Beginning this fall, Norah O’Donnell will become Co-Host of CBS This Morning joining Charlie Rose and Gayle King. O’Donnell has been CBS News’ Chief White House Correspondent since June 2011. CBS News Chairman and 60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeff Fager said, “This is a very exciting development for our morning program and for all of CBS News. Norah is an accomplished reporter with all the skills for the job. She’s a hard worker who knows her story and, as she has shown time after time at the White House, she can think on her feet on live television.” Erica Hill who has been a co-host of CBS This Morning and assisted with its launch is in discussions with CBS News about a new role. O’Donnell will additionally continue as the primary substitute anchor for Face the Nation and will also continue to report for all CBS News broadcasts and platforms.
Former CBS News anchor Katie Couric will be launching her new daytime talk show, Katie in national syndication September 10. The one-hour show, distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television has been cleared in 95% of the US and will broadcast live from New York City in front of a live studio audience. Couric additionally serves as executive producer along with Jeff Zucker. At the TCA press tour yesterday in Los Angeles, Couric also revealed her show will feature a theme song, This Day composed by Sheryl Crow and her collaborator Jeff Trott and also performed by Crow.
An Indian Jones-style expedition is the focus of Animal Planet’s new series Lost Treasure Hunters, premiering August 24 at 10p. A five-member group of prospectors, gemologists and miners journey to an ancient Indian city in the Golconda region known as the possible source for the world’s most valuable diamonds including the Hope Diamond and the Koh-i-nor. The team will encounter a number of obstacles such as extreme weather conditions, poisonous snakes as well as a superstitious native culture. Ping Pong Productions is producing Lost Treasure Hunters for Animal Planet.
The five-part unscripted series, One Car Too Far will air on Discovery Channel beginning August 19 at 9p, per THR. The series, from Discovery Networks International is the first co-produced series with the international unit. The series is about former British Special Forces soldier Gary Humphrey and Southern California-based car enthusiast Bill Wu as they try to survive remote locations in Chile using their skills and a car.
Lifetime’s upcoming new series The Week the Women Went has moved its premiere date to August 14 at 10p following Dance Moms. Jeff Foxworthy narrates the five-episode series that explores what happens in an American town when all the women leave and the men have to run the households, businesses and community. BBC Worldwide Productions is producing. In addition, the recently-announced new docu-series Prom Queens will rejoin Lifetime’s schedule at a later date. The Week the Women Went was previously scheduled to bow on August 15 and Prom Queens on August 14.
Back for a second season, The Incredible Dr. Pol debuts August 25 at 10p on Nat Geo WILD. The series follows veterinarian Dr. Jan Pol who believes in an old-school approach to veterinary medicine as he helps pets and livestock throughout rural Michigan. The Incredible Dr. Pol is produced by National Geographic Television for Nat Geo WILD.
A second season is on tap for the Bayou Billionaires, launching September 15 at 9p on CMT. The Dowden family of Shreveport, LA, whose home sits on the fourth largest deposit of natural gas in the US are the focus and the 12-episode season follows the family as they plan more over-the-top trips and begin to lavishly spend their money. Magilla Entertainment is behind the series.
Bravo Media renewed weekly primetime talk show Kathy for a second season starring Kathy Griffin and featuring a panel of guests and celebrities dishing on the week’s hot topics and public figures. Kathy is produced by Donut Run and Embassy Row for Bravo.
Programming note: TV One will pay tribute to the late actor Sherman Hemsley with two consecutive Friday nights filled with episodes of The Jeffersons featuring Hemsley’s role as George Jefferson. Starting tonight, TV One will air The Jeffersons episodes at 8p to 12a and again on August 3 from 8p to 11p.

Time Warner Cable and Meredith Corp. are close to finalizing a retransmission deal, reports B&C. Just before three markets where Meredith-owned stations were to go dark on Wednesday at 1159p: KCTV-KSMO/Kansas City; WSHM/Springfield; and WSMV/Nashville, Time Warner Cable gave an extension until July 31. Time Warner Cable indicated that there was an agreement in principal with Meredith and a deal is to be reached soon.

Cast members of ABC’s sitcom Modern Family, including those who are embroiled in a lawsuit against the show’s production company as part of the current contract renegotiations that happened earlier this week, were all together at yesterday’s scheduled table read. The first cast gathering for season four was supposed to take place on Tuesday but was moved to Thursday because of the contract talks. The move on the actor’s part was reportedly viewed as a good-faith gesture and talks between the actors’ representatives and 20th Century Fox Television will likely resume later this week.
John Noble, star of FOX’s Fringe is receiving medical treatment which has resulted in production on the fifth and final season being delayed. Production is likely to be picked back up on August 7 and this temporary halt should not interrupt the show’s premiere date.
CBS added Kal Penn (How I Met Your Mother, House) as the co-lead for the half-hour comedy pilot Ex-Men from How I Met Your Mother EP Rob Greenberg.
After six years, Eric Dane who plays Dr. Mark Sloan (aka McSteamy) is leaving ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy to pursue other opportunities. Dane has play Dr. Sloan since the show’s second season will depart Grey’s Anatomy during the upcoming ninth season. He will return for several episodes to close out his character’s story line.
AMC’s Mad Men cast member Elisabeth Moss who plays Peggy will return for the sixth season, reports TVLine. Show creator Matt Weiner confirmed Moss has not left the show despite character Peggy leaving Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce during season five.
The second season of American Horror Story on FX added Jenna Dewan to play opposite Adam Levine. The pair will form The Lovers, a couple central to the show’s plot during season two.
Breakthrough Entertainment has licensed six one-hour episodes of the docu-series Greatest Tank Battles to TVO, Ontario’s public educational media organization. Production on the factual animated series has also started in Toronto.
London and Los Angeles-based Rize USA has been commissioned for three projects in the UK. The first project is a three-part one-hour factual series for BBC Two titled Confessions of a Wedding Planner which is expected to premiere in early 2013 as well as launch in the US and globally with localized versions. Project two is a one-hour documentary film titled The Girl Who Became Three Boys for Channel 4’s True Stories franchise and the third project is another one-hour world exclusive documentary for Channel 4 titled Baby With Two Heads.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment has pre-sold the new ten-part drama Mr. Selfridge (wt) to MASTERPIECE on PBS in the US; Seven Network in Australia; Sweden’s SVT; and to Israel’s YES DBS Satellite Services. Andrew Davies wrote the drama which is executive produced by Kate Lewis for ITV Studios. The plot is set in 1909 London and follows the life of American entrepreneur, Harry Gordon Selfridge played by Jeremy Piven (Entourage) who opened the luxury department store on Oxford Street. The drama has been targeted for debut in 2013.
Comedy Central has launched cable operator VTR in Chile, announced Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) The Americas. Comedy Central Latin America is a 24-hour entertainment network targeting the Latin American audience with sitcoms, movies, acquired programming and more.
Part of its growth plan, ITV plc acquired Norwegian production company Mediacircus which expands ITV’s international content business. Mediacircus was found by Eldar Nakken and Jon Sverre Hoiden in 2006 and has offices in Bergen and Oslo which will now become part of ITV Studios Nordic.

UK’s largest supermarket chain, Tesco, selected Wieden & Kennedy, London to manage its $175 million advertising account after a competitive review. Tesco operates 185 Fresh & Easy stories in the Western US, headquartered in El Segundo, CA which will remain in the hands of Deutsch, Los Angeles. Tesco is the third largest retailer in the world behind Walmart and Carrefour.
Old El Paso, owned by General Mills, named Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH), London to spearhead the brand’s first global campaign in its 74-year history. BBH won against independent London agency 18 Feet and Rising in the final shoot-out. Other companies also pitched the business, Fred & Farid Paris, and UK specialist UK food agency, The Collaborators along with Saatchi & Saatchi New York, which was previously the global lead creative agency. Old El Paso has asked BBH to produce a campaign targeting Europe and Australia.
The Chicago office of Euro RSCG will handle the lead creative duties for Bel Brands’ Laughing Cow and Boursin brands following a review. OMD which handles the media duties is not affected by the review.
