Cynopsis: Sports

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 19, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

HBO Sports locked in a new long-term extension with NFL Films that will keep reality series Hard Knocks around for years to come. The show is slated to return to HBO next month with a five-episode edition spotlighting the Cincinnati Bengals franchise starting Aug. 6 at 10p.

“We are thrilled to have HBO continue as the home of Hard Knocks, the preeminent sports reality series,” said Ken Hershman, President of HBO Sports. “The partnership between HBO and NFL FILMS continually produces unrivaled and groundbreaking television programming.”

Wednesday night’s ESPYs telecast on ESPN saw some early growth, marking a 1.9 overnight score in metered markets to a 19% jump over the 2012 telecast, according to Nielsen. In addition, the network reports that fan balloting this year broke the 23 million mark, up 28% from the 18 million votes tallied a year ago.
Meanwhile, TiVo revealed its top moments of the ESPYs based on its internal data…
1.  10:52p – Chris Berman takes the stage to honor those athletes who have passed.  The list is highlighted by names like, Deacon Jones, Pat Summerall and Dr. Jerry Buss.
2.  10:48p  The Best Moment of the Year award goes to eight year-old Jack Hoffman, a pediatric brain cancer survivor, who had a 69-yard run for Nebraska.  Wearing a Nebraska football jersey covered by a sports jacket, Jack and his father thank ESPN, Nebraska football, and all the people who voted for Jack.  Jack received his last chemotherapy treatment a month ago.
3.  11:30p – Cuban phenom, Yasiel Puig and gold medal gymnast Gabby Douglas presented the award for the Best Play of the Year to Jadeveon Clowney, of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, for his powerful tackle and fumble recovery against Michigan.
4.  10:58p  Florida Gulf Coast wins the award for Best Upset.  Coach, Andy Enfield accepts the award with “Dunk City.”
5.  11:13p – This year’s Jimmy V Perseverance Award was presented to a father-son duo, Dick and Rick Hoyt.  Rick was born with a severe case of cerebral palsy, and Dick, his father, always strived to give him the opportunity to live a normal life. In 1981, Team Hoyt participated in their first marathon with Dick pushing Rick in a modified wheelchair. Since then, they have run in over 1,000 races, and decided to hang up their running shoes at the race where they began their career, The Boston Marathon.

Speaking of awards, the unveiling of the Primetime Emmy nominees saw some candidates surface from the world of sports, including NBC Sports Group with five nominations for its coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics while CBS and NFL Network’s production of the Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show Starring Beyonce is up for three.

NBC Sports Group revealed its picks for CAA Football this fall, with five games set to run on NBC Sports Network. The final game will pit Villanova and Towson on Oct. 12 as part of a double-header.
