The two-hour 11th season premiere of American Idol on Wednesday scored a win for FOX that night with a 7.2 rating among A18-49 though the season opener was down -27% in the demo compared to the 10th season premiere from a year ago. The season premiere also averaged 21.6 million viewers which represented a -17% decline from its previous debut on January 19, 2011.
Next Tuesday, SCIENCE brings back a second season of Monster Bug Wars beginning at 10p. The new season has six episodes featuring dramatic footage offering an inside look at the world of insects. This season also utilizes insect experts Dr. Linda Rayor and Dr. Bryan Grieg Fry offering commentary on the mating, hunting and survival instincts of these tiny predators.
Two syndicated court shows, Divorce Court and Judge Alex distributed by Twentieth Television, Inc. have been renewed through the 2013-14 season. In the next season, both programs are cleared in 75% of the US including on the Fox Television Stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas. The programs are additionally renewed on the Tribune, Sinclair, CBS, Local TV, Belo and Newport-owned stations. Judge Alex and Divorce Court are produced by Monet Lane Productions.
Rights management company Target Entertainment sold Channel 5’s reality series Tamara Ecclestone: Billion $$ Girl (6 eps/30 min) to international broadcasters including ProSiebenSat.1Group in Germany; E! Italy; VMMA Belgium; TV2 Norway; MTV3 Finland; XYZnetworks Australia for Lifestyle YOU; TVNZ New Zealand; and Kanal 11 Estonia. The series follows socialite Tamara Ecclestone as she traverses social engagements, business deals and being part of a celebrity family. Twofour Broadcast produces the series.
Making the announcement yesterday, GSN (Game Show Network) made a long-term extension of its affiliation deal with AT&T U-verse TV.
The CW is moving forward with The Carrie Diaries ordering a pilot based on Candace Bushnell’s novel about a young Carrie Bradshaw coming of age in the 1980s. Amy Harris, who worked on HBO’s original Sex and the City series, wrote the new pilot script. Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, Len Goldstein and Candace Bushnell serve as executive producers. The CW also ordered a new version of Beauty and the Beast to pilot loosely based on the 1987 CBS series and described as a contemporary romantic story with a procedural angle. Jennifer Levin (Felicity) and Sherri Cooper (Brothers and Sisters) are writers. Executive producers on board include Paul J. Witt, C. Anthony Thomas, Ron Koslow and Bill Haber.
An untitled comedy pilot from Nick Stroller was picked up by CBS. From 20th Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment, the project, set inside an advertising agency, is about a guy who has to work near the woman who broke his heart. Stroller will direct the pilot and be an executive producer along with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope.
CBS further ordered a law enforcement drama pilot from Aron Eli Coleite and Jerry Bruckheimer titled Trooper. The drama is produced by Warner Bros. Television and centers on a down-to-earth mother-turned New York state trooper. Coleite will write and serve as executive producer with Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman; Kristieanne Reed is the co-executive producer. This project is the most recent production emanating from Bruckheimer Television to be picked up by CBS which also has CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and The Amazing Race.
Entertainment Studios placed orders for two first-run sitcoms, The First Family and Mr. Box Office, giving each show 104 episodes. Entertainment Studios will produce and distribute the comedies via broadcast syndication, cable and digital media. The First Family is about an African-American family in the White House and Mr. Box Office is about a movie star who must do community service teaching English at the toughest high school in America. Production will commence on both sitcoms this summer.
BBC One commissioned 158 new episodes comprising two new seasons of the quiz show Pointless from Remarkable Television, an Endemol company. The game show is hosted by Alexander Armstrong with assistant Richard Osman.
For the fifth season of HBO’s True Blood, an actor from the Twilight Saga movies and AMC’s Hell on Wheels, Christopher Heyerdahl is joining in the recurring role as Dieter Braun. Heyerdahl’s character is an ancient and powerful vampire who plays a major role in the intelligence of the Authority

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX topped the pack Tuesday with a 3.0/8 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX hit the right note at 8p with Glee at 3.1/8 while double Last Man Standing episodes on ABC averaged a #2 at 2.3/6. New episodes of New Girl and Raising Hope averaged a 2.9/8, winning the hour for FOX followed by NBC’s The Biggest Loser at 2.4/6. Also this hour, The CW debuted new series Remodeled at 0.3/1. The networks all hovered near #1 during 10p though NBC’s Parenthood prevailed at 1.7/5 with ABC’s Body of Proof next at 1.6/4 and CBS’ Unforgettable repeat in third at 1.5/4.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX shined in first place Wednesday with a 7.4/19 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, the 11th season of American Idol opened on FOX at 8p with a 7.1/19 and ABC’s sitcoms The Middle and Suburgatory averaged a second placed showing at 2.5/7. American Idol’s second half of its two-hour premiere hit #1 for FOX during 9p at 7.7/19 and ABC stayed firmly in second place with Modern Family and Happy Endings at an average of 4.0/10. CBS made it to the front of the line at 10p with CSI at 2.8/7 and ABC’s Revenge followed at 2.5/7.
