Yesterday, News Corp. under the helm of Rupert Murdoch, announced plans to split the company into two distinct publicly-traded companies. One company would house News Corp.’s media and entertainment assets while the other company would include its publishing and digital education group. Both companies will continue under the control of Murdoch who will serve as Chairman of each entity as well as CEO of the media and entertainment company while Chase Carey will serve as President/COO of the media and entertainment unit. As of yet no CEO has been assigned for the publishing company.
In a tearful good-bye to viewers yesterday morning, NBC News’ Today co-host Ann Curry said she will be assuming a new role as NBC News National and International Correspondent/Anchor and Today Anchor at Large. Curry’s new expanded role is effective immediately and includes a long-term agreement with NBC News. The scope of Curry’s new role will have her report for all platforms of NBC News including its franchises Today, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Rock Center with Brian Williams, Dateline, MSNBC, as well as having a major presence across all digital properties. In addition, NBC News is creating a new multi-person unit designed to cultivate and produce Curry’s stories which will work closely with all of the NBC News division’s franchises. She will further serve as anchor for multiple NBC News primetime specials. Curry has been a part of Today for 15 plus years and was co-anchor of the daily broadcast from June 2011 to June 2012.
The CW has set its fall premiere dates for new and returning primetime series beginning in early October.

New series, Pablo Escobar, el Patron del Mal (Pablo Escobar, The Drug Lord) examines the life story of Colombian drug lord, Pablo Excobar and will debut on Telemundo July 9 at 10p. The Spanish-language series, as told from the perspective of victims, will relate Escobar’s humble origins and early delinquent days to his global recognition as one of the most hunted men in history. Juana Urible and Camilo Cano, whose families were both affected by Escobar’s control, created the series which is based on the book La Parabola de Pablo. Juan Camilo Ferrand wrote the adaptation that was shot in hi-def in more than 450 locations in Medellin, Bogota and Miami. Andres Parra heads the cast playing Escobar and Angie Cepeda as his mistress Regina Parejo.
NBC Sports Group revealed its roster of talent heading NBCUniversal’s coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games that will total 5,535 hours. Bob Costas, who is back for his 10th Olympics and his 9th as Primetime Host will lead NBC’s coverage; Al Michaels and Dan Patrick will host NBC’s Olympic Daytime show offering live weekend and weekday coverage from London; while Mary Carillo will host NBC’s late-night coverage. Hosts for NBCU’s other networks include: Michelle Beadle, Liam McHugh and Willie Geist will host for NBC Sports Network; Kelly Tilghman and Rob Simmelkjaer will host for MSNBC; Fred Roggin is host for CNBC with Laila Ali joining him in the studio; Pat O’Brien hosts for Bravo; Ryan Seacrest, John McEnroe, Bela Karolyi and Jimmy Roberts will all serve as Olympic Correspondents; and Guest Commentators include Shaun White and Jimmy Fallon.
First season series Hotel Impossible and Baggage Battles were granted second season renewals by Travel Channel. Baggage Battles will head into production on 14 half-hour episodes and Hotel Impossible will begin production on 13 one-hour episodes, both next month. Travel Channel will also debut a third season of original paranormal investigative series The Dead Files on August 10 at 10p. All three series are produced for Travel Channel: Hotel Impossible from Atlas Media Corp.; Baggage Battles produced by MY Tupelo Entertainment; and The Dead Files is from Painless Entertainment, Inc.
Premium entertainment network, EPIX launches a new monthly comedy showcase, EPIX Comedy Unbound. The monthly programs begin this Saturday with the EPIX Original Comedy Event Jim Norton: Please Be Offended.
Tuesday’s season finale of The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo delivered 2.5 million total viewers and 1.6 million with A18-40, based on Nielsen data. This series is produced by Evolution Media for Bravo.
Actress and comedienne Doris Singleton Isaacs died Tuesday at the age of 92. Ms. Isaacs was best known for her recurring role on the classic TV series I Love Lucy as Lucy’s near-sighted neighbor and sometimes-rival Carolyn Appleby. She appeared in ten episodes of I Love Lucy that ran from 1953 to 1957. Later, Ms. Isaacs made many TV guest appearances on programs such as Adventures of Superman, The Loretta Young Show, The Great Gildersleeve, The Bob Hope Show and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Ms. Isaacs was also a series regular on the short-lived 1960 series Angel and recurred on My Three Sons and was a guest on The Munsters, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Also in the 1960s, she appeared on Lucille Ball’s other television programs The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy. Her TV credits in the 1970s included All in the Family, Marcus Welby, M.D., Phyllis and the daytime drama Days of Our Lives. One of Ms. Isaacs’ final appearances was in a 1982 episode of Dynasty. Ms. Isaacs’ husband, Charles Isaacs, a comedy writer/director/producer preceded her in death in 2002.
Don Grady, whose TV career began as a Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club and later played one of Fred MacMurray’s sons on the classic TV series My Three Sons, died Wednesday. He was 68. Mr. Grady played son Robbie on My Three sons which aired from 1960 to 1972, one of the longest-running and best-loved family sitcoms ever. Mr. Grady also appeared on other TV shows during the same time period including The Rifleman and Wagon Train. Following the end of My Three Sons, Mr. Grady pursued a career as a music composer and songwriter for television, theater and films. He wrote the theme song to Phil Donahue’s talk show and his work was featured in the children’s TV series The Kid-A-Littles and the 1985 film Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Mr. Grady also co-wrote the song “Keep the Dream Alive” which was recorded by Herbie Hancock, Della Reese and others for the Jazz to End Hunger project. He is survived by his wife, Ginny; his mother; two children, Joey and Tessa; and a sister, Marilou Reichel. Another sister, Lani O’Grady, died of a drug overdose in 2001.

Comedy Central yesterday handed series orders to a trio of projects highlighting up-and-coming comedians. Anthony Jeselnik, who has been a part of the network’s roasts of Charlie Sheen and Donald Trump, will host an untitled weekly topical show and will also be an EP along with head writer Tom Johnson. Show-runner Krysia Plonka and Mosaic’s Christie Smith will also be EPs. Amy Schumer will star in a weekly sketch series featuring single-camera vignettes where she’ll play various versions of herself. The sketches will include footage from the comedian’s stand-up set. Schumer will be an EP with Daniel Powell and Levity Entertainment’s Itay Reiss and Derek Van Pelt producing. The third project features comedian Ben Hoffman who will host The Ben Show, a sketch/man on the street series where he will take viewers on a different life journey each week. Hoffman, Mike Gibbons, Reiss, Van Pelt and Judi Brown Marmel are EPs for Levity Entertainment.
Talk show host Wendy Williams is getting into production involving movie and television projects, working with producers Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones. The new projects will be presented under the banner, Wendy Williams Presents. Williams will be a producer on a TV movie for VH1 called Satan Sisters that is based on a novel by former The View host Star Jones set in the gossipy world of daytime TV.
New comedy series Guys With Kids on NBC added Erinn Hayes (Childrens Hospital) as a series regular. Hayes will play Shelia, the controlling and perfectionist ex-wife of Chris (Jesse Bradford) who shares custody of their 9-month old son. Hayes is replacing actress Sara Rue, who played the role in the pilot episode. Rue is moving to ABC’s new comedy series Malibu Country.
HISTORY’s upcoming new scripted series Vikings added more to its cast. The series will star Travis Fimmel (The Beast, Baytown Outlaws) as Ragnar, the first great Viking leader; Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee, Heroes) as Siggy, Earl Haraldson’s beautiful wife; Gustaf Skarsgard (The Way Back) as Floki, a close friend of Ragnar’s who is an eccentric boat-builder; Clive Standen (Camelot, Robin Hood) as Rollo, Ragnar’s cruel cousin; and Katheryn Winnick (Stand Up Guys, Bones) as Lagertha, Ragnar’s first wife who often fights alongside with him. These new cast members join previously announced Gabriel Byrne who will star as Earl Haraldson, the most important local ruler in Ragnar’s district and George Blagden who will portray Athelstan, an Anglo-Saxon monk captured by Ragnar on his first raid on England. The series is created and written by historical writer Michael Hirst (Elizabeth, The Tudors) who will also serve as EP along with Morgan O’Sullivan of World 2000, John Weber of Take 5 Productions, Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, James Flynn and Sheila Hockin. Production of Vikings is taking place at Ashford Studios in Ireland. The series is an international Irish/Canadian co-production between World 2000 and Take 5 Productions. HISTORY will broadcast the series domestically while MGM Television will take Vikings to the global audience as international distributor outside of Ireland and Canada. Furthermore, Vikings is produced in association with Shaw Media and the series will air on History Television in Canada.
truTV’s new series Guinness World Records Gone Wild selected Dan Cortese (MTV Sports, Veronica’s Closet, Surviving Suburbia) as host. Production on the series began yesterday in Santa Monica, CA and it is slated to debut later this year on truTV. High Noon Entertainment is producing.
Casting Call: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, hosted by Meredith Vieira is traveling the country this summer to find contestants for the 11th season of the game show set to premiere September 3. Producers of the show will be in Chicago July 9; Toledo, OH July 11; Norfolk, VA July 13; Houston July 23; Las Vegas July 25; and New Orleans July 27. Nielsen reports global ad spending during first quarter 2012 increased by +3.1% to $128 billion, compared to a +2.1% increase in North America. The largest spikes occurred with advertising in the Middle East and Africa where spending jumped to +23.3%. In Latin America, spending also rose to +9.6%. Ad spending was down in Europe by -1.4% compared to a year ago.
New York-based social TV company, SecondScreen Networks (SSN) is teaming with Webrangers, an Amsterdam-based social TV company. Their partnership, SecondScreen’s first in Europe, will allow TV producers and networks to use synchronized advertising solutions to enhance their websites and second screen offerings. Some of the products offered through their partnership include digital advertising synchronized to TV spots on second screens, TV companion apps and websites.
