Good morning. It’s Friday, July 30, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
While Fox did win the night on Wednesday with three original eps including Simple Life 2, the other big winner for the night was UPN who marked a 380% increase over the same night one week ago among A18-49, and a 140% increase over the same night one year ago in the same demo. Nothing like a little controversy and a lot of press, to get viewers to stand up and take notice of the latest reality show – Amish in the City (New Line Television/Stick Figure Prods). It will be interesting to see if the 2-hour premiere was compelling enough to carry this audience forward (don’t you just love Mose?). For the night, Fox earned a 2.7/8 A18-49 rating for the night according to Nielsen Media Research. UPN was #2 for the night hot on Fox’s heels with a 2.4/7. Each of the big 3 nets fell back to a tied 1.7/5. Fox led the 8pm hour with That 70’s Show [r] (2.5/9) and Quintuplets (2.4/8). Immediately followed, and tied in share, are UPN’s firs hour of Amish in the City (2.3/8) tied with My Wife & Kids [r]. At 9pm Fox again led with Simple Life (3.7/11) and Method & Red (2.3/6); with the UPN’s Amish (2.5/7) ahead of CBS’ King of Queens [r] (2.1/6) and Two and a Half Men [r] (2.6/7). At 10p NBC had a slight lead over ABC and CBS (1.7/5 vs. 1.2/4).
By the way, WLYH/Lancaster PAdid air Amish in the City (albeit one day late) after seeing the Wednesday night premiere and finding it was not disrespectful to the Amish kids or the Amish community. It aired last night. No word yet about what Rep Pitts thought of the show.
Before they’ve even hit the air this fall, two ABC drama series – Desperate Housewives and Lost – have been sold oversees to Channel 4 and E4. Both series are produced by Touchstone and distributed by Buena Vista Int’l Television. Desperate Housewives debuts on ABC September 25; Lost debuts on September 23.
Reality Central will heretofore be known as Reality 24/7. And part of that reality are new Board members that include former FOX Chairman Lucie Salhany, William Morris Agency Pres/CEO Jim Wiatt and Technology Investment Leader David Siminoff. Heading up Reality 24/7 is Chairman Kay Koplovitz, founder of cable’s USA Network and The SCI FI Channel. Pres/CEO Larry Namer is one of the two network founders; Blake Mycoskie is COO and the other founder. www.reality24-7.com
Did I hear you saying just the other day, where the heck has John Larroquette been? I thought that was you. Well, he’s been busy preparing for production of a triple set of murder mystery movies for the Hallmark Channel. Titled McBride, the first of the three is scheduled to debut on January 9, 2005. McBride is a cop turned lawyer, with a hankering for only the toughest cases. Dean Hargrove, exec producer of the Columbo mystery series, created McBride. Larroquette will also star in another Hallmark movie, Wedding Daze, set to air on September 6.
Fox has ordered 10 more episodes of Trading Spouses after seeing the success of its first two outings, and more particularly that the show grew in its second week over Week #1 by 31% in the key A18-49 demo.
ESPN has ordered 8 episodes of a new reality show called I’d Do Anything (TWI/Mess Media) which takes three contestants, puts them through a series of elimination challenges, according to Variety. The last one standing wins a sports fantasy for a friend or loved one – for instance, playing golf with Tiger Woods (if any of you would like to win that one for me, I’d be okay with that). Rob Horowitz of TWI, Scott Messick of Mess Media and Steve Mayer are exec producers. I’d Do Anything debuts on September 28.

Nothing like a little intrigue to give you grist for that BBQ party this weekend — Pierce Brosnan says no, MGM says we’re not saying. And the question Alex? Will Pierce Brosnan do one more 007 movie? The 21st Bond film is due out in November 2005 and is currently in development. Says MGM, casting issues have not yet been addressed. Brosnan’s deal ended with the last Bond film, but when questioned over the last couple of years he has always said he was a willing and able Bond, James Bond.

Herb Scannell in addition to his current responsibilities, will take on the management of Paramount Parks and Viacom Consumer Products. Bill Roedy, President/MTVN International, will add Paramount Comedy Channel UK and Paramount Comedy Spain to his list of 71 int’l cable channels.
Peter Chernin has signed on for another 5-year tour as Pres/COO of NewsCorp. His previous contract was set to expire in November. The deal took about a year to finalize, in part because Chernin was looking for a clause that allowed him to back out of the deal were he offered a CEO position elsewhere. No word of he got what he asked for.
