Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01/08/10
Good morning, it’s Friday, January 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing from CES in Las Vegas.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer introduced two big next-generation products (or lines of products) during a Wednesday night pre-opening keynote at CES that should help Microsoft compete on both the gaming and computing fronts in the coming years. (Hopefully they’ll perform better than the presentation, which suffered from a 20-minute power outage.) “Windows PCs will offer the greatest variety and the most interesting content and entertainment experiences in the world,” he promised. Mr. Ballmer showed off three “Slate PC” prototypes due out later this year including a small HP touchscreen computer running the Kindle software for PC, a mid-sized “Archos” tablet, and a large “Pegatron” tablet designed to showcase full-sized newspaper and magazine pages. More buzzworthy was what Microsoft shared about the Xbox Live platform, likely to be the company’s Trojan Horse in terms of delivering content to the home. The newly revamped Microsoft Mediaroom software suite, which fully integrates with Xbox Live, brings full cloud-based DVR capabilities, a transactional on demand interface and interactive apps to the device’s large established base (39 million worldwide and counting). The Xbox’s new “Project Natal” controller is also due out by Christmas of 2010, utilizing a 3D motion camera to allow gamers to control the action on screen using body movements and voice commands.
Qualcomm’s FLO TV service is teaming with iPhone accessory maker mophie to bring a live TV service to the iPhone and iPod touch platform. Utilizing FLO TV’s recently acquired spectrum, the application and antennae skin will receive TV signals independent of carrier’s networks, eliminating the costly network fee now passed on to consumers. No word yet on what the service, planned to launch later this year, will cost. FLO also announced a robust line up of sports programming for this year, including more than 90 NBA games, 76 MLB games, nearly 200 NCAA football games, including 25 Bowl games and nearly 350 NCAA basketball games.
Blockbuster is teaming with ActiveVideo Networks to utilize its cloud-based interactive video- platform to build a new content delivery service. The deal will add web-based interface features to the Blockbuster On Demand movie service across multiple connected platforms. The idea is to build an interface than can be deployed to virtually any digital set-top or any broadband-connected CE device.
The CW Network is presenting a special sneak peek of the first ten minutes of its new series Life Unexpected on Facebook, beginning Mon., Jan. 11 – a week prior to making its on-air debut on Jan. 18. Ustream will power the video.
Netflix announced new agreements with five global CE manufactures to introduce Netflix-ready devices later this year. Funai (whose brands include Philips, Magnavox, Sylvania and Emerson,) Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp and Toshiba will each introduce Blu-ray players or digital televisions that can stream Watch Instantly movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the home.

After learning much from its digital push during the Beijing games, NBC is gearing up to better monetize thousands of hours of Vancouver Winter Olympics coverage next month, according to Perkins Miller, SVP/Digital Media and GM, Universal Sports, NBC Sports & Olympics. Follow up research from the summer games confirmed that advertisers who bought TV and Digital together during the games saw 31% in brand recognition and a 41% increase in message recall, he said. A big thank you to the NBC Digital Media and NBC Agency folks, who provided the bandwidth necessary to get this edition of Cyn Digital out from the show floor. CEA President/CEO Gary Shapiro forecast slight growth for the consumer electronics industry in 2010 at his opening CES keynote after a tough 2009, when sales fell by nearly 8%. Driving sales will be smartphone shipments – which will comprise more than 30% of total phone shipments this year, netbook sales, Blu-ray adoption and flat panel TV upgrades. The CEA is projecting sales of more than 4 million 3D sets in 2010, despite sticker-shocking prices.
Auto manufactures are positioning the car to be the next big media platform this year. Ford CEO Alan Mullally outlined his company’s vision during his Thursday morning keynote. Despite a huge 3D push by the consumer electronics industry (most TV booths here in Vegas are showcasing expensive 3D models,) the jury is still very much out on whether or not a critical mass of consumers will ever trade up to the format. (The glasses, for one, continue to be a challenge.) Like any other push in this business, it will likely come down to compelling content and the ability to rent a 3D movie at the video store will help proliferation. Sony is doing its part announcing a new stand-alone 3D Blu-ray player with all the other bells and whistles we’ve come to expect from next generation devices, including access to the (slowly expanding) Bravia Internet Video platform, which includes YouTube Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, Pandora, Slacker, and NPR streaming.
