Good morning. It’s Friday, July 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Fox Sports is revvin’ up for this year’s Midsummer Classic, announcing broadcast plans for Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game from Phoenix’s Chase Field. Joe Buck will team with Tim McCarver to call the action, with McCarver now working his 20th All-Star Game as a broadcaster. Chris Rose will handle hosting duties, teaming with analysts Eric Karros and Mark Grace. The team has lined up 21 cameras and 80 microphones for the game, including the Fox “X-MO,” a special camera situated behind home plate that shoots at up to 500 frames-per-second. The company lined up Brad Pitt to narrate a special pregame open to air at 8p that honors past and present All-Stars and celebrates the game of baseball.
As expected, as part of pregame coverage, the network will offer a world premiere preview of The X Factor, before the game.
Negotiations on a new revenue-sharing deal may lead to the US bidding to host the 2020 Summer Games, according to the AP. Frustration from the international community over the USOC’s 20% cut of global sponsorship revenues and a 12.75% take of U.S. broadcast rights deals helped lead to defeats for New York and Chicago in previous attempts to land the Games. National Olympic Committees have until Sept. 1 to submit the names of any cities applying for hosting duties. Among the cities that could be at play are New York, LA, Dallas, Minneapolis and Tulsa, according to the report.
TNT is gearing up for a special audio-enhanced telecast of this weekend’s first-ever Sprint Cup Series race from Kentucky Speedway. As part of the coverage, the network will nearly double the number of microphones being used, adding an additional 40 around the track to boost the listening experience for NASCAR viewers. The network will also bolster audio from in-car communication between the drivers and race crews and will continue to mic-up select crew chiefs and their teams through Inside Trax. Pre-race coverage begins at 6:30p.
A Delaware judge has turned down a motion by Dodgers owner Frank McCourt asking him to order Major League Baseball to turn over documents to be used in the team’s bankruptcy case. Judge Kevin Gross sided with the league Thursday, stating that the information the Dodgers were seeking was not relevant to the immediate issue of the team’s proposed bankruptcy financing plan.
The one and only Jim Nantz, who serves as lead play-by-play announcer for The NFL on CBS, will become the 2011 recipient of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award, which recognizes “long-time exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football.” He will accept the award on Aug. 5 during the Enshrinees dinner, where the Hall of Fame Class of 2011 will receive their gold jackets. Previous recipients of the honor in recent years include Chris Berman, Irv Cross, Don Meredith and Lesley Visser.
Audience appetites for soccer continue to grow. After Gold Cup broadcasters reported record viewership, ESPN is rolling with its coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The match between the U.S. Women’s National Team against Colombia on Saturday was seen by 1.87 million people, based on a 1.4 coverage rating on ESPN to make it the most-watched Women’s World Cup match since 1999. Through Sunday, July 3, with 16 matches under its belt, the tournament is averaging a 0.4 rating on ESPN and ESPN2, for a 100% jump from 2007. Household impressions rose 112% to 507,000 and P2+ numbers have grown 150% to 637,000.
ESPN will offer 68 total hours of coverage for golf’s oldest tournament, The Open Championship from July 14-17 from Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England, with 37 slated for live television. ESPN, ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV will have 11 scheduled hours of live coverage of each of the first two rounds of the tournament on July 14-15 beginning at 4a, with third round action on the 16th at 7a, and Sunday’s final round set for 6a. For the 15th consecutive year, Mike Tirico will host ESPN’s telecasts from the Open Championship with Scott Van Pelt and Terry Gannon.
The Longhorn Network has locked down its studio site as well as some faces for its upcoming launch on Aug. 26, according to multiple reports. The joint ESPN/University of Texas cable channel will call an office building at the University Park development home with ESPNU veteran Lowell Galindo set to serve as the main anchor, along with Kevin Dunn. Fox Sports alumni Samantha Steele serve as reporter.
Alabama and Virginia Tech will open their 2013 football seasons in a battle in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, according to organizers. This year’s game will feature Boise St. squaring off against Georgia on Sept. 3.
Weekend updates:
- Tennis Channel is set to provide exclusive coverage of the United States’ and Spain’s Davis Cup quarterfinal competition in Austin, Tex., this weekend with live telecasts of each match and same-day replays beginning at 3p. The faceoff will consist of two singles matches on Friday, followed by the doubles match on Saturday and concluding with the remaining singles play Sunday. Each of the five matches is worth one point, with the team that wins at least three points advancing to the semifinals to face Germany or France, on Sept. 16-18.
- CBS Sports Spectacular will take on surfing this weekend with the U.S. Open of Surfing on Saturday beginning at 1p. More than 500,000 people attend the event, which takes place along a 14-acre stretch of sand on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier. Sal Masekelais set to call the action.
BYUtv has announced that they will hold the first official event of the newly-independent BYU football team to usher in the season. The event will take place at the new BYU Broadcasting building and, in partnership with ESPN, will feature two live studio sessions, two 1-hour True Blue specials, three live webcasts, and a rebroadcast of the Cougars’ victory over rival Utah in 2000.
HDNet will feature Shark Fights 17 on Friday, July 15. The main event will feature a rematch between Jake Rosholt and Matt Horwich.
Russia is preparing to take the Olympic torch where it has never gone before, into space, according to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov. In an effort to shore up support before hosting the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, the country will take the torch as well to the top of the country’s highest mountain as well as to the bottom of the world’s deepest lake to create the longest-ever Olympic relay.
ESPN is kicking off its annual “My Wish” series, which will award sport-themed experiences in partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Every wish will be featured on a SportsCenter segment beginning at 8a on July 17 and running through July 20. Among the dreams made true for children with life-threatening medical conditions will be playing with the likes of Landon Donovan of the Los Angeles Galaxy, surfer Bethany Hamilton, Tim Tebow of the Denver Broncos, and the Minnesota Twins.
Major League Baseball Properties is expanding its relationship with Bayer HealthCare in a broadened sponsorship agreement that involves both the Bayer Advanced Aspirin and One A Day brands. Under the deal, One A Day will remain the “Official Multivitamin of Major League Baseball,” a designation it has held since 2008, while in a new agreement, Bayer Advanced Aspirin becomes the “Official Pain Reliever of Major League Baseball.” The multi-year agreement expands Bayer HealthCare’s exclusive rights in the categories, and Bayer will soon announce an MLB-themed promotion for Bayer Advanced Aspirin. In addition, both products will make significant media commitments to national Major League Baseball television rightsholders and will also sponsor featured attractions at MLB All-Star FanFest, which takes place July 8-12 in Phoenix.
Edge Shave Gel is partnering with the UFC in order to identify fighters on the “Edge of Greatness” under a new deal between the two companies, with one fighter getting the chance to become an official spokesman for the gel. Under the leadership of former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn, four rising UFC stars will compete for the public’s endorsement to become the next face of “Team Edge.”
IMG, USA Volleyball and Jose Cuervo have announced the 2011 “Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, a three-event series that features a $500,000 cumulative prize purse, the richest in the U.S. this year and will be televised live on Versus. The Series will debut on Aug. 26-28 at the $200,000 Manhattan Beach Open in California. ,
Digital Fields
After local and national media attention for the 2011 All-Star Game Final Vote Sponsored by Sprint this week, Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox and Shane Victorino of the Philadelphia Phillies were chosen by fans as the winners via online voting. Balloting began on Sunday, following the announcement of 66 All-Star starters and reserves and proceeded to draw a record 32.5 million ballots for starters, eclipsing the previous record of 23.5 million set in 2009.
For the fourth consecutive year, NASCAR is allowing fans to vote online for the 2011 Most Popular Driver in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Voting began yesterday and will run through Nov. 17. This year, for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, fans can go to www.NASCAR.com/nnsmpd and to www.NASCAR.com/ncwtsmpd for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Fans may vote once per day leading up to the Nov. 17 deadline.
The Main Event
The first-ever Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway looks like a good one on Saturday at 7:30 on TNT.
In My Opinion …
- A story that struck me earlier this week was the lockdown on any companies looking to congratulate Derek Jeter in ads. In the story, Jeter’s agent said that organizations may not run ads with Jeter’s image, name, the number 3,000 or the word “captain” in them to commemorate the landmark, save for the sponsors he has a partnership with. I admit, this one has me scratching my head. Obviously, other than using a player’s image and name, mandating that certain words are forbidden in advertisements could make for an interesting free speech case. Anyone out there care to enlighten me on this? Is this over the top or simply necessary in today’s marketplace?
