Upfront Update: As of yesterday, all remaining broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC have now completed their upfront deals.

  • According to reports, ABC averaged +11% to +12% price increases totaling $2.3 billion to $2.4 billion in ad sales.  ABC was the third broadcast network to finish its upfront.
  • Further reports say CBS finished its upfront apparently totaling $2.6 billion to $2.7 billion in upfront sales.  CBS’ ad price bumps came in at the +13% to +15% range, ending with a higher increase than the other broadcast networks.  CBS also sold around $100 million to $150 million more in inventory this year compared to 2010.
  • NBC pulled in CPM price increases in the +9% range, up from about 7% last year, for a total of approximately $1.7 billion.  NBC totaled about $1.6 billion in 2010.
  • Overall, the five broadcast networks tallied between $8.8 billion and $9.3 billion in the 2011 upfront.  This projection is a boost over last year’s tally of $8.1 billion to $8.7 billion.

Later this month, NBC debuts its new half-hour comedy Friends With Benefits about five friends having difficulties finding love.  NBC targeted the sitcom to premiere June 25 with back-to-back episodes airing on Saturdays at 8p.  Friends With Benefits, starring Ryan Hansen and Danneel Ackles was originally planned as a midseason show.

After a tumultuous frosh season, MTV pulled the risque teen drama Skins from its schedule.  Skins, adapted from a British series, opened with 3.2 million total viewers in January though its second episode plummeted to 1.58 million and its final episode in March rallied to 1.6 million.  Following its debut episode, several advertisers including Taco Bell, General Motors and Wrigley said they would not continue advertising in the show.

New summer series, Tough Cookies from Sharp Entertainment featuring sisters Susan Adair and Linda Blank and their cookie business debuts on Food Network July 11 at 10p.  Tough Cookies follows the sister duo as they operate Crazy Susan’s Cookie Company in Ocean City, NJ.  Half-hour episodes air on Mondays at 10p during the summer.

Half-hour entertainment news show, Dish Nation opens July 25 airing over six weeks on seven specific Fox Television Stations.  The unscripted show showcases the latest news on pop culture, celebrities and current headlines presented by four popular drive-time radio teams from New York, Los Angeles, Detroit and Atlanta.  Dish Nation will air on WWOR/New York; KTTV/Los Angeles; WTTG/Washington, D.C.; WAGA/Atlanta; KSAZ/Phoenix; WJBK/Detroit; and WUTB/Baltimore.  Twentieth Television is distributing the show which is produced by Studio City Productions.

GSN announced a slew of carriage agreements for GSN HD, all launching this summer.  GSN HD originally launched last September and is now available in 25 million homes.  New launches include:

  • Comcast in Chicago; Philadelphia and Harrisburg; Detroit, Jackson, Albuquerque and Monroe, LA.
  • Time Warner Cable in Northeast Ohio; Buffalo and upstate NY; New England.
  • WOW! Internet, Cable and Phone in Cleveland and Columbus; Detroit; and Chicago area.
  • GCI in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan, Palmer, Petersburg, Seward, Sitka, Valdez, Wasilla and Wrangell, AK.
  • Blue Ridge Communications in Pennsylvania.
  • Cinergy MetroNet in Indiana.
  • Foothills Broadband in Kentucky.
  • Midcontinent Communications in Huron, Yankton, Spearfish, Rapid City, Mitchell, Aberdeen, Watertown, Pierre and Sioux Falls, SD; Bowman, West Fargo, Grand Forks, Bismarck and Devil’s Lake, ND.

Danny Glover tapped to star in FOX’s drama pilot Touch playing opposite Kiefer Sutherland.  FOX is expected to premiere Touch in midseason.  The plot is about a dad (Sutherland) and his autistic and mute son (David Mazouz) who can predict events before they happen.  Glover will play Arthur DeWitt, a professor who works with gifted children.  The drama is from Tim Kring, creator of Heroes who also wrote the script and is executive producing with Sutherland, Katherine Pope and Peter Chernin. 20th Television and Chernin Entertainment are producing.

New legal drama, The Firm from Entertainment One (eOne) and Sony Pictures Television Network handed Josh Lucas (The Lincoln Lawyer, Sweet Home Alabama) the starring role.  The television series is based on the novel by John Grisham and Grisham and Lukas Reiter are set to serve as executive producers.  Lucas will play attorney Mitchell McDeere (the same role Tom Cruise played in the feature film) and the plot picks up McDeere’s story about ten years later after the action in the novel and film.

A couple of former regular cast mates of ABC’s now canceled daytime drama All My Children are reprising their roles this summer.  Eva La Rue, star of CBS’ CSI: Miami will appear in several episodes as Dr. Maria Santos Grey.  Josh Duhamel, currently starring in the upcoming Transformers movie, will be back in his past role as con artist Leo du Pres.

Mark Pellegrino, presently co-starring in Syfy’s Being Human landed a recurring role on the final season of TNT’s The Closer, cites THR.  Pellegrino will play Gavin Q. Baker III, a former city attorney-turned-partner in a private law firm that never loses a case.  Pellegrino will appear in at least five episodes of The Closer which premieres its seventh and final season July 11 at 9p on TNT.

Starz’ upcoming original series Magic City, slated to launch in 2012, announced its complete cast: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olga Kurylenko, Jessica Marais, Steven Strait, Christian Cooke and Danny Huston along with Dominik Garcia Lorido, Elena Satine, Kelly Lynch, Michael Rispoli, Yul Vazquez and Seymour Cassel.  Production started in Miami this week on Magic City which was created by writer/producer Mitch Glazer.  Starz ordered 10 episodes of the drama about mobsters in Miami circa late 1950’s.  Glazer is the executive producer; Dwayne Shattuck is also producing and Ed Bianchi is co-producing.

Despite not picking up the comedy pilot from Rob Schneider for the fall, CBS apparently ordered several more scripts and may premiere the comedy in midseason, reports EW.  Schneider wrote the pilot about a bachelor who marries into a tight-knit Mexican-American family; Eric and Kim Tannenbaum are the executive producers.

Production begins this summer in Fort Lauderdale, FL for the third season of Mission Beach USA for RTE Ireland produced by Rival Media.  RTE commissioned eight half-hour episodes of the new season about a group of teens who train in the tough Lifeguard Summer School.  The first season of the series was made for BBC2 in the UK though season two was made exclusively for RTE and was a big hit for the Irish network after it premiered last fall.

Casting Call: 51 Minds Entertainment, behind the series Rock of Love and For the Love of Ray J, are seeking women in the NY/NJ/CT/PA area who are, or have been a mistress to appear in a new pilot for a major cable network.  The project will feature four women who have funny, heartbreaking or over-the-top stories about their relationships with married men (the men will not be revealed).  To apply, or to recommend a friend, send an email to Kate at: [email protected].
