Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 5, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Herb Scannell, formerly President/Nickelodeon Networks Group and Vice-Chairman/MTV Networks, will serve as CEO, Next New Networks, a new consumer media company that will launch micro TV networks on the internet, each targeted to unique online communities with a range of both original and user-generated content.  Scannell co-founded the company with a partner group, which includes: Fred Seibert, founder of Frederator Studios, former President, Hanna Barbara and MTV’s original Creative Director; Emil Rensing, initial member of AOL Greenhouse and creator VOD Cars podcast; Jed Simmons, former COO, Sundance Group and Sr. Exec. for Excite and Turner Broadcasting; Tim Shey, co-founder Proteus and producer of interactive and mobile media.  Digital media venture capital firm Spark Capital has committed $8 million in funding for Next New Networks.

The BBC has ordered another season of Smile and picked up a new project from the production company Darrall Macqueen, an indie producer of kids/tween multi-platform programming.

  • The BBC has picked up a sixth season of Smile, the two and a half hour Sunday morning TV series that also has an online component.  Targeted to K6-11, Smile debuted on the BBC in 2001 and runs on CBBC and BBC2.
  • CBBC has optioned Bear Behaving Badly (26 x 20′), a mini-sitcom spin-off from Smile, which revolves around the cheeky hand puppet Neville the Blue Bear.  Each episodes follows Neville, an underdog who stumbles through the world of innocent mistakes and mishaps and thereby complicating his daily routine.  Aimed at K5-9, Bear Behaving Badly will be co-produced by CBBC and Southern Star.

BCI Eclipse and Hearst Entertainment will release King Features animated series Cool McCool on a three DVD set this March 13, 2007, under BCI’s Ink & Paint brand. The DVD set will feature 20 episodes of the series as well as interviews and episode introductions with longtime voice actor Chuck McCann.  Created by Bob Kane, best known as the creator of Batman, Cool McCool is an animated James Bond spoof, though with his trench coat McCool sort of foreshadowed Columbo albeit a groovier dresser than Columbo – but a more bumbling detective, which ran on NBC from 1966-1968.  A note of trivia here, almost simultaneously NBC ran the live-action spy spoof Get Smart as part of its primetime line-up from 1965-1969, the series then moved to CBS for the 1969-70 season.

The Wildflower Group has been tapped as the North American licensing agent for the Penguin Group’s Mad Libs brand.  You don’t have to be a (noun) at (location) to have spent (adjective) (length of time) doing Mad Libs with (plural noun) .  If you have never done one – you just haven’t lived, or been to summer camp.

As part of a licensing partnership between Mattel and adidas, will produce a new collection of apparel, accessories and footwear for the My Scene, brands.  While boy (Hot Wheels) and toddler (Fisher-Price) targeted products began rolling first in 2005 and more recently during fall 2006, this spring 2007 Mattel and adidas will reach for girls with the launch of My Scene Sporty Style dolls, which will all don adidas fashions each according to their individual sports/activity, such as skateboarding, tennis and yoga, as well as sports accessories, a purse and a water bottle.  Simultaneously coordinating adidas/My Scene branded girls apparel, accessories and shoes stemming from the new doll line will also be available.

National Geographic Kids magazine has partnered with Wendy’s restaurants for a national Kids’ Meal promotion to support content from the magazine.  The promotion will feature five toys based on as many topics, undersea adventures, bats, African safari, ancient Egypt and world masks.  All five topics will be covered in and a mini-magazine, also included with the meals.  Additionally, the promotion, which will run from the end of January through February 2007, will include a special NG Kids magazine subscription offer.  Wendy’s also will run one ad page in the February 2007 issue of National Geographic Kids.

John Lee has been appointed President, CDC Games.  Lee is charged with growing and expanding the company as the company plans to launch future online games in China and in other emerging markets. He also will head CDC Games’ previously announced Developer Franchise Program that has earmarked $20 million for developers of online games which will provide the company with exclusive distribution rights to their games. Under this program, Lee will initially focus on the markets of China, Korea, Japan and US.  He will report directly to Xiaowei Chen, Ph.D., CEO.  Most recently, Lee was Managing Director/Global Publishing, NCsoft, where among his responsibilities he coordinated publishing and new product launches in Asia Pacific.
