Cynopsis: DIGITAL

01/29/10

Good morning, it’s Friday, January 29, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Flush with cash after activating another 3.1 million iPhone customers during Q4, who spend anywhere from $30-$45 each on data plans, AT&T pledged to address lingering issues with its 3G network. (If the iPad takes off, they’re going need all the added capacity they can get.) Wednesday’s Apple iPad unveiling did not announce an end to Apple and AT&T’s exclusive relationship regarding the iPhone; rather Apple COO Tim Cook defended the telco, saying most customers have a “great experience” in most locations. Meanwhile, AT&T added 248k new U-verse TV customers during the quarter, bringing its total IPTV footprint to 2.1 million homes.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Social networking platforms and digital devices like the iPhone are TV’s last hope of remaining relevant with audiences, Shine Group CEO Elisabeth Murdoch told audiences at NATPE Wed. during her keynote address. according to B&C. She also advised producers to be wary of piracy but to not let loss of control discourage participation.

NATPE also gave out its inaugural Digital Luminary Awards this week in the following categories. Congratulation to:

  • Omneon –  Broadcast Technology
  • Xbox Live - New Media
  • The Guild – Original Web Content
  • Android – Mobile
  • Hearst Television Inc. – Leadership

Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific
launched a pair of new channels in India. Discovery Science and Discovery Turbo will initially air on the Tata Sky DTH platform, but will soon be available on both analog and digital platforms across the country.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Netflix reported that profit rose 36% and revenue increased 24% during Q4 as the company ended the quarter with 12.3 million subscribers – up 10% from the third quarter and 31% from a year earlier. The percentage of subscribers who watched more than 15 minutes of a TV episode or movie “instantly” during the quarter was 48%, compared to 28% for the same period of 2008 and 41% for the third quarter of 2009. Netflix has announced more than 40 streaming media integrations with consumer electronics manufacturers.

Streaming media device maker Roku has passed the 500,000 mark in units sold, is planning to raise an additional $30 million privately and is mulling over an IPO for next year, per Bloomberg.
CEO Anthony Wood said he expects the company’s revenue to double to $75 million this year.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In a rare attack of the high court, President Obama criticized the Supreme Court‘s decision during his State of the Union address to remove limits allowing corporations to invest directly in radio, TV and internet campaigns in direct support of federal candidates. He called on Congress to pass new legislation to counteract the ruling, limiting the influence of special interests.

Mobile video delivery platform Transpera announced the ability to deliver video advertising and video content to Apple’s new iPad device. As with the smartphone platforms it supports, Transpera will enable marketers to deliver and track pre-roll and post-roll video units, as well as clickable interactive video ad units.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Brisk sales of Windows 7 helped Microsoft post big increases in net income in revenue yesterday after a dismal Q3. The company reported revenue of $19 billion, up 14% from a year ago as net income jumped 60% to $6.7 billion. The company’s Entertainment and Devices division didn’t fare as well, with sales down 11%. The division’s 5.4 million Xbox console sales were down 14%, but Xbox Live memberships were up to 23 million – a 35% jump from a year ago.

Objections are being raised to the modified Google Books agreement with the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers drawn up to assuage concerns that Google will maintain too much control over digital publishing. Amazon and consumer groups such as Consumer Watchdog raised many of the same objections it had with the first agreement – namely that the revised agreement would improperly destroy potentially millions of absent authors’ exclusive copyrights and would give Google an unfair monopoly.

That didn’t take long. The day after Apple launched the iPad, Japanese electronics manufacturer Fujitsu has stepped forward claiming ownership of the iPad trademark, per the NYTimes. The company launched an expensive multifunction computing device of the same name in 2003 used by shop clerks to verify prices and check inventory.

Online video platform provider Ooyala launched a Japanese version of its services with help of local partner NTT Smartconnect. Ooyala will provide hosting, analytics, syndication and ad serving features for customers on its white-label video distribution platform. The software will automatically detect browser language settings and adjust the player controls and closed captioning accordingly.

Digital encoding specialist Inception Media Group announced it will acquire Trinidad Media Services, Inc., a digital distribution service provider to film studios, television networks, video distributors and independent content owners. Trinidad media also provides digital encoding, electronic packaging and high-speed content delivery services.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The global average broadband connection speed once again increased during Q3 of 2009, after an unusual drop during the previous quarter, according to Akami‘s latest State of the Internet report. South Korea, boasting an average 14.6 Mbps connection, maintained its position as the country with the highest average connection speed, joined by Ireland as one of two countries in the top 10 posting quarterly gains of greater than 25%. Romania, Sweden, and the Czech Republic all saw quarterly declines in their average connection speeds, while the United States saw a small quarterly gain in average connection speeds, increasing to 3.9 Mbps. However U.S. speeds actually fell on the year. The U.S. ranked 18th in terms of broadband connection speeds, dropping 2.4% on the year.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

In all the hoopla over the upcoming Apple iPad, we thought it might be useful to remind folks two essential things the device doesn’t do. (Keep in mind Steve Jobs is a master at giving early adopters a reason to buy the 2nd generation.)

  • Like the iPhone, the iPad doesn’t support Flash, the defacto standard for video on the web. This will put the impetus on content providers to develop native apps to deliver video to the device
  • There’s no video camera, which means the iPad won’t support video conferencing and all these cool two-way video broadcasting apps being developed for the iPhone 3GS

iCall
, a free voice-over-IP phone service that works effectively on PCs and Apple’s iPhone via WiFi, has finally been given access by Apple to be used in conjunction with 3G networks such AT&T’s in the U.S. Users will now be able to make toll free calls in the United States and Canada via their iPhone and iPod device over 3G networks.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The cable industry’s joint interactive advertising effort Canoe Ventures named John Redpath as SVP and General Counsel, the latter role a post he once held with HBO.

Former National Geographic ad sales research director Lauren Lanzi is joining media buying analytics firm LogicLab as Account Management Director. She will develop and oversee the company’s client relationships with advertisers, agencies and media buyers.

The Direct Marketing Association announced that Tammy Cota has been named Executive Director of the Internet Alliance , the internet, e-commerce and technology advocacy group. Tammy had served as interim director since July of 2009, when former executive director Emily Hackett retired.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

In today’s multiplatform world it helps to combine mediums for maximum impact. Universal Orlando Resort turned to Gannett’s daily print paper The USA Today yesterday to distribute a map of the new “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” attraction, a map designed to hold up to the webcam on your computer. Go to UniversalOrlando.com/HarryPotter to launch a Shockwave-based application that works in conjunction with the camera. The technology blends computer images and real-life environments to provide a 3D tour of the 20-acre park from multiple angles. Holding the map closer to the webcam activates a close-up view of the magical town of “Hogsmeade” and the Hogwarts Express. Banners on the map flap in the breeze if the microphone is blown into. The Hog’s Head can be seen puffing its jowls at visitors who visit the Hog’s Head pub. Cool idea – but there should be a way to receive and print the map online for maximum exposure.
