Investigation Discovery (ID) unveils a new six-episode series, Nothing Personal documenting contract killings by professional murderers and the victims who never saw it coming. The one-hour series opens March 9 at 10p and is hosted by true-crime expert Steve Schirripa who starred on HBO’s The Sopranos. Nothing Personal is produced by Cineflix (NP) Inc. for ID.
More networks are gearing up for Britain’s Royal Wedding on April 29 with specials and documentaries:
- BBC America, “the home of the Royal Wedding” tapped Cat Deeley to host and produce Royally Mad, an original two-part special prior to the Royal Wedding. Part one airs April 12 at 10p with part two a week later on April 19 at 10p.
- Next month, Ovation will air the US premiere of William and Kate: A Modern Romance on February 9 at 830p. The documentary is one component of the network’s week-long programming stunt called The Royals which will include: Icons: Diana on February 9 at 8p; Princess Diana: Her Life in Jewels on February 12 at 9p; and Diana Everlasting on February 12 at 10p. Also this week, Ovation will air the US premiere of Royal Opulence, a documentary commenting on the style and decadent lives of royal families on February 10 at 8p followed by a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of The King’s Speech at 830p and the film Bertie and Elizabeth at 9p.
- Wedding Central will launch its first original project, a one-hour special William & Kate: The Wedding of the Century. Co-produced with UK independent company, Twofour Broadcast and co-funded and distributed globally by DRG, the special will debut as part of the network’s week-long celebration of the royal wedding the week prior to the event.
- Lifetime has a movie in the works about how Prince William fell in love with Kate, the beautiful commoner. The movie, slated to air prior to the Royal Wedding, will deal with William and Kate’s friendship which developed into the romantic love affair, the engagement and the anticipated Royal Wedding. Nico Evers-Swindell (NCIS: Los Angeles) will play Prince William and Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire) will play Prince Charles. Production begins next month.
Starting next week, a new season of AARP’s My Generation premieres on more than 250 public television stations nationwide, including affiliates in 18 of the top 20 markets. Hosted by Leeza Gibbons, My Generation focuses on staying fit, money and fun with guest stars throughout the season such as Olivia Newton John, Dennis Quaid, Jimmy Smits, Rob Reiner, Valerie Bertinelli and Martina Navratilova. Magna Global revised its DVR homes penetration estimate in a new report that says at least 50% of all US TV homes, or approximately 61.8 million households, will have a DVR by the end of 2016. At the end of third quarter 2010, the number of TV homes with DVRs was at 37.9 million or 32%. Magna Global also predicts homes with VOD will reach 70.1 million or around 57% by the end of 2016. This is up from 51.1 million homes or nearly 44% with VOD at the end of third quarter 2010.
IFC introduced two new series last Friday starting with Onion News Network at 10p which drew a combined total viewership of 780,000 for its series premiere episode and encore airings on Friday and Sunday nights. Following at 1030p on Friday, IFC launched Portlandia that tallied 725,000 combined total viewers for its premiere and repeat airings on Friday and Sunday nights.
This Wednesday, Discovery Channel debuted the new original series Sons of Guns at 9p drawing in 1.49 million total viewers followed by the 930p premiere episode which increased to 1.69 million total viewers. On the same night, original series Desert Car Kings launched at 10p and delivered a 0.64 rating among A25-54.
Also on Wednesday, Syfy premiered its new reality competition series Face Off at 10p attracting 1.4 million total viewers as well as 896,000 A18-49 viewers. This debut episode marks the best premiere night for a new reality show for Syfy in the A18-49 demo since the original Ghost Hunters launched in October 2004.
Time Warner Cable is providing its Digital customers a chance to view this year’s Academy Award nominated films via its Movies On Demand service under the Awards Season category. The Awards Season category will be available through mid-March and includes the titles Inception, The Kids Are Alright, Toy Story 3, Winter’s Bone, How To Train Your Dragon, Exit Through the Gift Shop, The Town and The Social Network will be available starting February 2.
Cablevision Systems Corp. added FOX Soccer Channel and FOX Soccer Plus to its free hi-def roster of networks.
Syfy cast Luke Pasqualino (Skins UK) and Ben Cotton (Hellcats, Riese) for its Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome two-hour pilot. The series depicts the tenth year of the first Cylon war, the battle between humans and a sentient robot race. Pasqualino will portray the young fighter pilot, William Adama who joins the newest Battlestar in the Colonial fleet, the Galactica. Cotton plays Adama’s battle-weary superior officer. Universal Cable Productions is producing.
Will Ferrell is joining NBC’s The Office this season for a four-episode arc, playing a branch manager who comes from the home office who is just as incompetent as Michael Scott.
Page Productions and Sloane Cooper Development are partnering on the development and production of non-fiction programming. Page Productions is behind such shows as Food Networks’ Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, Outrageous Food and Tailgate Warriors and is currently in production on a pilot for Spike TV. SCD’s productions include A&E’s crime series Bloodwork, a dream house series for DIY Network and various projects for Discovery Channel, National Geographic and TLC.
Investigation Discovery gave an order to New Wave Entertainment for Cleaning Up, a three-episode docu-series about Neal Smither and his wife Lindy and their company Crime Scene Cleaners. Matt Ogens developed the concept and he will serve as executive producer with New Wave’s Barry Katz and Brian Volk-Weiss.
Casting Call: Vinnie Potestivo Entertainment and a major cable network are casting for men and women who consider themselves America’s most obsessed Royal Wedding fans; people who are outgoing and passionate about the UK and all things about William and Kate. Finalists will be flown to London to experience British culture and a tour of Royal locales with a well-known celebrity host. Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX claimed the top spot Wednesday night among A18-49 with a 9.2/24, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. American Idol on FOX had a giant lead at 8p with an 8.6/23 while back-to-back The Middle reruns on ABC averaged a distant #2 at 2.0/5. FOX’s American Idol surged to a 9.8/25 during 9p followed by CBS’ Criminal Minds at 3.2/8. CBS won at 10p with Blue Bloods at 2.1/6 with ABC’s Off the Map at #2 at 1.8/5.

ITV Studios Global Entertainment named Jean-Philippe Randisi to the newly-minted position of EVP/Director of Consumer Products. Jean-Philippe’s scope includes heading the unit’s full consumer products strategy where he reports to Maria Kyriacou, Managing Director, ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
Pioneer Productions and Mentorn Media, operating as sister companies, hired Nicholas Oakley as Executive Producer/US Development. Nicholas is charged with developing new series and adapting formats for US networks. He will be based in Los Angeles. In addition, Pioneer Productions added Tiffany Orvet as Development Producer for the US. She will work closely with Nicholas Oakley based in San Francisco.
Jamia Bigalow elevated to SVP/Affiliate Marketing for Fox Networks where she will be involved with affiliate sales with responsibility to increase brand awareness for Fox’s roster of networks. Jamia will report to Mike Hopkins, President, Fox Networks Affiliate Sales and Marketing.
Discovery Communications slotted two executives into new senior communications roles:
- Elizabeth Hillman promoted to SVP/International Communications to supervise all facets of Discovery’s global communications and public relations for the company’s 140 worldwide networks and business operations spanning 180 markets. Most recently, Elizabeth served as SVP/Communications for Discovery Channel. Yeah Elizabeth!!
- Laurie Goldberg bumped to the newly-created role as EVP/Public Relations for Discovery Channel and TLC. Laurie was previously SVP/TLC Communications. Congrats Laurie!
Engel Entertainment (EE) added Marcia Mule as Head/Programming to manage the company’s series and to work in tandem with EE’s development group. Prior to this appointment, Marcia was VP/Head of Programming at True Entertainment, an Endemol company.
