Good morning. It’s Friday, June 30, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Able to leap mounds of ticket stubs – Warner Bros.Superman Returns swooped up a total box office take of $21 million yesterday on its opening day, a total that includes receipts from Tuesday night previews, making it the 8th biggest Wednesday opening, and the 29 highest grossing movie ever, per BoxOfficeMojo.com.  In the list of biggest Wednesday openers Superman Returns comes in just a bit behind War of the Worlds ($21.3 million/2005). Heading that list is Spider-Man 2 ($40.4 million/2004), tho Superman Returns paced ahead of Batman Begins ($15.1 million) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines ($16.5 million).  Superman Returns opened wide on 8,200+ screens, including 76 Imax screens which alone were responsible for $1.2 million of the opening total.

Funimation Entertainment has completed a distribution deal with Optical Entertainment Network, a provider of IPTV and broadband services, for its Funimation Channel.  The agreement makes the Funimation Channel part of the Fision service, OEN’s line-up of 400 IPTV channels available in the Houston area.  A 24/7 digital channel, the Funimation Channel includes anime programming.  The channel will be added to OEN’s Fision lineup in the fall 2006.  OlympuSAT is the exclusive distributor of the Funimation Channel.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Turner Broadcasting has tapped Premium TV, a UK-based digital rights company, to develop a UK broadband TV service for its channel Cartoon Network.  Under the terms of the two year deal, Premium TV will provide the broadband platform for Super Cartoon Network (SuperCartoonNetwork.co.uk), which is slated to bow 4Q 2006.  Subscribers to the site will be able to watch regularly updated Cartoon Network shows, such as Ben 10 and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, as well as being able to watch archived episodes.

MTV Networks has added more programming content from its array of networks, to Apple’s iTune’s Music Store.  Since MTVN’s shows launched on iTunes earlier this year, Comedy Central’s animated series South Park has sold over a million episodes.  The newest content to be added includes:

  • The N: Beyond the Break, a drama series about the competitive world of surfing
  • Nick at Nite: the animated series Fatherhood-based on Bill Cosby’s book, and hidden camera show Hi-Jinks.
  • MTV: Viva La Bam, the humorous/chaotic life of skateboarding pro and Jackass star, Bam Margera.
  • TV Land: Sit Down Comedy with David Steinberg,
  • Spike TV: Blade: The Series, which is based on The Blade movie series, the 2-hour series premiere will be available on iTunes from July 11.
  • Logo: Noah’s Arc, season one of the network’s original drama/comedy series; reality series U.S. of ANT, featuring comedian ANT; and Wisecrack, a stand-up comedy series.

MTV Networks Latin America has launched Lazona.com, a social networking site for bands and music fans to discover new music, take part in forums, blogs and of course talk with their friends and make news ones.  Lazona.com services Latin America in Spanish.  The site debuted with AdiosGarage.com, sponsored by Motorola and provides unknown bands the chance to showcase their music and make fans across Latin America. Then the fans and friends can vote for them to perform at an MTV Alerta Live event.  Winners will be selected each month to perform at these events in front of a live audience.  Lazona.com was developed by MTVN Latin America in cooperation with US-based Liveworld, Inc.

MARKETING/LICENSING

GameStop Corp. has signed on as a presenting sponsor and the official global videogame retailer for the Boost Mobile Major League Gaming Pro Circuit.  GameStop joins Boost Mobile, the youth centric lifestyle brand, Toyota’s Scion, and Red Bull as major supporters of the League.  As a presenting sponsor, GameStop will be well represented at each of the professional competitions as well as through MLG’s media including TV, mobile, and online.  The Boost Mobile Major League Gaming Pro Circuit Presented by Scion and GameStop is holding pro competitions in seven cities in 2006: Secaucus, Dallas, Anaheim, Chicago, Orlando, NY (Playoffs) and Las Vegas (National Championship).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jennifer Harrington has been appointed as Head of Formats, Granada International.  Working out of the London office, Harrington will head up all international format activity worldwide for the company, responsible for sales of Granada International’s formats and unscripted programs, from both ITV Productions and independent producers.  She will also identify and acquire formats from third parties, particularly focusing on the US market. Harrington will report to Tim Mutimer, Director/Sales, and she will also work in tandem with Director/Acquisitions and Co-productions, Emmanuelle Namiech to secure new formats from indie producers.  Harrington joins Granada from her current post as Sales Director, Fox International TV.

American Greetings Corporation has expanded AG Properties, its new intellectual property and outbound licensing division, with three new hires all of whom will be based in NY.

  • Rick Goralnick has been named Director/Outbound Licensing.  He will be responsible for pitching and making deals as well as exploring new category opportunities for AG Properties.  Goralnick will also manage the day-to-day business with licensees.  He will report to, VP/Outbound Licensing, Betts FitzGerald.  Most recently Goralnick directed outbound and inbound licensing strategies and initiatives for the Binney & Smith’s Crayola brand.  Previously, he worked in licensing at Hasbro and retail marketing at Reebok International.
  • Tony Chien joins the company as Brand Manager.  He will oversee marketing and general management of Strawberry Shortcake, Twisted Whiskers, and other upcoming brands from AG Properties.  Chien will report to VP/Marketing, Michael Dresner.  Most recently Chien served as Manager/Toy and Sporting Goods, Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products, where he managed select product categories for Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • Tina Huang becomes Marketing Specialist and will be responsible for supporting the marketing team in brand planning and marketing for Care Bears, Maryoku Yummy, and others.  Huang recently graduated from NYU’s Stern School of Business.  She will report to Michele Schuessler, Brand Manager.
