On the heels of FOX alternative programming head Mike Darnell‘s exit in May, the network is reportedly appointing one of its own to oversee singing competition series American Idol and The X Factor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Hill, Senior Executive Vice President at News Corp. and a longtime executive at FOX, will take on the traditional network-producer relationship on the two shows. In the interim, the search continues for a replacement for Darnell to run FOX’s reality programming overall.
HBO has canceled another series. Eastbound & Down‘s upcoming fourth season will be its last. The comedy’s eight-episode final season debuts Sunday, September 29 at 10p.
Popular mother-daughter duo Joan Rivers and Melissa Rivers trade lives with Bristol Palin and Willow Palin, daughters of former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin, in the premiere of ABC‘s Celebrity Wife Swap on Sunday, June 23 at 8p. The reality series will also feature the girlfriend and wife of former WWE wrestlers The Nature Boy, Ric Flair and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, on Sunday, June 30, while actress Nia Peeples trades lives with singer Tiffany on Sunday, July 7. Three additional episodes of the series will air this summer with subjects to be announced.

FX won’t be bringing back Brand X, the late-night talk show starring Russell Brand. However, the relationship between the network and the actor/comedian will continue. FX is developing a scripted, live-action comedy for Brand that is loosely based on his life.
ReelzChannel is adding The Big Picture to its late night lineup. The weekly talk show will offer an irreverent and comedic look at the world of TV and film. Lauren Sanchez and Alex Cambert will star as co-hosts. The weekly show is being produced by Reelz’ in-house studio and is set to debut later this month.
The annual IRTS breakfast took place yesterday in New York, and there were media buyers galore some of whom dropped a tidbit or two about how the buying season is looking. “The pace is similar to last year, said Chris Geraci of OMD, whose clients include Pepsi. It’s what we expected. TV vendors are going to have to make a choice: of price versus volume.” “The digital conversation is definitely bigger than it’s been in the past, and it’s a longer marketplace,” added Maureen Bosetti of Optimedia, whose clients include L’Oreal, DQ, and Whirlpool.
Style‘s popular series Tia & Tamera and Guiliana & Bill return with all-new seasons this summer. Beginning Sunday, July 14 at 8p, season three of Tia & Tamera, produced by Good Clean Fun, follows the twin sisters as they redefine their roles and tackle new ventures, from business opportunities to a baby in the family. On Tuesday, July 16 at 8p, Giuliana & Bill, produced by Wilshire Studios, explores how the celebrity couple is adapting to parenthood.
The Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings, a band of hardcore hunters and trappers native to West Virginia, set out to identify and snare supernatural beasts in Destination America‘s new series Mountain Monsters. The show’s six-episode first season premieres Saturday, June 22 at 10p.
Investigative journalists Mariana van Zeller and Darren Foster infiltrate the nation’s most controversial subcultures in the new National Geographic Channel series Inside: Secret America. Using advanced surveillance techniques and hidden camera technology, van Zeller and Foster go undercover to expose the dangerous worlds of unlicensed guns, synthetic drugs, sex slavery and more. The series premieres Wednesday, July 10 at 10p.
REELZ will be the exclusive broadcast home of the 3rd Annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards special premiering Sunday, June 16 at 1a. Sam Rubin and Jessica Holmes will host the festivities.
Sundance Channel has greenlit the series Dream School from executive producers Jamie Oliver and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. Based on the UK show of the same name, the six-part, hour-long series will give high school dropouts a chance to attend a school comprised of a staff of professional musicians, politicians, filmmakers, actors and artists. The show is set to premiere this fall.
FXX has ordered its first original series, Chozen, an animated comedy from the creative teams behind Eastbound & Down and Archer. The show focuses on a gay white rapper fresh out of prison with a new message and skills. The character of Chozen will be voiced by Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live), while the rapping/performance portion of the character will be voiced by Writer/EP Grant Dekernion. The show is produced by FX Productions.
Bunim/Murray Productions, a Banijay Group company, has optioned and will develop Israeli scripted format, Screenz, in the U.S. through its first-look deal with The Operating Room, a production company focused on bringing Israeli content to the U.S. Two seasons of Screenz, including more than 100 episodes, aired on HOT, one of Israel’s largest satellite channels. Screenz follows a group of people through their everyday web and social network interactions, exposing both their best intentions and worst secrets.
Syfy series Warehouse 13 begins production on its fifth and final season on June 24 in Toronto. The six all-new episodes will premiere in 2014. “Warehouse 13 has been my dream job these past four years,” said showrunner and executive producer Jack Kenny. “These last six episodes will be a gift to our amazingly loyal fans. I’m thrilled that we can build the climax of our Warehouse tale to a satisfying conclusion.”
Edie Falco and company will be back for more emergency room hijinks. Showtime has renewed Nurse Jackie for a sixth season to premiere in 2014. Production begins this fall in New York.
Brigid Brannagh and Reiko Aylesworth have signed on as guest stars for season five of Lifetime‘s Drop Dead Diva, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In addition, Josh Stamberg, who played law firm boss Jay Parker, has exited the series.
Rive Gauche Television has sold THE Company‘s Race to the Scene to Viasat Broadcasting in multiple territories. Viasat in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and The Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Bulgaria are among the territories that have embraced the series. Debuting this week on the ReelzChannel in the United States, Race to the Scene transports movie lovers off the couch and into their favorite movie scenes.
CBS Studios International has announced additional agreements for broadcast rights of Under the Dome. The U.S. drama, produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, will be licensed in 200 international markets, with some starting to run the series this summer. International broadcast networks that have licensed the show include Channel 5/UK, ProSiebenSat1-Group/Germany, M6/France, RAIDUE/Italy, Network Ten/Australia and Global Television/Canada.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX came out on top Wednesday night delivering a 2.4/8 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s Master Chef ranked #1 at 2.1/7, followed by Univision’s Porque el Amor Manda at 1.6/5. FOX’s Master Chef remained in the top spot at 9p at 2.6/8. Univision’s Amores Verdaderos was second at 1.9/6. At 10p, CBS’ CSI and Univision’s Que Bonito Amor tied for #1 at 1.3/4. Telemundo’s El Senor de los Cielos followed at 1.2/3.

Ray Hopkins has been named President of Television Networks Distribution, CBS Corporation. In this newly created role, Hopkins will work closely with new Chief Operating Officer Joseph Ianniello to secure new retransmission and affiliation agreements for CBS’ broadcast and cable networks, including the CBS Television Network, Showtime Networks, CBS Sports Network, Smithsonian Networks and TVGN. Hopkins previously served as the Chief Operating Officer of YES Network.
Jackson Huynh has been appointed Chief Operations Officer of interactive TV and smart TV application publisher Flingo. Huynh, formerly global head of AdMob ad operations for Google, will be tasked with the ongoing development and global expansion of the company’s interactive TV software platform, Samba.
FX Networks executives Nick Grad, Eric Schrier and Chuck Saftler have each been promoted to the position of President as the company embarks on its planned expansion this fall. Grad and Schrier will both hold the title of President, Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. They will oversee all original programming for FX, FXX and FXM, and head business and entertainment operations for FX Productions.Saftler will serve as President of Program Strategy and Chief Operating Officer of FX Networks and will oversee programming strategies, including scheduling and acquisitions, program operations, business operations, and digital operations for FX, FXX, FXM, and the new video-on-demand app FXNOW.
FreeMantleMedia North America has appointed two executives to its scripted development department. Craig Cegielski has been tapped to the newly created position of Executive Vice President, Scripted Programming and Development. Cegielski joins FremantleMedia from Open Circle Entertainment, which he co-founded. Stefanie Berk has joined as Senior Vice President, Scripted Programming and Development. Cegielski was previously president of Graham King’s GK-tv, a division of GK Films.
Rachel Brill has been promoted to Vice President of Unscripted Programming for TNT Originals. Brill, who most recently served as director of unscripted development for TNT, will supervise development of unscripted series, collaborate with directors and producers on developing new ideas, provide creative oversight of unscripted pilots from pre-production through production and post-production, and supervise the continued development of series once they’ve been greenlit.
PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York CW affiliate, has named Sharon van Zwieten as Senior Executive Producer for PIX11 News. In this newly created position, van Zwieten will oversee content for all PIX11 newscasts, on all platforms. She joins the station on June 10.
Television producer and consultant Jim McKairnes has been named the Verizon Chair in Global Broadband and Telecommunications at Temple University’s School of Media and Communication. McKairnes is a 23-year veteran of the television industry, including 15 years at CBS.
DuArt, New York City’s comprehensive video, digital media, and film post facility, has added Craig Gordon as Senior Editor. Gordon, formerly HD Specialist/Editor for Brass Monkey Post, will be available to all of DuArt’s clients, from non-fiction television to independent documentaries and more.
Minneapolis-based creative agency mono has announced three new hires as Creatives. Meg Farquhar, formerly of Ogilvy & Mather in Brazil and Singapore, Joanne Torres, formerly of agency Eleven in San Francisco, and Jeremy Claud, formerly of AKQA, San Francisco, join the team in leading the development of innovative and breakthrough work.
