The U.S. International Trade Commission barred imports of new models of cellphones containing chips made by Qualcomm that provide high-speed Internet access on mobile phones. The company was found to have infringed on patents held by rival Broadcom. The move represents something of a compromise, as Broadcom had asked for a ban on imports of all devices containing the chips instead of just future models. But the ruling is going to cause nightmares for wireless carriers rushing to roll out new models with touch-screens, built-in media players and other third-generation features to try and compete with the upcoming Apple iPhone going on sale June 29. Ironically the iPhone is unlikely to be effected because it operates on AT&T’s older “Edge” based network.
NBC debuted Live From The Peacock Room, a summer concert series that takes place in the virtual reality site Second Life. The concerts, which kicked off yesterday, will take place on top of the NBCU building and feature artists such as Fuel, Drowning Pool, Stereo Suite, Les Claypool, Novah, Dispatch, Jacob Miller and Michael Penn. VirtualNBC will host archive the shows for non-Second Life residents.
Michael Moore launched a YouTube channel to solicit “healthcare horror stories” leading up to the release of Sicko on June 29. He is planning to share the more compelling videos with Congress to strengthen his case for reform.
Discovery is inviting viewers to go online and vote for their favorite Shark Week programs of the last 20 years. The top six vote-getters will air on Discovery Channel during the 8 pm hour of this year’s Shark Week, running July 29 to August 4.
Lorber Media merged with Hidden Treasures Productions (Secrets of Mary Magdalene) to form Lorber HT Digital. The new company will acquire and distribute “transformationally-themed” programs and films for targeted delivery across all platforms. Richard Lorber will serve as President and CEO.
Wine aficionados have a couple of new resources to turn to on the web. TheWineryChannel.tv launched the first all-video website devoted to wine enthusiasts, with an initial line-up of 12 shows on various topics focusing on the “stories” behind established and up-and-coming vineyards. Snooth is peer review platform that encourages users to rate and catalog wines. It has built a database of over 300,000 labels and offers recommendations and ratings from users and professional critics.
Video sharing site Break.com launched a new video player with more TV-like features. Videos can be paused, played in slow motion or skipped using the “reel” feature. Brightness, contrast, saturation and smoothing can also be adjusted, and the screen can be resized with a drag of the mouse, without interrupting the video.
Azooca launched a new Video Mail application that allows users to send and receive video emails through its free web-based service. The video, which can be sent directly from a webcam, is received and stored on Azooca’s servers instead of the user’s desktops. Each video message is limited to 1 minute in length or 10 MB in size, and each user’s mailbox can store up to 250 MB of messages.
The FCC issued its first two fines for illegally shipping TV sets within the U.S. without digital tuners, reports Broadcasting and Cable. The commission fined Syntax-Brillian and Regent USA nearly $3 million total for not meeting the March 1 deadline. The FCC is also clamping down on retailers, issuing a May 25 deadline instructing stores to warn shoppers which TV sets will not work after the digital deadline.
The FCC also wants cable and satellite customers to have the choice to rent or own their converter boxes, with the ability to choose which bells and whistles they prefer. Beginning July 1, operators must supply only set tops that take “cable cards,” designed to guarantee interoperability. The initial TV cable card experiment, which was supposed to replace the set top with cards that slide directly into the TV set, has failed thus far; only 250,000 homes have them deployed, according to The Wall Street Journal. The move could finally open the door for third party competitors such as Tivo and Digeo (which is planning to sell its boxes in retail outlets later this year,) in what has long been a two-horse race.
Sprint unveiled a new mobile search service called Slifter that helps shoppers locate products and services in their local areas. It also provides price and availability information and directions to the stores. GPSShopper is providing the GPS-based technology, which replaces a zip-code based service, found to be difficult to use when users are in an unfamiliar area.
The NAB unveiled two prototype digital converter boxes that will be required to convert analog signals to digital ones after the February 17, 2009 deadline. One is made by South Korea’s LG and the other by Thomson under the RCA brand. Consumers can apply for up to two $40 coupons each to help defer their cost at the FCC’s DTV.gov or NAB’s DTVAnswers.com websites. The boxes, expected to retail for $50-$70, should go on sale starting in January.
Coca Cola unveiled Sprite Yard, a mobile-based social network that invites users to create personal profiles and avatars, share content and communicate with friends. The mobile Sprite Yard site will contain downloadable content such as ringtones and original animated mobisodes produced by Coke. The service launched in China on June 1 and is scheduled to rollout in the U.S. on June 22. WAP-enabled phones can text the word “YARD” to 59666 for an invitation to register.
The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD) and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) filed an amendment with the FTC calling for restrictions on data use and collection before approving the Google/DoubleClick merger. The groups are also asking that Google gives users the right to learn what data is being collected so that they have the option to delete that information.
People in cities with lower broadband penetration tend to watch more TV than people in cities with higher penetration rates, according to an eMarketer analysis of The Media Audit‘s National 2006 report on local media markets. However, adults in the five cities with lower broadband penetration rates actually consumed more total media per day (603 minutes) than the five cities with the highest penetration rates (586 minutes).
Former VP/Programming and Executive Producer for CBS Sportline.com Joe Ferreira was named SVP/GM of the CBS Audience Network. He will coordinate among various CBS properties to oversee programming and syndication decisions and manage the relationships with the 24 online partners that have signed with the network so far. Heather Moosnick was also named VP/Business Development, working to identify and sign additional partners. Both report to Steve Snyder, Chief Operating Officer, CBS Interactive.
VOOM and Altitude Films launched a new site called ueverest.com, following the progression of a team of climbers as they ascend and descend Mt. Everest, retracing the last steps of George Mallory. In June 1924, Mallory and climbing partner Sandy Irvine were spotted just a few hundred yards short of the summit before a snowstorm closed in, and they were never seen alive again. The site is part of a project named Altitude Everest Expedition 2007 that will be featured on AOL‘s recently-launched documentary hub, True Stories via the posting of exclusive videos, photos and text-based content.
