Stats

It’s official. With Nielsen’s national numbers in, Game 1 of The NBA Finals on ABC delivered a 9.0 rating for the network with 15,171,000 viewers to become the highest-rated and most-viewed Game 1 of The Finals since 2004. Game 1 of this year’s Finals was up 8% among viewers, 6% among households and 5% in rating compared to Game 1 of the 2010 Finals which showcased the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers.

Meanwhile, Nielsen’s measurements made The 2011 UEFA Champions League Final the highest-rated and most watched in U.S. history. FOX Sports’ coverage of the game combined on Fox and Fox Deportes drew a 2.1 household rating and 6 share, drawing an audience of 4.2 million viewers nationally, and easily topping last year’s match by 75% and 91%, respectively. Individually, the FOX over-the-air broadcast finished with a 1.4/4 household rating/share, with an audience of 2.6 million viewers compared to a 1.0 HH rating and 1.6 million viewers a year ago. FOX Deportes scored a 0.7/2 rating in total US homes for this year’s match, with an audience of 1.6 million, up 133% in HH rating (0.3) and up 167 in audience (600,000). That number is good enough to score as the highest-rated Champions League Final ever on Spanish-language television and drew the biggest audience for any event in the history of Spanish-language sports cable networks.

Digital Fields

UFC President Dana White took to Twitter to announce the headlining matchup of UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St- Pierre against Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz for UFC 137 in Las Vegas on Oct. 29.

BYU Guard Jimmer Fredette hit the web yesterday with the launch of Jimmer Fredette: Follow Jimmer, a series of webisodes that are airing on a dedicated YouTube channel as well as syndicated on SI.com. Tupelo-Honey Productions is spearheading the project, which chronicles the 2011 Naismith and John R. Wooden Award winner as he prepares for his transition from college player to the NBA. Following the NBA Draft, THP will produce a long-form documentary for broadcast or theatrical release.

TNT analyst Charles Barkley is launching “Earn Chuck’s Bucks,” a new contest designed to provide a business investment to anyone with Internet access and a good business idea. Starting June 2, fans can visit CharlesBarkley.com to submit business plans for a chance to win a $25,000 cash prize of Barkley’s own money.

UFC has announced that the third installment of the promotion’s “Undisputed” video game series will likely be released in January, with several new features added to the mix. For the first time, players will be able to control both bantamweight and featherweight competitors under the UFC banner, as well as feature a “Pride mode,” allowing players to adopt the rule set of defunct Japanese promotion Pride Fighting Championships.

The Main Event

NBA and Stanley Cup finals are always on deck, but two potential matches pitting the streaking Novak Djokovic against Federer and potentially Nadal at the French Open on NBC beginning today at 11a should be must see TV.

In My Opinion …

Sure you can knock his movies… or his music… or his TV shows, but no one can knock the trailblazing way Shaquille O’Neal could promote and play with his fans. His announcement on Wednesday to retire as a player from the NBA via Twitter was par for the course for the perennial All-Star. Whether it was by constantly connecting with his 3.8 million Twitter followers, landing sly endorsement deals, or promoting his latest project, Shaq’s engagement with fans will leave a legacy that lasts far longer than his feuds on the court. I look forward to following his next venture, be it behind the microphone, as a team owner or wherever (ok, maybe not the movies).
