CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

06/18/04

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 18, 2004, and now on with your first early morning briefing.

What would a day be without starting with the most receipt update of the Nielsen Media Reserach Local People Meter situation?  Nielsen issued a statement responding to the release of MRC and Ernst & Young data to the press, data that was written up in yesterday’s Los Angeles Times.  Choosing to publicly address each point, the Nielsen statement read in part in response to Major Issues Raised by the MRC Audit as follows:

  • The MRC found a discrepancy on race in two of the 30 audited homes (of which twelve were identified as African American). In both cases, this was due to differences in the way different people in the household reported their race. Racial identification is a complex issue for many American families, particularly mix-ed race households, and we are working with the MRC on an alternative method to ask this question in mixed race households.  We have also double-checked all mixed race households in the sample to ensure they are properly identified.
  • In two of the 27 Latino households that were audited, the audit found a difference in the household language of the residents. In one case, Nielsen’s interviewer mistook a Brazilian household for Argentinean- an error that we will correct through intensified training of field staff. In the other household, a change in answer by the owner/renter failed to be recorded by Nielsen’s representative.
  • The audit found that fault rates — the percentage of homes with communications errors, unplugged meters or improper usage of the meter — rose in some areas.  At one point, the fault rate for African American households temporarily reached 25%, compared to an overall average of 16%. Some of this may have been due to the active campaign against Nielsen in communities of color. We have added nine field representatives to the New York market to stabilize the fault rates at ordinary levels.  Since late May, fault rates are have been well within target levels and over the past seven days (June 10-16) fault rates for African Americans have averaged 18%.

Nielsen also points out that the MRC did not say the Nielsen methodology undercount persons of color; it did not say there were any flaws in the technology itself; and the audit did not say anything about delaying the rollout of the Local People Meters. Nielsen has also asked the MRC to reconvene in mid-August for another accreditation review of Nielsen’s LPMs.

An evening of premieres on Fox led to an overall win for the night with a 4.0/13 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research.  Fox won each half hour between 8p and 930p in the A18-49 demo:  Simple Life 2 (premiere) 3.9/15, Quintuplets (premiere) 3.5/12, Simple Life 2 at 9pm 4.8/15, and Method & Red premiered at 930p and earned a 3.8/11, second only to NBC’s last half hour of NBC’s Last Comic Standing (4.7/14).   For its full hour, Last comic Standing delivered a 4.2/13.  In other demo categories, Fox earned a 4.5/14 W18-49, 5.3/17 W18-34, 3.5/12 M18-49 and a 3.5/15 M18-34, winning each of those demos.

FX has ordered up a new original drama series starring Andre Braugher called Thief (Pariah/Regency/Fox TV), according to Hollywood Reporter.  Braugher is the thief, as well as a father, and a guy being hunted by the good guys and some of the bad guys as well. Production will begin soon in New Orleans.

The Simpsons sisters are doin’ just fine — Newlywed Jessica had her series season premiere on MTV Wednesday night and drew in a reported 3.1 million viewers. Meanwhile younger sister Ashlee had her series debut immediately following, and held onto 2.6 million of those viewers.  Not a bad start.

ESPN has signed with the U.S. Golf Assoc for an additional four year deal that covers the three Opens – US Open, US Women’s Open and the US Senior Open, through 2008.

Pirates of the Caribbean made its pay tv debut on Starz! Saturday evening at 9pm and delivered an 8.1/14 HH Rtg, which in the Starz universe translates to about 1.5 million HHs.  For all three airings over the course of the weekend (two additional plays on Sunday), the pay tv net totaled at 16 HH Rtg pts.  Compared to some other pay tv premieres, Pirates took the lion’s share of the booty — for instances, Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines debuted on HBO to 2.0 million households; and Head of State on Cinemas has 293,000 HHs, according to info provided by Starz!.

Well, that didn’t take long — the most recent The Bachelor NY Giant Quarterback Jesse Palmer, and his #1 choice Jessica, have called it quits. Interesting that none of the Bachelors have stayed together with the women they’ve chosen; but thus far both Bachelorettes have – one is married (Trista & Ryan) and the other is engaged (Meredith & Ian).

Debi Naanes has been upped to VP/Seattle Sales Manager at HRP, station rep firm.  Debi was promoted from an Account Executive, a position she’s held in the Seattle office for the past four years.

Hobson has been upped to Sr. EVP/Chief Strategic Officer.  He will be principally responsible for leading the Company’s long-term strategic direction and planning efforts across its four business units: Television, Radio, Music and Internet.  He will continue to supervise business development for the Company, including identifying and facilitating acquisition opportunities, business and technology investments, and other growth initiatives in order to further enhance shareholder value.

Phase Two Television has named development exec Paul Shapiro as EVP/Development. The announcement was made by Sandy Grushow, President of the production pod based at Twentieth Century Fox Television.   Paul will work with Sandy in developing scripted/non-scripted series for all networks, identify talent, work with writers, and pitch shows to executives, and will ultimately share creative oversight of series and pilots developed under the Phase Two Productions banner.

If you’re looking for me today and this weekend, I’ll be on the couch, eating bon bons, occasionally jumping up to putt a golfball across the living room floor, and thoroughly enjoying the US Open.  I’ll be rooting for Tiger, whom I have had a golf crush on since he went pro. Or Freddie Couples to win.  Either way, I’d be happy.
