Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 22, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Starcom USA jumps right into the kid’s cable TV ad sales upfront market by inking an agreement with Nickelodeon that is valued at upwards of $100 million.  The deal, the first in the kids TV world, is based on quarter-hour TV program ratings, the pact stretches across the Viacom Kids and Family Group’s multiple platforms and demos.  Additionally, the deal includes plans for Starcom and Nickelodeon to work together on research initiatives focusing on kids and their viewing habits as well as how and where to market to them.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director Michael Apted will helm the third chapter in author C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, per The Hollywood Reporter.  Andrew Admanson, the director of the first two movie adaptations of the book series, will serve as a producer for Dawn Treader.  The second Narnia movie, Prince Caspian is slated to bow May 16, 2008, while Dawn Treader is expected to begin production in early 2008 and is currently slated for a May 1, 2009 release.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel has picked up Aardman Animation’s stop-motion animated series Shaun the Sheep.  The short-form series is scheduled to premiere on Disney Channel Sunday, July 8, in primetime.  Targeted to K5 and up, the series revolves around a young sheep that leads his animal buddies into and around all sorts of misadventures.  The character of Shaun first appeared in director Nick Park’s animated short A Close Shave, for which he won an Oscar.

Nickelodeon will launch Neopetsmini-shows” this Saturday, June 23, 2007.  The interstitial shows will include Neopia specific story information, like characters outsmarting each other, taking chances or setting evil plans in motion.

Target Entertainment‘s signed several new deals, some of which were finalized at Discop this week, including deals for some of its kid-aimed shows.  Pop TV Slovenia has picked up Chapman Entertainment’s Roary the Racing Car, the preschool stop frame and CGI animated series set at Silver Hatch racetrack.  RTV Slovenia has picked up Monster Animation’s 2D animation preschool series Fluffy Gardens. One of the Discop sales was Chapman Entertainment’s Fifi and the Flowertots, which was sold to Viasat Estonia and Latvia and Minimax for Hungary, Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, the Balkans, and Romania.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Mattel has been tapped by Warner Bros. Consumer Products to serve as the global master toy licensee for the feature films Speed Racer and The Dark Knight, which are slated for release on May 9 and July 18, 2008, respectively.  Mattel plans to produce products based on the Speed Racer movie across several of its product lines including Hot Wheels, Tyco (remote control vehicles), and the newly-acquired Radica (games/electronics), as well as a line of games and puzzles.  As for The Dark Knight, Mattel will look to the new Batsuit, a vehicle in the shape of the Batpod and some of the main action scenes for some of its upcoming products including action figures, action play items that incorporate role-playing, as well as games and puzzles.  Speed Racer products will hit stores in late March 2008, while The Dark Knight items will bow in early June 2008.

More news from Neopets, which will launch beta testing Thursday, June 28 for its new virtual NC Mall.  The NC Mall will allow Neopets members to purchase Neocash, a new currency unique to the site, with which they can then buy virtual items for their pets.  The Neopets website will continue to be free of charge.  Initially, Neopets is launching the NC Mall in the US and Canada, with PayPal serving as the payment service during the beta testing.  Additionally, plans for more payment options and an international launch plan will follow soon.

Classic Media swings into deals with Crave Entertainment and Ignition Entertainment to publish video games based on its new animated TV series, George of the Jungle.  The new games will be released this winter, to coincide with the US premiere of the new George of the Jungle on Cartoon Network, and will be available for Nintendo DS, Wii and PlayStation 2 systems.  Crave Entertainment will distribute game titles in the US, while Ignition Entertainment will handle international distribution. George of the Jungle console games will also debut in this winter in the UK, and will then begin rolling out in Europe and other territories from spring 2008.

Namco Bandai Networks Europe Ltd., has teamed with FremantleMedia Enterprises in a multi-year deal to develop, publish and distribute mobile games based on the Idols format.  Under the pact, mobile Idol games will be released across territories in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.  FremantleMedia has sold the Idols format to 41 territories.

STONE SOUP

Opening in New York City this week is Ripley’s Believe It or Not Times Square Odditorium.  Not that NYC needs help in this department, but there you have it – shrunken heads and all, entrance into the Odditorium will cost you, an adult ticket runs about $25 and kids $19.  Or you can just stand in Times Square around lunchtime  for free.  That said, don’t start writing me – I love NYC and live here  and who knows I might be one of those people you see in Times Square.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Peter Wachtel joins Cookie Jar Entertainment as Product Design Director.  Wachtel will develop and implement product plans for the company’s brands and is also responsible for creating new business opportunities for all of the brands.  Working out of the LA offices, Wachtel will report to Kelly Elwood, SVP/Marketing.  Previously, Wachtel has worked in the toy and entertainment industry as a creative director and designer, and has worked for Jakks pacific, FAO Schwarz, Applause and Toy Biz, among others.
