Good morning. It’s Friday, July 27, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NBA revealed its slate of games for the new season, and the league’s national television partners-TNT, ESPN and NBA TV- didn’t take long to announce which games that will hit their airwaves this year.
ESPN’s multiplatform coverage of the 2012-13 NBA season will include 90 games, including 15 broadcasts on ABC and 75 on the flagship. The action starts with a doubleheader on Nov. 2 featuring the Knicks/Heat at 8p and Clippers/Lakers at 10:30p. Other season highlights will be five Christmas Day games on ABC and ESPN that will be headlined by an ABC doubleheader featuring a Knicks/Lakers game at 3p and a Thunder/Heat Finals rematch at 5:30p. ESPN will run Celtics/Nets at noon, Rockets/Bulls at 8p and Clippers/Nuggets at 10:30p. Six teams will max out their allowance on ESPN with 10 appearances by the Bulls, Clippers, Lakers, Heat, Knicks and Thunder. The Nets, Celtics, and Spurs will appear nine times each.
Around the dial on TNT, Turner Sports will mark its 29th year of NBA coverage with 52 games during the 2012-13 NBA regular season that included10 appearances by the Heat, Knicks and Thunder; with nine by the Lakers, Clippers and eight by the Celtics and Mavericks. The NBA season opens on the channel with a doubleheader on Oct. 30 pitting the Celtics/Heat at 8p, followed by the Mavericks/Lakers at 10:30p. The channel also hosts the NBA All-Star 2013 on Feb. 17.

Over on NBA TV, the league’s channel will feature 96 live regular season games this season, beginning with the New Orleans Hornets and the debut of top pick Anthony Davis, facing the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, October 31, at 8p. The network’s Wednesday doubleheader will also include the Lakers hosting the Trail Blazers at 10:30p. NBA TV will also feature the Rockets’ Jeremy Lin’s only return to Madison Square Garden this season to face his former team on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7:30p. The season will see 20 doubleheaders and as many as nine appearances by the Heat, Thunder, Knicks, Lakers, Clippers, Celtics, Spurs, Nets, Bulls, Warriors, Timberwolves and Jazz.
College basketball locked in the fields, matchups and schedules for a number of tournaments for the upcoming season. ESPN announced that its early-season tournaments will be shown across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 beginning November 15, 16 & 18 with the Charleston Classic and Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Teams will compete at the Anaheim Classic and Old Spice Classic Thanksgiving Week November 22, 23 & 25 and the tournament action wraps up with the Diamond Head Classic over Christmas December 22, 23 & 25. A minimum of 28 games will air on ESPNU and 18 on ESPN2, while ESPN3 will be the home to 12 tournament games. The Charleston Classic will include Auburn, Baylor, Boston College, Charleston, Colorado, Dayton, Murray State and St. John’s. The Puerto Rico Tip-Off this year features Akron, Massachusetts, UNC Asheville, NC State, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Providence and Tennessee. November’s Anaheim Classic brings in Cal, Drake, Drexel, Georgia Tech, Pacific, Rice, Saint Mary’s and Xavier. The Old Spice Classic will see Clemson, Davidson, Gonzaga, Marist, Oklahoma, UTEP, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. Finally, December’s Diamond Head Classic pits Arizona, East Tennessee State, Indiana State, Miami (FL), Ole Miss, San Diego State and San Francisco.
The EA Sports Maui Invitational also revealed its official bracket, with the tournament set to be shown on the ESPN networks starting Nov. 19. The action opens Butler/Marquette at 3:30p on ESPN2, followed by Mississippi St./North Carolina at 6p, ESPNU carries Texas/Chaminade at 9:40p followed by USC/Illinois at midnight on ESPN2.
CBS Sports Network and the United Football League locked in an agreement that will bring the four-year-old league’s games to national television. As part of the deal, CBS Sports Network will televise two games per week every Wednesday and Friday live throughout the UFL’s eight-week season, which wraps up with the Championship game in late November. Coverage begins Wednesday, Sept. 19 and Friday, Sept. 21.
Brian Monihan has been promoted to President of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia. He joined the network in 2009 as Senior Vice President and General Manager.
Just down the 95, Rebecca O’Sullivan-Schulte was promoted to President of Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. O’Sullivan-Schulte has previously served as Senior Vice President and General Manager since joining Comcast SportsNet in March 2007
E:60 correspondent Rachel Nichols has been tapped to serve as the sideline reporter for ESPN’s season-openingnMonday Night Football doubleheader game between the Chargers and Raiders on Sept. 10. She will work with the previously announced commentator team of Chris Berman and Trent Dilfer with kick off slated for 10:15p following the Bengals/Ravens game.
HRTV will cover the Olympics from a different perspective, announcing “Equestrian News from the London Games,” which will offer up-to-date information from London, beginning on Saturday, July 28. HRTV’s coverage of the Equestrian portion of the Games will be headlined by a daily episode of Rudall’s Round-Up: Greenwich, hosted by Jenny Rudall.
MSG is bringing together Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (at least their younger selves) for a TV showcase that will look at their past fights. The channel will feature Fight Sports: MEGA Fights! On Sunday nights over the next seven weeks starting this weekend at 8p. The episodes will feature either a Pacquaio or Mayweather fight in every show.
NHL Network will reair the fourth season of Caps Red Line presented by GEICO for the firth time on July 31 at 6p. The series airs on Comcast SportsNet during the regular season and features a behind-the-scenes look at the Washington Capitals players and event.
Steve Karasik has been promoted to Senior Coordinating Producer, CBS Sports after a run as Coordinating Producer at the company. Karasik joined the company in 1995.
The United States Olympic Committee and 24 Hour Fitness agreed to a sponsorship extension that will see the continue to sponsor the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams through the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As part of the renewal, 24 Hour Fitness will continue to provide U.S. athletes with state-of-the-art equipment at the three U.S. Olympic Training Centers in Chula Vista, Calif., Colorado
With the Olympics finally here, Golf Channel is slating a four-year “Golf Returns to the Olympics” campaign that will celebrating golf’s return to the Olympics at the 2016 Rio Games after a 112-year absence. The campaign will feature 60-, 30- and 15-second spots with U.S. and international stars that discusses their own Olympic dreams. The initial phase of the campaign starts tonight and will runs throughout the London Games.

Social network ConnecTV announced the launch of “Watercooler,” a 24-hour chat destination for TV trends featuring experts and on-air hosts from news, sports and entertainment. The premiere will feature the gold medal team of Greg Louganis, Aaron Peirsol, Amanda Beard, and Eric Fonoimoana, as the discuss the Games in London. The company announced that the ConnecTV companion experience will include live results, bios, news aggregation, polls and trivia.
