Cynopsis

6/01/07

Good morning, it’s Friday, June 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

There is movement in the Bancroft camp regarding the bid made for the Dow Jones & Co., which the Bancroft family owns 25%, and controls 64% of its voting power.  The family issued a statement saying they would like to meet with Rupert Murdoch and find out directly from him if News Corp. would be able to “ensure the level of commitment to editorial independence, integrity and journalistic freedom that is the hallmark of Dow Jones.”  News Corp. made an unsolicited bid in April of $5 billion for Dow Jones, which also includes MarketWatch and Factiva. The family initially seemed cold to the News Corp offer, but has now said it would listen and consider the offer, as well as entertain offers from others.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

NBC has a busy June planned as the network has several premieres and a big finale scheduled:

  • America’s Got Talent is back for season two starting June 5 at 9p with Jerry Springer as the new host along with Sharon Osbourne as a new judge who joins David Hasselhoff and Piers Morgan, both returning from season #1.
  • Last Comic Standing will begin season five June 13 at 9p with a two-hour show sporting new host Bill Bellamy and new talent scouts including Alonzo Bodden, ANT and Kathleen Madigan.
  • The season two finale of Deal or No Deal will air June 18 at 8p featuring special guest star Danny Glover.
  • Immediately following the finale of Deal or No Deal, NBC will premiere the new reality dating series Age of Love with host Mark Consuelos at 9p.

USA has picked up the cable TV rights to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End from Buena Vista TV, for a reported license fee of $28 million. This is the third Pirates movie acquired by USA.  The third in this trilogy will begin its five year term on USA in 2009, after its Pay TV run on Starz.  The non-exclusive deal also allows for no more than three single runs to be sold to another cable network or a broadcast network.

When the Travel Channel debuts its investigative paranormal series, Most Haunted Live tonight, the network will broadcast live for seven consecutive hours – a first for the network – from one of the most haunted places in America: The Eastern State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania. The ghostly action will begin at 8p and continue through June 2 at 3a. Besides being on-air, Most Haunted Live will include online components as multiple webcams will stream live images from various areas to give viewers a chance to chart potential supernatural activity and alert the investigators.

After four successful seasons on Sci Fi Channel, Battlestar Galactica from NBC Universal TV Studio will end with 22 new episodes.  The fourth season is scheduled to kick off in November.  An official announcement is expected at a press conference later on today.

Nielsen Media Research launched its commercial ratings service in time to make it part of upfront deals currently being negotiated. Data will be backdated to April 30 covering live, live plus same day and live plus 1, 2, 3, or 7 day viewing for DVR customers, covering broadcast, cable and syndicated programs. Nielsen estimates about 17% of households currently have DVRs. Within these homes, 58% of broadcast primetime viewing still takes place live, with 42% occurring through DVR playback. NBC’s The Office had the highest percentage of viewers watching its commercials when live+3 data was included.

Bravo is gearing up to debut its third night of original programming with a new docu-drama series surrounding the real life of Paula Abdul in Hey Paula on June 28 with two back-to-back half-hour episodes starting at 10p. The seven-episode series will give viewers an intimate look into the pop icon’s life and the people who encompass her world.  And last Wednesday night, Bravo’s finale of Shear Genius at 10p delivered 859,000 A18-49 viewers, 816,000 A25-54 viewers and 1.3 million total viewers.

Northstar Media and Nelligan Sports Marketing are partnering to syndicate two sports specials:

  • The 2007 College Football Preview Show – a one-hour preview of the next college football season, using The Sporting News as an exclusive content provider. This special has cleared in more than 60% of the U.S. on stations from the ABC, NBC, CBS O&O groups, as well as Hearst Argyle, Meredith, Scripps Howard, Fisher and Media General.
  • The 2007 College Basketball Preview Show – a one-hour barter-only program which will highlight the upcoming college basketball season with content provided by The Sporting News. This show is currently cleared in more than 35% of the U.S. on stations from the ABC, NBC, CBS O&O groups, in addition to Hearst Argyle, Meredith, Scripps Howard, Fisher and Media General.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The newest cast member to the long-lived NBC series Law & Order will be Jeremy Sisto, stepping in as Detective with partner Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin), and replacing Milena Govich. No news yet who will replace Fred Thompson as District Attorney.

The CW has ordered 13 episodes of Eight Days a Week, a midseason replacement series starring Mario Lopez and Christina Milian.  The project comes from CBS Paramount Television Network and Warner Bros. TV, produced by Hazy Mills.

Joining the cast of Heroes next season will be Dania Ramirez as Maya, a new hero.  What her hero superpowers will be has not been revealed.

Casting Call: NBC and Telemundo are jointly holding an open casting call for English, Spanish and bilingual-speaking actors, as both network’s wish to add diverse, new faces to their talent pool. The audition will happen June 8 at 10a at the Sawgrass Mill Mall (The Oasis) in Sunrise, FL. Interested actors can visit www.diversecitynbc.com for more details.
