CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

03/11/05

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 11, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Spike TV says it will dissolve its relationship with World Wrestling Entertainment at the end of the current season.  In a statement released late yesterday, Spike TV said: “After several months of negotiations, we have decided to end our discussions about extending our relationship with the WWE beyond September 2005.  Moving forward Spike TV will expand its investments in original programming and new acquisitions for its core audience.”   WWE was asked to comment, though did not in time for this morning’s publication.  Spike TV, formerly TNN – The National Network, contracted with WWE when Viacom originally purchased the network – then known as The Nashville Network, and it has been one of the network’s most viewed programs for the past five years.  While the Spike statement offered no reasons, it is known WWE was looking for an increase in licensing fees for the 52 week original series. Elsewhere at Viacom, UPN has the WWE Smackdown wrapped up for two more years.   Remember when WWE paid local TV stations to air the weekly matches?

NBC is reportedly in the final stages of extending ER’s stay (Warner Bros. TV) for two more years, taking the Thursday night drama thru the 2007-08 season, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Syndicated Network Television Association (SNTA) kicked off their day long SNTA Syndication Day yesterday in NYC with seven major syndication companies hosting a reported 600 registered media buyers.  Mitch Berg, President/SNTA, began his breakfast presentation saying that syndication ad sales was up 16% in 2004, equal to $3.9 billion.  He made several points during his presentation: syndication ratings are up this season as compared to network programming, with a particular strength in the daytime daypart; syndication delivers more consistently throughout the calendar year, even during the summer months; and the amount of reduced clutter in syndicated shows according to poll of SNTA members.  The gathering continued with a day of meetings between buyers an member distributors: 20th, King World, Buena Vista, Tribune, NBC Universal TV Distrib, Paramount and Warner Bros., and finished with an early evening soiree.

Spike TV has ordered a new reality series called Super Agent (NBC Universal Domestic TV Distrib), featuring a group of nine sports agents all looking to sign Shaun Cody, the USC football player who is considered a top draft pick for the NFL.  Spike has ordered 8 eps and has scheduled it to premiere on July 20, 2005.  Signed to host the series is Tony Gonzales of the Kansas City Chiefs.  The series finale is set for the day of the NFL draft.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Reverend Al Sharpton‘s recent complaints and proposals regarding violence in music are being heeded in the media industry.  The Reverend has had preliminary discussions with three radio station corporations, and he reportedly will follow up with television networks, cable broadcasters, the FCC and large advertisers.  He proposes a 90-day ban on broadcasting artists that use violence in their music for financial gain.  In Sharpton’s words, “The National Action Network has become extremely concerned about the reoccurring violence in the music industry that is being cynically used by some for record and CD sales at the expense of romanticizing violence to young Americans.  Though we clearly support anyone’s first amendment right to say and perform whatever they want, there must be a standard of conduct in their actual actions that is conducive to what is regarded as professional behavior in any industry.”

It’s official.  BBC‘s first layoff round included over 1700 personnel with the final layoff total projected to be 5000 jobs.  With this first move, BBC will save $639 million.  The network hopes to bank $250 million annually with the cuts by the 2007-2008 season in order to put the savings towards new programming.  Half of the 1700 jobs were in the professional services unit.
