Good morning, it’s Friday, January 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The honeymoon appears to be over for media companies who have enjoyed looser restrictions distributing content online in China. As of Jan. 31 the Chinese government will be stepping up efforts to regulate the online video industry, according to postings on state run sites. Stringent new requirements will restrict online videos that: involve national secrets, hurt China’s reputation, effect social stability or promote p#rnography. China is no small market for internet video. It’s user base totals about 164 million according to comScore, second only the U.S. with 182 million.


hopes to attract some attention to its newly designed website by officially launching it at CES and broadcasting Monday night’s NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams live from the show floor. The first telecast begins at 3:30 PT on Jan. 7.
Music fans will get to vote again on their favorite unsigned musicians as part of the “My Grammy Moment” segment of the Grammy Awards. This year up to 20 semi-finalists will be flown out to LA to rehearse with the Foo Fighters. Users can submit, view and vote on performances via YouTube or view entries from various CBS Audience Network partners. The 50th Annual Grammy Awards will broadcast live on Sunday Feb. 10, 2008 on CBS.

Fox will debut the pilot of Warner Bros. Television’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Yahoo! TV beginning tonight at 9 pm ET/Midnight PT. Online video search engine catalogued its 100 millionth video in 2007, a 20-fold increase from the 5 million videos it began with at the beginning of the year. The company is predicting it will have 1 billion videos indexed by 2009.


Privately-owned Landmark Communications is putting The Weather Channel and up for sale according to reports. Investment banks JP Morgan and Lehman Brothers have been retained to handle the sale, confirmed The Virginia-Pilot. ranks as a top 20 media site in terms of unique visitors and has content deals in place with several major portals.
Verizon’s FiOS was named by Consumer Reports as the nation’s top triple play internet, television and phone service.


The desire to stamp out online piracy has put the new breed of user generated video sharing sites at risk, according to a new study from American University’s Center for Social Media. The study identifies 9 common re-appropriation practices that should be allowed under current fair use laws including satire, parody, criticism and collages (remixes and mashups.)

USA Network‘s Chris McCumber was upped to EVP/Marketing, Digital and Brand Strategy, reporting directly to Bonnie Hammer, President of USA Network and Sci Fi Channel. Chris’ responsibilities include consumer marketing, media planning, on and off-air creative advertising and interstitial programming, as well as all digital efforts.



With Mike Huckabee reportedly winning for the Republicans in Iowa, digital pundits will be wondering if it was that “Chuck Norris Approved” video that put him over the top. Playing upon Chuck’s online cult status that attributes supernatural powers to him via thousands of “Chuck Norris Facts”, the ad humanizes the former Arkansas governor better than most attempts at playing to the YouTube crowd. Check out for a list of the most popular “facts.” And while we’re at it, let’s give Obama Girl her due.
