~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Financial guru, Suze Orman will soon have her own series on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network called Money Class (wt). Orman serves as the show’s creator and host as she meets families, couples and individuals across the country, guiding them with attainable financial goals so they can make responsible and well-informed decisions. The series, produced by @radical.media is scheduled to premiere fall 2011.

CNN kicks off Piers Morgan Tonight on January 17 and the first guest on the show will be Oprah Winfrey.

Master photographer Peter Lik is joining The Weather Channel (TWC) in a new half-hour action/adventure nature series set to premiere this March. Lik will also become a contributor to the network participating in segments as he travels to weather hot spots. Lik’s series will follow him as he travels the US in search of the most dramatic natural landscapes. TWC approved 13 episodes of the series produced by Peacock Productions.

BET premieres two new series and renews two others:

  • The network’s new original series Let’s Stay Together debuts January 11 at 11p. This romantic comedy centers on five young African Americans who are in different stages of love and matrimony. Created by Jacque Edmonds Cofer, Let’s Stay Together is a BET Studios Original Production.
  • Toya, who starred on BET’s series Tiny & Toya helms a new series on BET titled Toya: A Family Affair, opening April 19 at 10p. Viewers will follow Toya as she continues her professional and personal ambitions all the while trying to keep her family together and out of trouble. The series is produced by DuBose Entertainment, the company behind Tiny & Toya.
  • The Game returns for a fourth season with a one-hour premiere episode on January 11 at 10p.
  • The Family Crews is back for a second season beginning March 6 at 8p. The series is a BET Studios Original Production.

Travel Channel brings back a fourth season of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern beginning January 18 at 9p. The new season will take viewers deeper into locations where Zimmern reveals the most unusual food traditions. Tremendous! Entertainment produces the show for Travel Channel.

TV One renews three series: reality series LisaRaye: The Real McCoy; a 12-episode order for Unsung spotlighting under-recognized musicians; and a 10-episode order for Life After, focusing on life-changing events in celebrities’ lives. The latter two series are slated for summer premieres.

Animal Planet premieres Mike Tyson’s new six-episode docu-drama Taking On Tyson March 6 at 10p. In this series, the boxing legend returns to his childhood neighborhood where he fosters a lifelong passion for raising pigeons and pigeon racing. Taking On Tyson was created and produced by Touch Productions in association with Tyrannic Productions for Animal Planet.

Science Channel adds two new series:

  • An Idiot Abroad – Eight-episode British series comes to the US starting January 22 at 10p preceded by a special preview episode at 930p. The series features Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant as they surprise their close friend and homebody, Karl Pilkington with a forced trip around the globe to visit the Seven Wonders of the World. Mentorn International produces the series for Science Channel.
  • Ridley Scott is producing a new eight-episode series for the network titled Prophets of Science Fiction that examines such legendary sci-fi artists as Isaac Asimov, Gene Roddenberry and George Lucas. The series, produced for Science Channel by Ridley and Tony Scott, will premiere during the latter half of 2011.

Coinciding with February Black History Month, Investigation Discovery launches a new series from documentary filmmaker Keith Beauchamp and CBS EYE Productions which explores three racially-motivated homicide investigations that happened before 1970. The Injustice Files debuts February 18 at 9p.

BBC America made a marketing and promotional deal with The Weinstein Company (TWC) to showcase their current theatrical hit, The King’s Speech. BBC America will promote the film on the network and via bbc.com and bbcamerica.com especially around shows such as The Tudors, Doctor Who, Law & Order: UK and Royal Wedding programming. Additionally, BBC America will air a 30m documentary special, The King’s Speech: Behind the Scenes as part of a special day honoring the Golden Globes.  (By the way, saw this movie and you MUST see it too … brilliant!  Of course, that’s just my opinion, but I’m right.)

WGN-TV and Chicago Home + Garden magazine are teaming on a new multiplatform home design brand, Bring It Home encompassing a half-hour TV show starting February 13. The weekly TV show will air Sundays at 11a on WGN-TV with encores during the week on CLTV. The brand also includes an online component at www.bringithomechicago.com and a recurring print feature in Chicago Home + Garden magazine.

This Sunday, Granite Broadcasting’s KOFY/San Francisco is debuting two new local shows. Dance Party is re-launching with a new set and host and airs 8p on Sundays. Also on tap is the game show Carpool Showdown, airing on Sundays at 9p.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

After the December 29 special Extreme Couponing delivered 2.1 million total viewers for TLC, the network has ordered it as a new series with 12 half hour episodes. The series follows extreme “super couponers” as they pursue extraordinary deals. Sharp Entertainment produces the series.

Discovery Channel is producing a Chicago version of game show Cash Cab set to debut this summer. Comedian Beth Melewski, alumnus of Second City will host. The New York edition of Cash Cab continues with Ben Bailey as host with new episodes premiering this spring. Cash Cab is produced for the network by Lion Television.

J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot are developing a crime drama series titled Pulp that is described as similar to Quentin Tarantino’s film Pulp Fiction, cites TVLine. Monica Breen and Alison Schapker are penning the script and also serve as executive producers. Bad Robot will begin pitching the project to networks next week.

Nancy Grace reupped her contract to remain as reporter and anchor of Nancy Grace on HLN, reports TVNewser. Grace was apparently offered a position on Fox Business Network though negotiations fell through and she agreed to stay with HLN.

This casting is interested in female celebrities, women married to celebrities, business owners, socialites and more. Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC and NBC both claimed #1 Wednesday night at 2.7/8 each with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s comedies The Middle and Better With You averaged a top-rated 2.6/8 at 8p followed by NBC’s Minute to Win It at 2.1/6 and CBS’ new Live to Dance was third at 1.8/5. More sitcoms on ABC catapulted the network to #1 during 9p as Modern Family and Cougar Town averaged a 3.8/10 with NBC’s two-hour Law & Order: SVU taking second place at 2.9/8 and CBS’ People’s Choice Awards in third at 2.8/7. Then at 10pm, the second hour of Law & Order: SVU on NBC topped at 2.9/9 followed by CBS’ presentation of the People’s Choice Awards at 2.6/8.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman/CEO of Fox Networks Group told staffers yesterday he would be leaving the company as of February 11, 2011. Tony has been with the company for 10 years, joining in 2002. Upon Tony’s departure, Chase Carey, President/COO of News Corporation outlined the new management structure. David Haslingden, presently CEO, Fox International Channels will become President/COO of Fox Networks Group, reporting to Chase Carey. David will supervise development, finance, legal, advertising sales and corporate activities. Furthermore, David Hill, Chairman/CEO, Fox Sports Media Group; Peter Rice, Chairman Entertainment, FNG; and Mike Hopkins, President/Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Fox Cable will all report to Chase Carey. Randy Freer and Eric Shanks together will manage the sports cable channels roster, reporting to David Hill. And, Hernan Lopez will manage Fox International Channels, reporting to David Haslingden.

Crown Media Holdings, owner and operator of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel aligned a new management structure within its senior strategy team and has thus promoted four executives who will all be based at the company’s New York Office.

  • Susanne McAvoy promoted to EVP/Marketing to manage the creative services, online and digital team headed by Marvin Dorson. She is responsible for all facets of the company’s brand and integrity for the networks. Susanne will continue to supervise all areas of marketing for the company including consumer, ad sales and affiliate sales marketing.
  • Michelle Vicary named to EVP/Programming to oversee all lifestyle and original programming, production, acquisitions and schedules for both networks. Additionally, the original production department headed by Barbara Fisher will merge under Michelle to create a single programming and production department.
  • Laura Lee was upped to SVP/Distribution to head a team that implements new and current distribution deals on behalf of both networks.
  • Ed Georger promoted to EVP/Advertising Sales and GM of Hallmark Movie Channel. Ed will head advertising sales and now manage the overall strategy for Hallmark Movie Channel working with all departments.


pigFACTORY Music
, an independent publishing and licensing company elevated Adam Wolf to VP/Creative, up from Senior Creative Director. In this new position, Adam will have oversight for all facets of marketing and licensing the company’s music for film, television, interactive and advertising. Adam will also seek out new songs and catalogs to join picFACTORY’S roster.

NBC Universal tapped Melissa Lavigne-Delville for the newly-created role as VP/Strategic Insights for Women at NBCU. Melissa will direct NBCU’s female-targeted ad sales, marketing and research division to find the key ways to communicate to women. Melissa will further be a resource and advisor on generational insights, cultural trends and societal shifts. She will report to Tony Cardinale, SVP/Strategic Insights, NBCU’s Women & Lifestyle Entertainment Networks.

Joshua Mintz appointed to SEVT/Telemundo Entertainment with Telemundo Communications Group, effective immediately. Joshua will oversee the full entertainment development and programming strategy for the Telemundo Network. He will report to Don Browne, President, Telemundo. Adriana Ibanez as EVP/Programming will continue in her role where she manages programming and scheduling strategy for the Telemundo network and international cable network. She will report to Joshua Mintz.

Former Miramax Films executive Michael Luisi takes on a new position at World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. as EVP/Business Affairs, General Counsel and Secretary, starting next Monday. Michael will become a key part of WWE’s senior management team heading business and legal affairs functions. Michael will report to Vince McMahon, Chairman/CEO, WWE.
