NBC decided to take its new hour-long romantic comedy Love Bites off the schedule for this fall, replacing it in the 10p Thursday time slot with Donald Trump’s The Apprentice. Several issues befell the comedic anthology series recently as showrunner Cindy Chupack asked to depart the series; previously actress Jordana Spiro left the show because she was contractually obligated to remain on the TBS comedy My Boys; and the character played by actress Becky Newton must be reworked as she played a virgin in the pilot episode though in real life she is now pregnant. The Apprentice will air for 13 weeks and NBC may opt to launch Love Bites in or before January 2011. Production on Love Bites had not yet begun and will not start for several more weeks as executive producers work out all the extenuating issues. NBC continues to stick to the 13-episode order for Love Bites, produced by Universal Media Studios and Working Title Television.
2010 FIFA World Cup Ratings Update: Nielsen reports to date 99.2 million US viewers or 34% of all US television viewers have tuned into at least six minutes of the 2010 FIFA World Cup telecasts on either English or Spanish-language networks. This number exceeds the reach of the entire World Cup viewership in 2006 at 91.4 million viewers. This year’s World Cup continues through July 11. Nielsen also ranked the local markets through the Round of 16 and Miami-Ft. Lauderdale is the top World Cup market for both English and Spanish-language viewing.
National Geographic Channel’s new season premiere of Locked Up Abroad Wednesday at 10p delivered 846,000 total viewers and a 0.63 rating among A25-54, marking the series’ highest-rated telecast with this demo.
MSG Media released a statement about Dish Network’s decision to take its national music network Fuse off its line-up:
- “As the premiere national television network dedicated exclusively to music, Fuse has become a destination for passionate music lovers. With its unique mix of original programming, live concerts and unparalleled access to the iconic venues and assets of Madison Square Garden, Fuse provides viewers with one-of-a-kind music programming. Unfortunately, Fuse viewers are the latest casualties of Dish Network’s history of disputes with programmers at the expense of their customers. We offered Dish fair and reasonable proposals, including the opportunity to extend our current agreement while we continued to negotiate. On behalf of Dish’s customers, we are disappointed that Dish has made the decision to drop Fuse and we urge them to return to the negotiating table so that we can reach a fair agreement.”
In its own press release yesterday, DISH Network said it replaced MSG Media’s Fuse with MTV Networks’ hi-def music channel, Palladia. DISH Network is offering Palladia to those customers who subscribe to America’s Top 200 and above package. Additionally, DISH Network is making Palladia available in hi-def as part of its Platinum programming package. Palladia showcases music content from MTV, VH1 and CMT.
Yesterday, DirecTV announced its plans to launch the country’s first selection of 3D channels. One is n3D, a linear channel powered by Panasonic as an exclusive carrier of 3D programming and viewable on 3D television sets; another one is DirecTV Cinema in 3D showcasing such Imax titles as Deep Sea 3D and Under the Sea 3D; and the third channel is the previously launched ESPN 3D which debuted June 11 the same day ESPN kicked off its World Cup soccer coverage.
HGTV ordered more episodes of two of its real estate-themed series, Property Virgins and My First Place. Property Virgins features Certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager, Sandra Rinomato as she counsels home buyers on how to find the right property. Produced by Cineflix Productions, the half-hour Property Virgins airs on HGTV Mondays and Wednesdays in one-hour blocks at 8p. My First Place follows first-time home buyers as they search for the perfect home. Produced by High Noon Productions, My First Place now airs on Tuesdays at 8p and 830p and also on Thursdays at 8p. Both series rank in HGTV’s top ten primetime programs among A18-34.
The CW’s 90210 is adding former Passions soap star Blair Redford in a recurring role for the show’s third season. Redford will play Oscar and his character is described as a handsome and charming Brit who is also a troublemaker. The CW will debut the new fall season of 90210 on September 13 at 8p.
Denise Richards, last seen on the E! reality show, Denise Richards: It’s Complicated landed a recurring role on Spike TV’s football-themed series Blue Mountain State, reports US Magazine. Richards’ character, Debra is Ed Marinaro’s ex-lover and she will debut in the third episode of the second season. Blue Mountain State is scheduled to premiere season two on October 20.

Friday Fun Fact: When Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835 – Halley’s comet was visible in the sky over Florida, Missouri. Aware that he was born when Halley’s comet was visible, Mark Twain predicted in 1909 that he would die when it returned. He was right. When Mark Twain died on April 21, 1910, Halley’s comet was once again visible in the sky.
This day in History: 2005 – MTV and VH1 aired the eight hours of the Live 8 concerts. The performances, featuring artists U2, Coldplay, Madonna, Dave Matthews Band, Jay-Z and Destiny’s Child among many others, were held in eight cities to raise awareness of poverty in Africa
Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: This current sitcom aired an episode in an earlier season where an extra proposed another extra, his girlfriend, during a scene of the show. This was an actual real life surprise proposal and it was worked into the script after gaining permission from the producers. On what show did this happen? HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Kudos to: Melissa Sofo-Turner Broadcasting Sales/NY; Corey Chu-NBC Universal/NY; Chris Schwieterman-Gray Television/Tallahassee; Marty Bucci-HRP/NY; Corey Marsh-Prospect Park/LA; Pat Brady-CESD/LA; Amy Coombs-Film Roman/LA; Lindsay Smith-CJ Entertainment/Toronto
Today’s Trivia Question: These adorable twin boys were introduced during the middle of season three of this family drama. Interestingly, the twins were actually played by quadruplets – and one of those was a girl! On what show were these little guys? Remember … we’re off now until July 12, so look for the answer to this question a week from Monday! (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
