Good morning. It’s Friday, June 21, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

2 Original Six Teams, a 2-2 Series Tie, and yet another overtime game continues to propel the NHL’s momentum in the post-season as NBC drew an average of 6.459 million viewers on Wednesday, making it the most-watched Stanley Cup Final Game 4 of all time, according to Nielsen. Overall, the series between the Bruins and Blackhawks is pulling 5.356 million viewers per game, which also marks the most-watched Final through four games on record (data available since 1994). Game 5 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final goes down on Saturday night at 8p on NBC.

On the Air

Univision Deportes saw coverage of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup matches featuring Brazil/Mexico and Italy/Japan on Wednesday deliver triple digit growth on Univision and UniMas compared to the matches of the 2009 tournament. To date, the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup on Univision Networks is averaging 1.8 million viewers, 1 million Adults 18-49 and 548,000 Adults 18-34, for spikes of 496%, 500% and 495% respectively through six matches.

Speaking of rating spikes, Golf Channel on NBC’s coverage of the U.S. Open and Golf Channel’s news programming hit high marks last week. Coverage on NBC ranked as the most-watched East Coast U.S. Open in six years, according to Nielsen, while Golf Channel posted the network’s most-watched U.S. Open Week ever for an East Coast event and the second most-watched U.S. Open Week of all-time. Golf Channel on NBC’s final round coverage on Sunday delivered 8.4 million average viewers for a 5.4 rating, making it the best East Coast final round at the U.S. Open since 2007 and up 14% over the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club. That averages to 6.8 million average viewers through the weekend.

As we head toward the U.S. Women’s Open in NY, ESPN2 and WatchESPN announced that the outlets will carry four hours of live play in both of the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday, June 27-28 with coverage running from 3-7p. Sean McDonough anchors ESPN’s coverage and will be joined by Judy Rankin and Dottie Pepper.

Spike TV will launch season 9 of Bellator MMA with a three-hour special telecast on Sept. 7 starting at 8p. The night will feature reigning Bellator Middleweight World Champion Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko putting his title on the line against Season 8 Middleweight Tournament Winner Doug Marshall, the live “Fight Master” Tournament Final, and the Bellator MMA return of “The Baddest Man on The Planet” Joe Warren. Preliminary action will be streamed live for free on Spike.com starting at 6p.

Harvard and Yale are bringing their rivalry back to NY where the collegiate rivals will square off at Madison Square Garden The hockey game will take place on January 11, 2014 with the “Rivalry on Ice” carried nationally on NBC Sports Network. This inaugural Rivalry on Ice game is part of a multi-year agreement, in which Leverage Agency will handle full 360 marketing and promotion for the event.

NBC Sports Group and Alli Sports are set to kick off the 2013 Dew Tour with more than 30 hours of coverage of the Dew Tour Beach Championships on NBC, NBC Sports Network,NBC Sports Live Extra and Dew Tour Liveon DewTour.com. The action begins tomorrow at 4p on NBC and will be hosted by Todd Harris. This year’s Dew Tour will debut two new disciplines, BMX Street Session and Skate Street Session, featuring skate and BMX Street competitors hitting a 10-stair rail and hubba set-up on the beach.

X Games Munich 2013 is set to kick off on Thursday, June 27 with 47.5 hours of programming across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ABC, including 26.5 hours on television. Outside the United States, X Games will be seen in more than 182 countries and territories to more than 430 million homes, including telecasts in Africa, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Caribbean, Europe, Israel, Mexico, Middle East, New Zealand and South America.

David Feherty returns on Monday, sitting down with two-time, Masters Champion Ben Crenshaw at 10p on Golf Channel.  The episode will feature the two old friends reminiscing about Crenshaw’s career including Crenshaw’s three NCAA championships, his Ryder Cup win in 1999 where  as USA captain  his famous “I have a good feeling about this” words during a press conference spurred his players to one of the greatest comebacks in golfing history.

Commissioners, CMOs and Sportscasters, oh my! The annual Cynopsis: Sports Business Summit is set to take place on Aug. 14 in NY, and will feature some of the biggest names driving sports today. In addition, we are holding our Women of Action cocktail event celebrating and discussing the impact women are having in the sports industry on Aug. 13.

Sponsorship & Promotion

Procter & Gamble is now taking up skiing and snowboarding, inking a multi-year deal with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association that will extend through the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and the 2015 International Ski Federation Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail/Beaver Creek. As part of the partnership, select P&G brands will be engaged in event activation at Olympic qualifying events, advertising on the USSA’s NBC broadcasts as well as athlete interaction and content development.

Lawyers for former student athletes are now looking to make their lawsuit against the NCAA over compensation into a class action that represents thousands of collegiate players, according to the AP. The NCAA argues that many of the athletes receive scholarships in exchange for playing and that paying student athletes would ruin collegiate sports.

Sunoco inked a deal to serve as presenting sponsor of the IndyCar race at Pocono on July 7, which will now be called the Pocono INDYCAR 400 Fueled by Sunoco, according to NBCSports.com. The 400-mile event at Pocono Raceway will mark the first open-wheel event at the 2.5-mile, triangular-shaped track since 1989.

Digital Fields

At long last, Wimbledon is getting an iPad app. The All England Club announced the app yesterday, which is designed to “give the user a unique view of The Championships through exclusive footage around the grounds, whilst providing all the crucial information to make it an ideal companion to Wimbledon.” Other features will include live scores, draws, schedule and player profiles.

For the first time ever, show jumping fans will be able to watch competition from the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows live via live webcasts from HRTV from June 25-30 and July 2-7 respectively.

Dial Global named Ronald Furman as the company’s Chief Revenue Officer where he will be responsible for the company’s overall revenue generation. Furman joins the company from Insignia Sports/Entertainment, where he served as EVP/Managing Director.
