~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ABC News President Ben Sherwood addressed news yesterday about the network’s late-night offerings Nightline and Jimmy Kimmel Live.  Sherwood said Nightline will remain on the network’s schedule, though be trimmed back to a 25-minute program airing at 1135p.  Beginning February 4, ABC is moving the start time of Jimmy Kimmel Live to midnight, a promise made to host Jimmy Kimmel in 2010 said Sherwood.  Furthermore, Sherwood related he is working with ABC Entertainment’s Paul Lee to incorporate 13 hours produced by Nightline into primetime hours during 2011.

Late yesterday, Angela Bromstad, President/Primetime Entertainment at NBC and Universal Media Studios announced to staffers she is leaving her post.  The news of Bromstad’s departure comes soon after the FCC and the Justice Department approved the joint venture between Comcast and NBC Universal. 

G4 premieres JUMP CITY: SEATTLE, the first Parkour championship competition series beginning February 15 at 8p.  The series, using Seattle’s urban landscape as its backdrop, will follow two out of four featured teams per episode as they run, climb, vault, leap and more throughout the competition.  JUMP CITY: SEATTLE is produced by FremantleMedia North America in association with Motion, Inc.

GSN (Game Show Network) tapped TV personality/radio star and author Wendy Williams to host its new original strip series, Love Triangle opening April 18.  The 32-episode talk show/game show format hones in on a dater in the midst of a real-life love triangle and Williams will help that person navigate through the relationships.  Love Triangle is produced by 3 Ball Productions.

On January 28, here! TV is launching a new talk show, Just Josh featuring a familiar face to fans of the network.  Josh Rosenzweig who hosted more than 200 episodes of here! With Josh and Sara will helm the new talk show filmed on location in New York City. The show will air on here! TV and also on here! TeleFutura Network revealed a new afternoon schedule starting next Monday at 4p under the umbrella, Las Nuevas Tardes de TeleFutura (TeleFutura’s New Afternoon Line-up):

  • Veredicto Final features real-life Judge Cristina Pereyra as she presides over a new season with more exciting court cases.  Airs at 4p.
  • Manana Es Para Siempre is a passionate novella about innocent love thwarted by impossible odds.  Airs at 5p.
  • La Tijera features host Tanya Charry and entertainment commentator Carolina Sandoval along with Rodolfo Jimenez, Raul Garcia and Anabelle Blum as they serve up the latest entertainment news and gossip. Airs at 6p.

NYC Media, the official network of the City of New York, debuts a new six-episode reality series Doggie Moms on February 16 at 930p on NYC life, NYC Media’s top station.  The show, created by Next Millennium Productions, will showcase a group of New York City women whose lives center on their pooches.

NATPE 2011 News

Telemundo Communications Group is bringing the epic original novela, La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South) to this year’s NATPE conference.  La Reina del Sur, shot on location in Spain, Mexico and Colombia is based on the novel by author Arturo Perez-Reverte.  Telemundo International will also represent other original novelas at NATPE including Aurora, and Los Herederos del Monte and other properties including Amar de Nuevo and 40 y Tantos.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

TUFF TV is launching in the New York City market and surrounding areas on its affiliate WKOB digital channel 42.4.  TUFF TV is a digital broadcast network programming first-run content covering sports, lifestyle, drama, reality, talk, specials and movies aiming at M18-54.  TUFF TV is already airing in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle and Charlotte and has a goal to reach nearly 45 million US TV households during first quarter 2011.  TUFF TV is a joint venture of Luken Communications, LLC and TUFF Media Group, LLC.

Cuba Play Television will program never-before-seen content from Cuba to US Hispanic audiences, reports Multichannel News.  Cuba Play Television is being offered via satellite distributor Olympusat based in West Palm Beach, FL with 12 hours of new, original content per day.  Content on the new channel will be edited and hand-picked by a group of network editors who are charged with scrubbing the content of any political messages.  Initially, Cuba Play Television is aiming at the US Cuban population that totals an estimated 1.5 million people, though the channel will also extend to other US Hispanics and beyond.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC is moving forward on a new action/adventure reality series from Jerry Bruckheimer titled Take the Money and Run.  The competition series will likely open April 14 and air over six weeks, replacing Wipeout once it concludes its winter run. 

ABC additionally approved a comedy pilot from writer Jack Burditt and 20th Century Fox Television about a guy who attempts to remain macho in a world dominated by women.  Burditt will executive produce with Shawn Levy and Marty Adelstein who both recently established a production company under 20th Century Fox TV. 

NBC gave a pilot order to Ron Moore (Battlestar Galactica) for a supernatural cop drama, Precinct 17.  Sony Pictures Television is behind the ensemble drama described as a supernatural version of Hill Street Blues.  Moore will serve as writer and executive producer. 

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is working closely with Rosie O’Donnell on the network’s OWN Documentary Film Club.  O’Donnell will take part in selecting films to air and further will host specials following on-air premieres of specific films.  O’Donnell begins her duties by hosting a one-hour special on OWN following the world television premiere of Becoming Chaz this May, which is also the first documentary film to air as part of the OWN Documentary Film Club.

Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis:  CBS held relatively steady Tuesday night from the previous week with a 3.2/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ NCIS won with 4.1/12 followed by the weekly installment of The Biggest Loser on NBC at 2.7/8. CBS stayed at #1 during 9p with NCIS: Los Angeles at 3.3/9 with NBC’s The Biggest Loser a close contender at 3.1/8. Then at 10p, CBS’ The Good Wife and NBC’s Parenthood tied for first place at 2.1/6 each with ABC and a 20/20 Special Edition next at 1.3/4.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX climbed to #1 Wednesday night with a 9.7/26 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  The tenth season debut of American Idol on FOX crushed the competition at 8p with a 9.1/26 with ABC’s comedies The Middle and Better With You averaging a distant second place at 2.3/7.  At 9p, FOX’s premiere of American Idol surged higher to a 10.3/26 with ABC claiming #2 again with more sitcoms, Modern Family and Cougar Town averaging a 3.5/9.  FOX’s American Idol overall attracted 26.1 million total viewers for its two-hour premiere which is a decrease of -13% compared to the show’s 2010 Tuesday debut with 29.9 million total viewers.  NBC won the 10p hour with Law & Order: SVU at 2.3/7 followed by ABC’s Off the Map at 2.1/6 and CBS’ Blue Bloods at 2.0/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

MGM’s President Jim Packer is making a move to Lionsgate as President/Worldwide Television Distribution and Digital.  In his new position, Jim will concentrate on selling Lionsgate’s television programming that includes such hits as AMC’s Mad Men and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie and Weeds.  Jim has been Co-President/Worldwide Television at MGM since 2006 and he joined that company in 2001.   Congratulations Jim!

BBC News named Brian Gottlieb as its Senior White House Producer for BBC News.   Brian will become BBC’s lead producer on coverage emanating from the White House and will also serve as the main contact between BBC News and President Obama’s administration and other officials in Washington, D.C.  He will also work in tandem with BBC North America Editor Mark Mardell and BBC Washington-based correspondents to produce reports for the BBC’s top UK outlets and BBC’s worldwide news services in addition to having his news segments included on BBC North American news services, BBC World News America, BBC World News segments on PBS and the US Edition of BBC.com.

Jeanne Meyer hired for the newly-created position as EVP/Corporate Communications with Current Media.  Jeanne will be part of Current TV’s executive team to spearhead internal and external communications strategies for the company.  She will report to Mark Rosenthal, CEO while based at the company’s New York office.

J.P. Shields tapped as Director/Communications and Publicity at The Hub, the recently re-branded cable TV network for kids and their families.  J.P. will be in charge of developing and executing program publicity efforts and social media initiatives while reporting to Mark J. Kern, SVP/Communications.
