Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 10, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Upfront: NICKELODEON
Nickelodeon held its 2006-07 ad sales upfront presentation in New York City yesterday, and unveiled its plans to create and develop programming across all of its linear and non-linear platforms (e.g. TV, movies, broadband, internet, video games, mobile devices etc.), and then grow the properties to other platforms. The network has earmarked millions of dollars in a development slate to introduce original content specifically for non-linear platforms, including the launch of Inkubators, an animation lab that will be housed at Nick’s Burbank studio. The network also intends to develop short and long form programming with creators around the world.
New TV Series developed from platforms outside of linear TV for the upcoming season:
- Tak and the Power of JuJu (15 x 30 min): The CGI animated series is based on the video game title and characters of the same name from THQ and Nickelodeon; premieres 2007
- Mr. Meaty (13 episodes): Developed from the TurboNick broadband platform, the series follows two teen slackers who work at a fast food restaurant. Premieres 2007
- Downward Doghouse (working title) (20 episodes): An original animated preschool series that introduces the Chinese culture and language through a five-year-old Chinese-American girl named Kai-lan. The show was developed/produced through a partnership between with Wang Films. Premieres on Nick Jr. in 2007
- Nicktoons Network Animation Festival will premiere in August 2006 on Nicktoons Network. The festival is now in its third year.
- Barnyard (13 x 30 min): The CGI animated series is being developed based on the upcoming movie of the same name created by Steve Oedekerk. What goes on in a barnyard when the farmer isn’t looking? Premieres 2007.
- Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! (26 episodes): a preschool series based on the recently launched Wubbcast (5-7 min downloadable video podcasts). Wubbzy is a Bolder Media for Boys and Girls Production in association with IDT/Film Roman, which is slated to debut on Nick Jr. in 2007
New Original TV Series/Specials:
- El Tigre (13 x 30 min): Animated in a Mexican folk art-inspired style, El Tigre follows Manny Rivera who idolizes his father and grandfather, one former a superhero and the latter a villain. Premieres 2007
- Thugaboo (3 specials): from Shawn, Marlon and Kenan Ivory Wayans this series of humorous animated specials revolve around those events special in a kids’ life (first day of school, holidays) through the eyes of nine very different kids growing up in the inner city. Each special concludes with a special music video. The first special premieres in August 2006 on Nickelodeon, then on Nicktoons Network
- In addition to new episodes of 18 Nick and Nick Jr. series, ongoing video podcasts and new video games on nick.com as part of the 2006-7 season the network will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Blues Clues. The celebration begins with the introduction of a new character, Blue’s brother in, Meet Blue’s Baby Brother, an hour-long movie that will air Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 7p.
- The Lil’ JJ Show (working title) (13 x 30 min): a live-action multi-generational comedy starring teenage actor/comedian Lil’ JJ, which revolves around ninth grader who works at his family’s diner, and looks at those huge injustices that befall every teen. Premieres in 2007 on Nickelodeon. Nick Movies is also in development on a feature project for Lil’ JJ (actor/comedian), which is based on the real-life rags-to-riches story he shares with his teacher-turned-manager, Ken Bright.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The Jim Henson Company has optioned SF Said’s Varjak Paw, a fantasy-based novel, which Henson will develop as an animated family feature film. Dave McKean, illustrator of the book and director of Henson’s movie MirrorMask, will direct Varjak Paw. McKean and Said will co-write the screenplay. Under the deal Henson also has the option on The Outlaw Varjak Paw, the recently released second book in the series. Varjak Paw is a story about a Mesopotamian blue kitten who ventures out of his once safe home in an effort to save his family and in the process discovers he is part of a mystical tradition of magical martial arts. Said and McKean will Executive Produce the film. There is no studio is yet attached.
Super RTL has acquired the broadcast rights to Entertainment Rights Plc’s preschool brand Postman Pat for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This deal marks Postman Pat first appearance on German TV. Postman Pat is set to launch on Super RTL’s preschool block, Toggolino during 2006. Super RTL will build awareness of the Postman Pat brand via its website www.Toggolino.de, which counts 15 million page impressions per month.
Disney Channel will offer its That’s So Raven and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody series in English, Spanish, German, French, and Mandarin Chinese and Hindi languages as part of its upcoming re-launch of DisneyChannel.com. The website will also feature select episodes of live-action and animated series, short-form content, music videos and Disney Channel Original Movie bonus materials with video content refreshed weekly. DisneyChannel.com will be available free of charge and on-demand.
Walt Disney Television International’s Disney Channel has signed three new Korean carriage agreements with CableNet’s Hello D, Qrix Communication’s Big Box TV and C&M. Disney’s first launch in the area was in 2002 on SkyLife according to C21.
AtomFilms, a distributor of short-films and animation content, has launched AtomFilms To Go, a new section its website. Consumers will now be able to go to the AtomFilms To Go area and download and playback a range content from AtomFilms library onto their iPods, PSPs and PCs. AtomFilms To Go launches with 10 titles, including Street Pain, a comedy staring Steve Carell, with new titles to be added weekly.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Action Products International, Inc. has extended its license deal with PorchLight Entertainment for Jay Jay the Jet Plane through the end of 2008. Action Products will continue to grow its Jay Jay the Jet Plane Wooden Adventure System as well as introduce additional products such as the new Tarrytown Bead Maze (K2+).
THQ Inc. releases Let’s Ride: Dreamer Inspired by a True Story for the Game Boy Advance this week. The game is published by ValuSoft, a division of THQ, and is part of the Let’s Ride series of horse games for girls (rated E for Everyone).
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Wizard Entertainment Group has named Jim Silver as Publisher and upped Rob Felton to Associate Publisher of its weekly publications and related websites, which include Wizard: The Magazine of Comics, Entertainment, and Pop Culture, ToyFare, InQuest Gamer, Anime Insider and Toy Wishes and Wizarduniverse.com. Silver will oversee all sales activities associated with these titles, the upcoming Toy Wishes Mall Tour, Wizard Conventions and the Wizard World Tour. Silver will continue to serve as Editor-in-Chief of Toy Wishes Magazine and will also continue his role with aNb media as Editor-in-Chief of Royalties and Toys and Family Entertainment. In his new role as associate publisher Felton will leverage Wizard Entertainment and Wizard World Conventions assets to reach Males 16-34, the target audience of for Wizard’s publications, websites and events. Prior to this Felton had been VP/Business Development.
Virgin Entertainment Group, North America has upped Dee Mc Laughlin to Director/Brand Marketing and Wayne Scholes joins the company as Director/Strategic Marketing. Both Mc Laughlin and Scholes will report to Dave Alder, CMO.
- In her new role, Mc Laughlin will be responsible for all of the brands communications offline and online, including the marketing and PR initiatives for the Virgin Megastores and Virgin Entertainment Group. She will also continue to manage the creative and production team and will assume responsibility for Virgin’s product marketing group. Prior to this Mc Laughlin was Sr. Manager/Creative & Content, Virgin.
- Scholes will be responsible for strategic partnerships, regional marketing support, traffic driving initiatives, event management, and the development of new marketing revenue streams. Scholes will manage the field marketing and partnership team.
