Rue McClanahan, 76, best known for playing the flirty and vivacious Blanche Devereaux on the classic TV series The Golden Girls, died yesterday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital of a stroke. Previously, Rue went through breast cancer treatment in 1997 and had heart bypass surgery in 2009. Rue was part of the hit ensemble cast of The Golden Girls, along with Bea Arthur, Betty White and Estelle Getty which aired on NBC from 1985-1992. Rue received Emmy nominations four times for The Golden Girls, winning once in 1987. She also earned three Golden Globe nominations for her role as Blanche. Additionally, Rue appeared as the character Blanche in three other series: one episode each of Nurses and Empty Nest and as a regular on The Golden Palace with Getty and White. One of Rue’s first TV roles was All in the Family where she played Vivian Cavender Harmon, the dotty neighbor of Maude’s (Arthur) and she continued playing this character in the spin-off series Maude from 1973-1978. After that she was on the short-lived series Apple Pie followed by a more successful stint on Mama’s Family from 1983-1985. Simultaneously while acting on The Golden Girls, Rue appeared on stage in Los Angeles in the plays Picnic and In the Sweet Bye and Bye which echoed her early career on stage in Pennsylvania and New York. Her career also included several made-for-TV movies and stints on the soap operas Another World and The People Next Door. In 2009, Rue received a lifetime achievement honor during the presentation Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. In more recent years, Rue toured in a one-woman show inspired by her autobiography, My First Five Husbands and the Ones Who Got Away, published in 2007. In her personal life, she was married and divorced five times and had one son, Mark by her first husband, Tom Bish.

Logo will honor the late Rue McClanahan by airing the 2008 series Sordid Lives: The Series starting this Sunday, per Multichannel News. McClanahan played the series’ matriarch Peggy Ingram head of an outrageous, dysfunctional southern family.
