Good morning. It’s Friday, June 2, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Sports, entertainment and media company IMG Media has sealed a deal to acquire Tiger Aspect Productions, the UK-based indie production company, and its subsidiaries Tigress (adventure/wildlife producer), TTP (the US-based production company) and Tiger Aspect Pictures.  While the purchase price was not disclosed, it is being estimated in the British press as being between $47-$56 million.  The purchase of Tigre Aspect follows is part of IMG’s broader plan to expand the range of genres and programming it distributes worldwide.  IMG Media’s subsidiaries include TWI, the indie producer/distributor of sports programming, and about two months ago IMG acquired Darlow Smithson Productions.  Tiger Aspect produces some 220 hours of programming each year. Among its notables are the animated preschool series Charlie & Lola, and comedy, drama, entertainment programming including Mr. Bean, Robin Hood, Murphy’s Law and The Catherine Tate Show as well as movies such as Billy Elliot and Perry Go Large.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network Australia has picked up the Pay TV rights with Channel 10 snagging the Free TV rights for the animated series Code Lyoko from Taffy Entertainment, which represents the property for MoonScoop and Mike Young Productions.  Australia’s Magna Pacific has acquired the video rights to the series.  Code Lyoko is now seen in Australia and New Zealand on Cartoon Network.  A MoonScoop production, Code Lyoko is co-produced with France 3 and Canal J.

Universal Pictures will distribute in the US and Canada in 2008 Big Idea’s animated feature, The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything – A VeggieTales Movie, per Variety.  The first of Big Idea’s feature films, Jonah – A VeggieTales Movie was released in 2002, earning $25.6 million.  Big Idea Inc. is a subsidiary of Classic Media LLC.

PBS Kids and Brighter Minds Children’s Publishing have released the first set of four board books in PBS Kids’ first educational interactive book series.  Targeted to kids 5 and under, the new series features original animal characters and stories designed to help preschoolers develop early learning concepts, language building and literacy skills as well as the use of imagination and curiosity.  The first set of books include Moo, Moo! Who Are You?, The Great Cake, Imagination Vacation and Hide and Peek.  The second set of books slated to be published September 2006 include Feeling Happy; Winter Spring Summer Fall, a touch and feel book; I Don’t Want to Go to School!; and Fruit Salad about healthy eating.  Additionally, this fall PBS Kids and Brighter Minds will also introduce two sets of oversized flash cards for preschoolers to supplement the books – The Numbers Touch and Learn Cards and Animal Sight Words Touch and Learn Cards.

MARKETING/LICENSING

AG Properties, American Greetings’ recently launched intellectual property and outbound licensing division, has taken in-house the licensing of its Holly Hobbie Classic and Holly Hobbie and Friends brands.  The Holly Hobbie brands were formerly represented by Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products, which will continue to serve as a marketing partner to promote the brands.  There are 40+ licensing partners for Holly Hobbie and Holly Hobbie & Friends, with initial licensed products to be available at retail beginning this fall.  In March 2006 the first DVDs in a series of Holly Hobbie & Friends was released.  The second DVD title, Holly Hobbie & Friends: Christmas Wishes is slated for this release this fall 2006, with two additional titles scheduled for release in 2007, and four more titles currently in development. 

4Kids Entertainment, Inc. has picked up the exclusive worldwide licensing rights to the new 3D/CG animated television series The Zula Patrol.  Under the deal 4Kids will manage the licensing and promotional efforts for the space adventure series that focuses on basic science and astronomy concepts.  Distributed by American Public Television, The Zula Patrol bowed on Public Broadcasting Station affiliates in fall 2005.  MarVista Entertainment is handling the international TV sales for the series.

Correction: It was indeed Natasha Fishman who was appointed VP/Retail Development, Hit Entertainment. It seems that Fishman prefers her real name to the one I misspelled here yesterday, and who can blame her?

RATINGS

Nickelodeon had its best May ratings average among K2-11 since 2002, earning a 3.8 K2-11 and delivering 1.2 million viewers in the demo.  Those numbers are up from May 2005 by 7% and 8% respectively.

Nick.com had its second most visited month since it launched, with 14.5 million monthly unique visitors during May 2006, up +86% over May 2005, and up 9% over April ’06.  TurboNick, the network’s broadband video service, was also up in April by 23% over the previous month, playing more than 21 million video streams.  The top stream for the month was vignettes for The Fairly Odd Parents’ special Fairy Idol, streamed about 2 million times.
