~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

With the digital transition date scheduled for February 17 just 28 days after the inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama urged Congress to extend the date to cut-off analog signals. John Podesta, co-chair of the Obama-Biden transition team, sent a letter yesterday to chairs and ranking Republicans on the House and Senate Committees in charge of communications saying that “inadequate funding” of the government led DTV education program and problems with the DTV-to-analog converter box program as reasons for the February 17 date to be “reconsidered and extended.” According to data provided by Nielsen last month, approximately 7.8 million households or 6.8% of total U.S. television homes are still completely unprepared for the DTV transition.

HBO introduces a new comedy series, Eastbound & Down next month centered on a star pitcher who, because of his negative behavior gets kicked out of the MLB and goes home to North Carolina to teach P.E. at his former middle school. The six-episode series opens February 15 at 1030p and stars Danny McBride as Kenny Powers. Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Chris Henchy, Jody Hill, Danny McBride and Ben Best all executive produce.

WWOR-TV and the YES Network jointly announced WWOR/My9 will batter up with 21 h-def New York Yankee games for the 2009 season. WWOR will remain as the exclusive broadcast home of the New York Yankees through the 2011 MLB season.

SCI FI Channel’s winter season debut of Ghost Hunters International Wednesday night at 9p attracted 1.6 million A18-49 viewers, 1.7 million A25-54 viewers and 2.7 million total viewers.

Twentieth Television announced it will not renew The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet for the 2009-2010 season. New episodes of the two-year old weekday show will be produced through June 2009 and broadcast daily until next September. Based in New York, the nationally syndicated show offers celebrity guests, audience participation and covers topics such as health, fashion, parenting and relationships.

Debuting next fall in national broadcast syndication, My Name is Earl has been picked up by more than 25 markets or 47% of the U.S. Distributed by Twentieth Television, Inc., the sitcom has cleared on stations in nine out of the top 10 markets including WNYW-WWOR/New York, KTTV-KCOP/Los Angeles, WFLD-WPWR/Chicago, WPSG/Philadelphia and KDFW-KDFI/Dallas.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Science Channel formed a multi-year talent and content agreement with theoretical physicist and science television contributor Dr. Michio Kaku. The deal allows Science Channel to exclusively produce original series and specials involving Dr. Kaku’s work such as the upcoming 10-part series based on his book Physics of the Impossible. Under the talent portion of the agreement, Dr. Kaku will be an exclusive Science Channel presenter and weekly host of SCI Q Sunday airing at 9p.

National Geographic goes inside a Georgia prison in a new reality series Hard Time slated to premiere February 23 at 9p, cites THR. Producers lived inside the prison for a year to capture footage shown over six hours. National Geographic also will renew a handful of existing series including Dogtown with 10 new episodes; Locked Up Abroad with 13 new episodes; World’s Toughest Fixes with 10 new episodes; Naked Science with 13 new episodes; and Deadly Dozen renewed for a third season.

Thom Beers, CEO/Executive Producer of Original Productions and creator of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, will executive produce a new two-hour scripted movie called Working on the Edge. Philip Segal, President of Original Productions and Karen Wookey will also executive produce and the television movie, under the banner of Working Edge Productions, Inc. The film is expected to premiere on Discovery this year.

Elsewhere for Discovery Channel, THR reports other projects in development:

  • A new 13-episode series from Beers called But Wait . . . There’s More about two ad salesmen who evaluate products to push on television. The series is slated to premiere this spring.
  • From Craig Piligian a reality series called Out of the Wild where suburbanites are taken to the Alaskan wilderness and expected to find their way back to civilization. This eight-episode series will debut in April during Discovery’s Alaska Week.
  • Piligian also will produce a new six-episode series titled Swamp Blogging about a logger who harvests trees in an extreme location.
  • Also from Piligian, a program called Moments of Terror which will be a companion to the freshman Destroyed in Seconds series. Moments of Terror will have 13 episodes profiling people who have had near-death experiences. In addition, Discovery renewed Destroyed in Seconds for a second season.
  • Also new on the slate is the six-part series Seasons of Survival, a co-production from Discovery and the BBC documenting mass seasonal migration from animals, climate change, storms and floods.
  • Discovery is again picking up the docudrama series Lobstermen from Beers for eight new hours. The series originally ran for three episodes in 2007.

Clarification: Casting has started on the alternative series Superstars picked up by ABC with a summer premiere planned. Juma Entertainment and Blue Equity’s Blue Entertainment Sports TV (Best), own the franchise.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Is America really ready for the switch to digital television? Barack Obama doesn’t think so. The President-elect’s team called for a delay in the cutoff of analog TV signals yesterday after The Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports, sent a letter to Capitol Hill late Tuesday requesting that the Feb. 17 transition be postponed to better prepare elderly and poorer consumers who still rely on rabbit ears for their television signals. The requests come days after federal officials announced that the program to distribute $40 coupons to defray the cost of digital converter boxes has run out of money. (The boxes retail for between $50-$80 each, without a coupon.)   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: As Entertainment Rights (ER) continues to search for investors or acquisition partner(s) to work its way out of debt, while drastically reducing its annual costs including workforce, the company is set to sue its US DVD distributor, Genius Products, concerning allegedly unpaid fees, per Variety.  The fees are described as an ‘unspecified amount’.  No word yet on ER’s discussions with its most recent (unnamed) suitor.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
