CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

07/09/04

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 9, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

No surprise here – Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) has asked UPN for a private screening of Amish in the City before it hits the air later on this month.  When UPN originally announced this series back in January at TCA, Pitts said he didn’t want to see any of the 18,000 Amish population from his state to be ‘put in a cage and laughed at.’  No word yet from UPN as to whether or not they’ll supply Pitts with the screener.

Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain has signed a long-term agreement for the regional cable rights to the Colorado Rockies that includes airing the games as well as part ownership in the team itself.  Fox will put in approx $20 million to pick up a 12% piece of the Rockies action.  The deal to carry the baseball games will cost the net approx $200 million over the course of the ten year deal, not including the $20 million ownership payment.  A new area cable network Altitude Sports & Entertainment owned by Stan Kroenke who also owns the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche, is moving the games of his two teams off Fox Sports Rocky Mounting, to put on his own network, and was looking at trying to steal away the Colorado Rockies games once their deal with Fox ended after the 2007 season.  The move creating a new sense of urgency for Fox to re-up with the MLB Colorado Rockies.

John McEnroe‘s premiere on CNBC Wednesday night picked up 266,000 total viewers at 10pm, which is an improvement of the season-to-day average of 45%.  A good first volley.

Fox out foxed the other bcst networks on Wednesday night among A18-49 averaging a 3.2/10 for the evening according to Nielsen Media Research.  Fox began with That 70’s Show (2.8/10), dropped just one share point at 830 for Quints, up at 9pm for Simple Life (4.6/14 – also the highest rated half hour of the night in this demo), and finishing with Method & Red’s 2.6/8.  Next Action Star on NBC at 8pm found a slim audience with a 1.8/6, while two eps of Law & Order forged a 3.0/9 for the pair. ABC’s sitcom block from 8-10p delivered a 2.5/8, while CBS 9-10 sitcom hour found a 2.3/7.  At 10p, 48 Hours on CBS earned a 2.7/8, behind the 10p ep of Law & Order (3.4/10) and well ahead of ABC’s Ultimate Love Test 1.9/6.

If you missed it the first time around, CBS will re-air The Amazing Race premiere episode on Saturday, at 8pm.

Nothing official – thus far it’s just rumor that David Elstein (Five’s former CEO) is interested in purchasing the Hallmark Channel with an estimated 750 million euro bid.  If the deal follows through, Elstein will have command over the UK Hallmark Channel, its operations in over 120 nations and the channel’s vast film library.  Bids have reportedly been placed by Sony with additional attention from Disney, Liberty Media, MGM, News Corporation, Time Warner and Turner.  The Hallmark Entertainment-owned and Crown Media-run Hallmark Channel will end the initial bidding period by the end of July with an anticipated fall closing.

Friday Fun Fact:  Pine, spruce, or other evergreen wood should never be used for BBQ-ing. These woods, when burning or smoking, can add harmful tar and resins to the food. Only hardwoods should be used for smoking and grilling.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1877 – The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon, then a suburb of London.  Twenty-one amateur men showed up to compete.  In addition to establishing the sport’s most famous tournament, the All England Club also formalized many of the modern rules of tennis.  It was forced to bend slightly with the times in 1968, when it agreed to welcome professional players.  Wimbledon remains the only major tennis tournament played on grass.
