~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Fans as well as advertisers stepped up in an effort to save cancelled ABC daytime dramas All My Children and One Life to Live.  It was announced yesterday both soaps are saved with a new licensing agreement involving media and production company Prospect ParkDisney/ABC Domestic Television Group brokered the deal which allows Prospect Park to continue production of the soaps.  Prospect Park will produce and deliver the daytime dramas using their current formats and one-hour length via online platforms and to internet-capable TVs.  All My Children is ending its run on ABC September 23 and One Life to Live in January.  “I’m just so happy that ABC found a home where the legacies of All My Children and One Life to Live can continue.  I’m excited for their future with Prospect Park,” said Agnes Nixon, creator of both shows.

In a ruling made yesterday, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the FCC’s 2008 decision not to loosen the TV duopoly, radio ownership or TV-radio cross-ownership regulations.  Many cited yesterday’s decision by the court as a win for the public interest, allowing for competition and diversity in the media marketplace.  Said the Court:

“Today we affirm the 2008 Order with the exception of the newspaper/broadcast cross-ownership rule for which the Commission failed to meet the notice and comment requirements of the Administrative Procedure Act. We also remand those provisions of the Diversity Order that rely on the revenue-based ‘eligible entity’ definition, and the FCC’s decision to defer consideration of other proposed definitions (such as for a socially and economically disadvantaged business, so that it may adequately justify or modify its approach to advancing broadcast ownership by minorities and women.”

The Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) released a statement yesterday based on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision on media ownership:

“We applaud the Media Access Project’s success in this case and we look forward to working with the FCC in crafting a new approach to media consolidation and its affect on the public. We recognize the economic challenges faced by news organizations but we do not believe the appropriate response is to permit a relative handful of giant companies to control the market. The American people deserve thoughtful journalism and diverse viewpoints. This means well-funded public media, new models of nonprofit newsgathering, and robust private entities with economic and editorial independence.”

As part of a new multi-year agreement, Hallmark said its Hallmark Hall of Fame movies will air exclusively on ABC beginning with the 2011-2012 season.  For its 61st television season, the Hallmark Hall of Fame movies will air first on ABC then a week later four encores will air over a week-long period on Hallmark Channel.  The first movie to air on ABC is Have a Little Faith, based on Mitch Albom’s book and the author was also involved in writing the screenplay.  Production on the film is happening now in Michigan by Hallmark Hall of Fame Productions starring Laurence Fishburne, Bradley Whitford and Martin Landau.  A premiere date has not been set though it will air prior to Christmas.

Soon after its series launch, TNT already has renewed Falling Skies for a second season with 10 episodes.  The new second season will premiere in summer 2012. The drama, starring Noah Wyle currently airs on Sundays at 10p.  Falling Skies is from DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg.

A preview of FOX’s upcoming talent competition series, The X Factor will be part of FOX Sports’ Major League Baseball’s 82nd All-Star Game pregame coverage airing next Tuesday at 8p.  The MLB All-Star game will air live and in hi-def immediately following The X Factor preview and a special pregame open hosted by Brad Pitt who offers a tribute to past and present All-Star players and the game of baseball.  The X Factor debuts over four hours on two nights, September 21 and 22 from 8-10p both nights.

Real-life series Billy The Exterminator is back on A&E Network with a fourth season opening August 2 at 9p.  Throughout 26 half-hour episodes, Billy Bretherton and his family-run pest control business take to the road for the first time in search of creepy creatures such as giant pythons in the Florida Everglades to 30-pound geese in North Carolina.  The series is produced by September Films, a unit of DCD Media for A&E.

Strange and extreme real-life emergency room cases are the focus of Discovery Fit & Health’s new series Bizarre ER, premiering July 16 at 10p.  New episodes air each Saturday at 10p.  Bizarre ER originally aired on UK’s BBC3 and the network acquired all four seasons of the series which begins with When Golf Balls Attack on July 16 at 10p followed by Snapped Bones at 1030p.  The series is produced by Maverick Television.

Former kidnapping victim, Elizabeth Smart will serve as a contributor for ABC News programs.  Now in her early 20s, Smart is a music student at Brigham Young University and she will offer her perspective on stories involving national missing persons and child abduction cases.

MTV’s season three opener of Teen Mom on Tuesday posted a 3.3 coverage rating among P12-34 as well as 3.65 million total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Live Well Network, a broadcast, online and wireless service for emerging digital channels in local markets made an affiliation deal with WSJV/FOX 28 in South Bend-Elkhart, Indiana.  Owned by Quincy Newspapers, the station reaches a dual state area, both northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.  WSJV joins 28 other affiliates of the Live Well Network with eight owned by ABC, nine by Scripps, five by Belo Corp., two Lilly Broadcasting and one from LKK Group.  Live Well Network now reaches 40% of the US TV households.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Nicole Richie and fashion designer John Varvatos join NBC’s new competition series, Fashion Star as mentors.  The premise of the show will search for America’s next hit brand using celebrity mentors and inviting viewers to instantly purchase contestants’ designs each week after episodes air.

NBC’s Parenthood sees two actors returning to the series for its third season.  Michael B. Jordan is back in his recurring role of Alex and Jason Ritter also made a deal to reprise his role.  Parenthood is produced by Universal Media Studios and debut September 13.
