Cable’s Emmy haul (108 for HBO alone this year) is nothing new, but now Netflix has muscled in on the territory once owned by broadcast nets, snatching Lead Actor, Lead Actress and Drama spots for political saga House of Cards, as well as an acting nom for Arrested Development‘s Jason Bateman. All together the streaming service earned nine nods for House and three for Arrested, thanks to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 2008 rule change that said serialized shows don’t have to be on TV to be eligible. “Emmy voters very comfortably eliminated the line between Internet and television and said television is about what’s on the screen and not what size the screen is or how the content got there,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos told the Hollywood Reporter. Salt in the wound: for the second year running there are no broadcast nets up for the Outstanding Drama trophy.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Emmy reactions: Homeland executive producer Alex Gansa expressed gratitude for the posthumous writing nomination for Henry Bromell, “A man we really miss every single day.”… “I’m particularly happy for Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright,” said House of Cards Executive Producer Beau Willimon of his lead acting noms. “They are the center of our show’s universe and make every episode shine.”… But leave it to the comedy noms to go for laughs. “Given all the hilarious film work I’ve done, from Traffic to Crash to Flight, it’s nice to finally be recognized for the comic genius I am,” said Don Cheadle, nominated for Lead Actor in House of Lies… “I don’t stand a chance against them,” lamented The Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik of her stiff Supporting Actress competition. “Any of them can win. Except me.”… “Nice try, guys,” said Parks and Recreation‘s Amy Poehler of her Lead actress nod. “I’m not falling for this old trick again.”… Joked Julia Louis-Dreyfus of her Outstanding Lead nod for Veep, a 14th nomination that beat the record of a certain redhead, “It’s taken me decades, but I have finally avenged Lucille Ball. I am euphoric.”… “I’ve never had something so wonderful happen four years in a row before,” said Modern Family Supporting Actor Ty Burrell, “other than winning the NY state lottery from 1993 to 97.”

Bragging rights: Netflix isn’t the only one making history this Emmys. Other nets were crowing about best-evers, too: Sundance Channel earned a record ten noms for minseries Top of the Lake and Restless; between Project Runway and TV-movies Steel Magnolias and Liz & Dick, Lifetime grabbed 12 noms, its best so far; Showtime collected 32 noms, the most in its history, helped mightily by Homeland’s hefty contribution of 11, the most ever for a Showtime show; AMC’s Mad Men is the most-nominated basic cable drama ever, with 12 in 2013 and 97 overall; Oprah Winfrey took herself out of contention for Daytime Emmys after winning her seventh award back in 1999, but her OWN network got its first primetime series nom for Oprah’s Master Class, for Outstanding Informational Series or Special; FX points out its Louie is the first basic cable comedy to be nominated for Outstanding Comedy, and American Horror Story: Asylum‘s pocketful of 17 nominations is more than any other show’s. “What Ryan Murphy and everyone associated with American Horror Story: Asylum have achieved is nothing short of remarkable,” said John Landgraf, Chief Executive Officer, FX Networks and FX Productions. “As for Louie C.K., the guy continues to re-write Emmy history.”

IFC comedy Portlandia was nominated for Outstanding Writing (Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Jonathan Krisel and Bill Oakley) and Outstanding Directing (Jonathan Krisel) for a Variety Series. Did the show’s Emmy campaign, complete with buttons, bumper stickers and a video with political strategist James Carville (“We’re gonna fight like hell!”) help nab the nom? “Absolutely,” IFC President and general manager Jennifer Caserta tells Cynopsis. “It got people talking. When you look at the shows we’re up against, you look at the company we keep, and they’re super impressive shows. We had to do something to stand out.” So will IFC pull out even bigger guns now that trophies are within reach? Any plans to call on, say, Obama? “I don’t have that kind of pull,” laughs Caserta. “But maybe Michelle… ”

Dancing shows waltzed off with armfuls of Emmy noms this year: ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars landed nine noms and Fox‘s So You Think You Can Dance snagged seven. The only competition they’ll face from the crooners for Outstanding Reality-Competition is The Voice. The X Factor didn’t make the cut, and American Idol was shut out for the second straight year. (At least hardest-working-host-on-television Ryan Seacrest got a nod.)

ABC News
nabbed a veteran health expert, David Zinczenko, to serve as its nutrition and wellness editor. The author of the best-selling Eat This, Not That and The Abs Diet was also editorial director of Women’s Health and Prevention magazines, and has appeared on Dr. Oz and Oprah, among other talkers. “David has a true gift for distilling fitness and nutrition information into easily understood practical advice,” said ABC News President Ben Sherwood. “[He] will help our audience know what to eat and how to stay fit for a longer, healthier, happier life.”

Promoting his CBS midseason drama, Intelligence, at Comic-Con, Josh Holloway acknowledged the irony of playing a secret agent with a computer implanted in his brain. “I’m one of the most computer illiterate,” he confessed during a Q& A session. “It’s a funny dichotomy that they picked me to be the tech guy.” The spy drama debuts in February.

Deadlines for submissions for Writer’s Guild Award nominations is Friday, October 11 for television categories. Noms will be announced on Thursday, December 5; simultaneous presentations take place on Saturday, February 1 from the Edison Ballroom New York and LA’s JW Marriott.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

David Frost hasn’t lost his touch. The veteran TV interviewer landed former astronaut Buzz Aldrin and chess legend Garry Kasparov for hour-long sitdowns for the season two of The Frost Interview, on Al Jazeera English.

FOX‘s Simpsons meet the Griffins on a new Family Guy episode titled “The Simpsons Guy.” Stewie is obsessed with Bart, Marge bonds with Lois and Peter and Homer battle over beer in the ep, set to air in fall 2014.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Getting there: Disney and ESPN Media Networks have reached an agreement with Verizon to provide Verizon FIOS customers with their new “TV Everywhere” authenticated services, WATCH ABC, WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney XD and WATCH Disney Junior, as well as upcoming WATCH ABC Family service. “Whether you’re in the family room, in the car, on vacation, on the plane or in grandma’s house,” says Maitreyi Krishnaswamy, director of FIOS TV product strategy and development, “TV everywhere is what it’s all about.” Verizon is also adding the multiplatform lifestyle cable net Fusion, a joint venture between ABC and Univision aimed at Hispanics.

Speaking of… the long arm of FiOS TV is getting longer. The Verizon Communications service now reaches more than 5 million video subscribers, a gain of 12.6% year-over-year; video penetration reached 34.5%.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Adam Pally landed on his feet. Though ABC axed the cult fave sitcom, Happy Endings, where he played Max Blum, in May, the actor is joining The Mindy Project for a multi-episode arc as a doctor in Mindy’s OB/GYN practice (also on staff: James Franco‘s Dr. Leotard).

Follow the yellow brick road! Brooke Shields, Tim Curry, Kenan Thompson and Jim Breuer will guest on Nick Jr.’s The Wonder Pets special, In the Land of Oz. Shields voices a witch in the ep’s premiere at 8:30a on Saturday, July 20.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Emmy nominee The Bible is a hit Down Under. The Channel 9 series premiere on Tuesday won its two-hour time slot, with a 21% share. “We are thrilled with this out-of-the-gate success,” said Executive Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett.

Zig Zag Productions hopes to bring a game show popular in Japan to the UK: Hide and Seek, in which a family hides in their home from a celebrity “seeker.” If the star can’t find them (the family is aided by a team of special effects concealment experts), they win cash. ZigZag also got the rights for a UK remake of Jockey Stars, an Irish reality series, about the search for the next champion jockey, and Wanted, a dating show described as a “social media manhunt.”

Oslo-based Fatstone Media has signed a contract with Ericsson, a provider of communications technology and services, to help launch its outdoor action sports TV channel in Europe. “Ericsson was the right choice of partner, as it is a global company and already manages more than 1.5 million hours of broadcast TV in Europe every year,” said Ann-Mari Albertson, Fatstone CEO. The new channel is to feature “lifestyle sports” like kitesurfing, rock climbing and snowboarding.

~ RATINGS ~

Giuliana & Bill‘s season six premiere earned Style Media its highest-rated show of the year, with 600,000 total viewers. Nice to know that amid a reality show landscape filled with hostile housewives and fractured families, viewers also appreciate a happily married couple whose most pressing issue is finding a good nanny.

Katie‘s moving in the right direction. The ABC talk show hosted by Katie Couric has been a ratings disappointment, but was up 6% in total viewers (2.1 million vs. 2.0 million) the week of July 1. That’s its biggest overall audience in seven weeks.
