CBS asked Regis Philbin to step in as host for the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards airing live this Sunday beginning at 9p. This year’s Daytime Emmys from Las Vegas will honor American Bandstand and Dick Clark and presenters will include Wayne Brady, Rachael Ray, Jeff Foxworthy, Ryan Seacrest, Vanessa Marcil and Alex Trebeck. Ratings for the 2010 FIFA World Cup continue to track at high levels as Nielsen reported TV audiences for USA’s three group stage games were +68% higher, on average, when compared to games in 2006. An average of 11.1 million total viewers watched the English and Spanish-language broadcasts for each of the three USA Group C games whereas the three group stage games in 2006 averaged 6.6 million total viewers. GroupM updated its global advertising spending report, “This Year, Next Year” saying measured media across 70 nations will likely increase by +3.5% in 2010 to $451 billion. The previous projection from six months ago was a +1% bump overall. GroupM’s report also predicts a 4.5% global increase for 2011. Countries in the BRIIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, Indonesia and China) are contributing most to the overall world growth projection in 2010 along with digital advertising spending. The forecast for US ad spending this year is a decrease of -1.3% to $145 billion, down from the $147 billion spent in 2009. Next year, though, ad spending in the US is expected to swing in the positive to $149 billion, equal to a +2.5% increase. DIY Network presents the first-ever Crash Week programming block starting July 5 through July 8, showcasing three different Crash series in primetime with original episodes airing each night back-to-back. The week features season two of House Crashers at 9p with host and licensed contractor Josh Temple as he ambushes shoppers at a home improvement store then follows them home with a team of experts to re-do a whole room. Following at 10p is the series premiere of Bath Crashers with licensed contractor Matt Muenster as he surprises homeowners at a store then follows them home to totally renovate their bathroom. Then at 11p, DIY Network airs Yard Crashers with expert Ahmed Hassan as he waylays shoppers at stores and then transforms their outdoor space. On Monday, MTV brings back a third season of Disaster Date, the network’s hidden-camera series where friends set up blind dates for their friends. In reality the “bad” blind date is an improvisational actor who is given personal information about the dater in order to create a disaster. Cameras capture the horrified friend’s reactions to the nightmare date. Disaster Date opens Monday at 530p and is produced by 495 Productions. Action sports network FUEL TV serves up a twelfth season of Firsthand this Sunday at 8p as the series profiles the top action sports athletes in the world. The 18-episode season highlights musician/pro surfer Donavon Frankenreiter, skateboarder Chris Cole, Supercross champ Ryan Dungey, 2009 X Games Women’s Motocross gold medal winner Ashley Fiolek among many others. Bravo premieres a fourth season of its docu-series Flipping Out from Authentic Entertainment on August 10 at 9p. The series follows over-the-top house flipper Jeff Lewis as he tries to manage the thorny housing market as well as difficult clients and disloyal employees and friends. The third season of Flipping Out averaged 957,000 A18-49 and 1.27 million total viewers, a double-digit increase over season two. The Style Network welcomes back a new season of the series Whose Wedding is it Anyway? featuring wedding planners Donnie Brown, James Tramondo, Ana Cruz and others dealing with not-easy-to-please brides, grooms and mothers of the bride. The series premieres July 10 at 9p. ~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~
Hallmark Channels, comprised of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel which are owned and operated by Crown Media Holdings, Inc. announced Hallmark Movie Channel has added more than 17 million new subscribers over the last year. Per Nielsen, Hallmark Movie Channel now has 35.8 million subscribers as of the end of May. Additionally, Hallmark Channel HD launched on DirecTV this Wednesday in 10 million homes. With this new distribution count, Hallmark Channel HD has penetrated 40% of viewers with HD in six months. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
AMC acquired a drama series titled The Wreck from director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) centered on a Southern college football team coach who just finished a losing season and the college gives the coach one last season to turn things around. AMC will likely add the drama to its development slate. Anonymous Content is producing and Graham Gordy and Michael Fuller are penning the script; Hancock and the production company are executive producers. TLC is working on a spin-off competition elimination series based on its reality series Cake Boss with the goal to find the next aspiring cake maker. The new eight-episode series, starring master baker Buddy Valastro, owner of the Hoboken, NJ-based Carlo’s Bakery and star of Cake Boss, follows 10 up-and-coming bakers as they compete in a series of challenges to see who has the talent to run a business with the winner receiving an apprenticeship at Buddy’s own shop. Casting begins immediately and people who love cake making and have artistry as a cake decorator are encouraged to apply. Information can be found at tlc.com/cakeboss. Production begins on the new series in September with a premiere date set for December. High Noon Entertainment is producing. Cake Boss is presently in its third season, airing on TLC each Monday at 9p. Cynthia Nixon (HBO’s Sex and the City) is joining the cast of Showtime‘s upcoming comedy The Big C opening August 16 for four episodes. Nixon will play Cathy’s (Laura Linney) friend Rebecca. In other Showtime news, the premium network is talking with opinionated sports commentator Stephen A. Smith to possibly have him host a late-night talk show, reports the LA Times. Smith is a regular on ESPN’s NBA Shootaround and has a show on ESPN2 called Quite Frankly in addition to a nationally syndicated radio show. The proposed weekly show would cover spots as well as other topics. Tracey Edmonds and Sheila Duckworth (both executive producers of Soul Food) have signed on as executive producers for this Showtime project though a showrunner has not been selected. Lifetime ordered three pilots, all police procedurals, reports THR. One is from showrunner Josh Berman (CSI, Bones) called Against the Wall about a policewoman who ruffles the feathers of her cop brothers when she joins Internal Affairs. Next is Exit 19 about a single mom who also works as a New York City homicide detective. This project is from ABC Studios and CBS Studios with Jeffrey Bell (V) as showrunner and Nina Wass and Gene Stein as executive producers. The third pilot is an untitled project also from Josh Berman and Sony Pictures Television about two female police detectives located in San Diego as they investigate high-profile crimes while juggling their personal lives. The three projects will be on Lifetime’s schedule next year. ~ RATINGS ~
Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX topped the competition Wednesday night with a 2.5/8 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, dancing beat all as FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance won with a 2.4/8 ahead of next in line UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 2.1/7. Overall talent did best at 9p as NBC’s America’s Got Talent was #1 at 3.5/10 while FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance dropped to second place with 2.7/8. NBC had the final say of the night as its Law & Order: SVU repeat was first with a 1.6/5 over CBS’ encore of CSI: NY at 1.4/4. Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. is giving Jeff Matteson more responsibility within its corporate communications department as SVP/Strategic Communications Officer. Effective immediately, Jeff will oversee the company’s communication team and direct the corporate messaging for the company’s roster of networks and businesses among other duties. Based in Atlanta at TBS, Inc.’s headquarters, Jeff reports to Kelly Regal, EVP. Furthermore, TBS, Inc. appointed Misty Skedgell as SVP/Corporate Communications to be the company’s chief spokesperson and to manage Turner’s Corporate Philanthropy, Corporate Social Responsibility and Presentation services groups. She will report to Jeff Matteson. Marlene Sharp was named to the newly-created role as Director/Development at Rubicon Studios. Marlene is charged with indentifying intellectual properties for the studio to develop across all platforms in addition to finding production and co-production partners for new and existing projects. Most recently, Marlene was Co-CEO/Producer at Two Twiggs & A Berry Productions, LLC. Mike Valdes-Fauli advances to the new position as US Managing Director at The Jeffrey Group, an integrated communications company targeting Latin audiences in the Americas. Mike will additionally join the agency’s Executive Management Committee along with Founder/Chairman Jeffrey Sharlach, President Jorge Ortega and COO Brian Burlingame. Mike will now lead all US staff and client service as well as the teams involved with the company’s Latin America pan-regional accounts based in the US and US Hispanic market clients. Mike joined The Jeffrey Group in 2004 and recently opened the agency’s New York City office and spearheaded the company’s US Hispanic Practice. Univision Communications Inc. hired Peter Walker as President/Univision Local Media. Peter will begin his new role July 12, joining from the Tribune Company. Peter will supervise Univision Local Media, a new division which streamlines all operations and sales for the Spanish-language media company’s local television stations, Univision Radio and local interactive properties into one unit. Peter will be based in New York and will report to Joe Uva, President/CEO, Univision Communications, Inc. Univision Communications, Inc. further announced Joanne Lynch, President/Univision Television Station Group is retiring at the end of August. She has been with Univision for almost 20 years.
