels and its companion on-demand and IP-based services in standard and hi-def.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Soon after announcing he would be part of the next Dancing with the Stars celebrity line-up on ABC, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco, will also have his own reality show on VH1 called The Tournament (wt). Ocho Cinco (formerly Chad Johnson) will go in search of women interested in dating him in this 10-episode, one-hour series set to debut in July 2010. During the first episode, Ocho Cinco will narrow his selection down to four women from each of the four regions of the US, Northern, Western, Southern and Central. The sixteen female contestants will join Ocho Cinco in a tournament-style dating competition. The series is produced by JUMA Entertainment and 51 Minds Entertainment, LLC., an Endemol Company.

The CW has two more reality series on its development docket with one being a dance show called One Mass Dance where choreographers visit three cities to gather dancers for a mass dance routine in front of an unsuspecting audience. The project is from Stone & Co. and Warner Horizon. The other project from Mindcrime and 25/7 is a weight loss series called Shed to Wed where couples compete to lose weight before their weddings.

ABC ordered a game show pilot from producer Mark Burnett titled Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host, cites THR. The project will take two hosts who will match wits on various subjects with contestants found in a studio audience. One of the hosts will be telling the truth while the other is not, and the contestants will have to decide which one to trust. Casting is currently happening to find the two hosts. Mark Burnett Productions and Monkey Kingdom are producing the pilot.

Elisha Cuthbert (24, The Forgotten) landed the female lead role in ABC’s comedy pilot Happy Endings, per THR. The plot is about a bride (Cuthbert) and a groom who break up at the altar and afterward must work to maintain their mutual friendships.

NBC’s pilot Rockford Files added Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as Det. Dennis Becker, a friend to Rockford, cites THR.

KOFY-TV in San Francisco, owned by Granite Broadcasting hired the radio team of Fernando Ventura and Greg Sherrell as hosts for Fabulous Flicks with Fernando & Greg airing Sundays at 9p. The comedic duo will dish on their favorite movies. Currently, the pair hosts Fernando and Greg in the Morning in the Bay Area on CBS Radio’s KMVQ-FM, where they discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues openly and are a voice to the local LGBT community.

Bento Box Entertainment was selected as the production company for Bob’s Burgers, a 30m primetime animated series from 20th Century Fox Television. The project received a 13-episode order from FOX.  Loren Bouchard is the show’s creator and writer about a guy who operates a burger restaurant with his tightly-wound wife and three lazy kids. Bouchard and Jim Dauterive are showrunners while Bento Box’s head Mark McJimsey will produce.

Former CBS’ Survivor: Pearl Islands and Survivor: All-Stars contestant, Rupert Boneham signed with Big Cheese Media to star in a future reality series currently in development.

Casting Call: Bonanza Productions Inc. is hosting an open casting call seeking physically-challenged boys aged 10-13 who use a wheelchair to play an 11-year old character in a new 30m comedy pilot created by and starring Paul Reiser (Mad About You) for NBC. The character is described as a sweet, funny, intelligent kid who has a positive outlook. He loves sports, music and everyone he meets including adults. He also remembers everything and is very inquisitive, though he can also become anxious and obsessive about things. The character has also used a wheelchair since birth, so the casting agents are only looking for boys who use a wheelchair. The online search is now open and continues through March 19, 2010. Production for the pilot will take place in Los Angeles over one week, starting April 7. For more information or to submit, visit www.tvpilotcastingcall.com.
