Good morning. It’s Friday, June 15, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports Media Group opened the books to its upcoming 2012 college football slate, with more than 165 games set to air nationally across FOX, FX, FOX Sports Networks (FSN), Big Ten Network (BTN) and FOX College Sports. The action kicks off on Sept. 1 with the debut of FOX Sports’ first-ever regular-season over-the-air college football package, which includes 12 prime time games and seven double headers. The schedule wraps up with coverage of the Pac-12 Football Championship Game, Big Ten Football Championship Game and AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. Fox’s debut game on Sept. 1 will feature USC hosting Hawaii.

The Pac-12 Networks formally announced its scheduling plans for its initial college football season, with 15 games on deck during the first three weeks. The schedule, with the addition of the California/USC game in week 4, will include at least one game from each Pac-12 team during the first four weeks. The Pac-12 Networks will kick-off its 35-game football schedule with six games during the opening week, spanning August 30-September 1, including two on Thursday, Aug. 30 with Northern Colorado/Utah and Northern Arizona/Arizona St. Overall, Arizona, Cal, Oregon and Stanford each have two appearances during the first three weeks, while ASU, Colorado, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah, Washington and Washington State have one.
Meanwhile, ESPN, which is hitting the first year of a new 12-year agreement with the conference, has selected 12 Pac-12 college football games to add to its telecasts across ESPN, ABC, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Both USC and Oregon will have multiple games featured including USC/Utah on Oct. 4 and against Norte Dame on Nov. 24. Oregon gets the spotlight against Arkansas State on Sept. 1, against Arizona on Sept. 22 and at Arizona State on Oct. 18. The schedule will include six weeknight Pac-12 games.
The Dream Team delivers again. NBA TV’s premiere of the documentary The Dream Team presented by Right Guard averaged 847,000 total viewers, per Nielsen,to become the network’s most-viewed telecast of all-time. The program celebrated the 20th anniversary of USA Basketball’s Gold Medal team with never-before-seen footage and interviews with all 12 members including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley. Telemundo’s coverage of the Soccer World Cup Qualifier between El Salvador and Mexico on Tuesday delivered 3.8 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, marking the highest-rated sports event in Telemundo since 2009. Overall, the game drew over 2.2 million adults 18-49, almost 1.2 million adults 18-34 and 1.4 million male 18-49 viewers; reaching a cumulative audience of more than 6.9 million (persons 2+).
NBC Sports Group revealed the schedule for this year’s Summer at Saratoga series, with five live broadcasts from Saratoga Race Course, beginning Saturday, August 11 at 6p on NBC sports Network with the Fourstardave Handicap. Other broadcasts include Aug. 12, Aug. 18, Aug. 25 on NBC and Sept. 1 on NBC.
FOX Sports is offering up five games for this week’s Baseball Night in America tomorrow at 7p. Coverage will be anchored in 29% of the country by the Red Sox/Cubs with Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Ken Rosenthal handling the microphone. Other matchups include Reds/Mets in 21% of the nation, Orioles/Braves in 17%, Astros/Rangers in 14% and Marlins/Rays in 8%.
CBS Sports Network announced that the channel will offer coverage of the 2012 NBA Draft with a slate of four one-hour shows, beginning Wednesday, June 20 at 8p. Inside College Basketball: Draft Special will be hosted by Adam Zucker with analysts Wally Szczerbiak, Steve Lappas, Seth Davis and Mateen Cleaves.
FUEL TV’s telecast of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship on Saturday scored as the network’s second most-watched program ever, according to Nielsen. The race drew 214,000 viewers with 105,000 among M18-49. Viewership totals run second only to UFC Fight Night on FUEL TV from February 15 this year. Through May, prime time viewership on the network is up 218%, while Total Day viewership is up 125% compared to 2011.
ESPN is swapping games for its UEFA EURO 2012 plans. The company announced that Czech Republic/Poland will now run on ESPN while Greece/Russia will hit ESPN2. Through eight matches, ESPN’s English-language presentation of the event is averaging 978,000 households and 1.260,000 viewers — up 172% and 183% respectively. Top 10 metered markets through the first 10 matches include: New York (1.9), Miami-Ft. Lauderdale (1.8), Los Angeles (1.3), Providence (1.3), Jacksonville (1.3), Washington, DC (1.2), Richmond, VA (1.2), Atlanta (1.2), Greensboro-High Point, NC (1.2) and Austin, TX (1.1).
ESPN and DIRECTV announced the first-ever 3D transmission of the Olympic Games in Latin America, with broadcasts of five London 2012 events. The broadcasts will be offered on the ESPN3D network exclusively to subscribers of DIRECTV in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela with events set to include the Opening Ceremonies, Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, Track and Field Finals, Men’s Basketball Finals and the Closing Ceremonies.
Former Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand will be honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at The 2012 ESPYS presented by Capital One on July 11. LeGrand suffered a spinal cord injury while playing a game that ended his playing career. After being told he would be a quadriplegic and would have to remain on a ventilator, LeGrand worked hard and steadily improved over the following weeks. He began breathing on his own and later even began standing upright with the aid of a metal frame.
MSG+ will run the first of its Summer Ice packages on Saturday at 8p, with four consecutive weeks of the best of the New York Islanders from the 2011-12 season. Each two-hour installment will be hosted by MSG’s Butch Goring, Peter Ruttgaizer and Bill Pidto. Later this summer in July and August, MSG+ will present two four-week blocks of Rangers and Devils Summer Ice lineups as well.

The NBA’s Spidey-sense is tingling. The league is partnering with Sony Pictures during this year’s NBA Finals to promote The Amazing Spiderman. The NBA Finals on ABC features a spot combining NBA game action between the Thunder and Heat with action from the movie.
The AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl announced a licensing agreement with The Collegiate Licensing Company to manage its trademark licensing program. Prior to joining CLC, the Bowl’s trademark licensing program was managed internally. This year’s game will be played at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La., on Dec. 28.
Stony Brook University continues to beef up its profile, and will launch a commercial that will air during the team’s first-round game of the CWS today against UCLA, according to the AP. The school is spending $100,000 to produce and air the commercial.
