CBS approved second seasons of two frosh series, NCIS: Los Angeles and The Good Wife for the 2010-2011 broadcast season. NCIS: Los Angeles is the top new program of the current season with an average audience of 16.8 million viewers with average ratings at 5.3/12 for A25-54 and 3.8/10 among A18-49. The Good Wife is a consistent winner in its Tuesday at 10p time period. Both series are produced by CBS Television Studios.

NBC put forth is new post-Olympics primetime schedule launching on March 1 as well as replacements for The Jay Leno Show in the 10p Monday-Friday slot:

  • Mondays: Chuck at 8p; Trauma (beginning March 8) at 9p; Law & Order at 10p
  • Tuesdays: The Biggest Loser at 8p; Parenthood (premieres March 2) at 10p
  • Wednesdays: Mercy at 8p; Law & Order: SVU (encores beginning March 3) at 9p; Law & Order: SVU (originals beginning March 3) at 10p
  • Thursdays: Community at 8p; Parks and Recreation at 830p; The Office at 9p; 30 Rock at 930p; The Marriage Ref (premieres March 4/sneak preview February 28) at 10p

TNT renewed its new drama series Men of a Certain Age starring Ray Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula. TNT gave the series a 10-episode second season from TNT Original Productions.

Discovery Communications released all of its network updates from its TCA Winter Press Tour presentation yesterday in Los Angeles.

Discovery Channel:

  • Life – The epic series, documenting the earth’s living things and narrated by Oprah Winfrey, is set to air on Sundays starting March 21 through April 18 with two episodes at 8p. Additionally, The Making of Life will air April 18 at 10p. Life is a co-production of BBC and Discovery Channel.
  • Worst Case Scenario – Six-part series has survival expert Bear Grylls putting himself in life-threatening situations to show viewers how to escape and survive if a “worst case scenario” arises. Series set to launch this spring and produced by Pilgrim Films & Television.

TLC:

  • Addicted – New docu-series will chronicle the disease of addiction and how it affects the addict and their loved ones. Six episodes produced by Asylum Entertainment set to premiere in March.

Animal Planet:

  • Last Chance Highway – New series follows Shelly Bookwalter and Kyle Peterson as they fight to save unwanted dogs from being euthanized. Eight-episode series from Al Roker Entertainment will debut this summer.
  • Animal Planet also announced it renewed the series Pit Bulls and Parolees for a second season set to start production next month. Produced by Rive Gauche Television and 44 Blue Productions, Pit Bulls and Parolees will roll out season two this fall.
  • Additionally, a new seven-episode season of River Monsters will premiere April 18 at 10p. Icon Films produces for Animal Planet.

Investigation Discovery (ID):

  • Prison Wives – Previously announced new docu-series tells the stories of women and men whose spouse is in prison. Thirteen episodes produced by Sirens Media will debut February 14 at 8p. Prison Wives will move to its regular time period of Wednesdays at 10p starting February 17.

Science Channel:

  • Rebuilding Ground Zero (wt) – From Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Television and KPI Productions, this docu-series will chronicle the historic rebuilding of the World Trade Center site in New York City. The six-part series will premiere in 2011 with Spielberg serving as executive producer and creative advisor.

Planet Green:

  • The Fabulous Beekman Boys – Previously announced new docu-series about a couple who leave the city behind to start a new life on a farm in upstate New York while launching an organic lifestyle brand. Premieres June 16 at 9p and produced by World of Wonder.
  • Future Food – Another previously announced new original series will premiere March 30 at 10p. Eight episodes produced by Galafilm in association with 2C Media and ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

Planet Green also announced a couple of series in development:

  • Yes Men, The Television Show – Series spoofs reality and current affairs as Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonnano portray corporate and government officials from countries around the world. Produced by Renegade Pictures.
  • Treehugger TV – Based on the website Treehugger.com, a humorous and irreverent series focused on global topics.
  • Furthermore, Planet Green will begin programming over a 24-hour cycle starting March 29. The network also launches a new primetime programming block called Verge housing a number of series. The inaugural week of Verge will launch new series Future Food on March 30 at 10p and Wa$ted on March 31 at 8p.

TV Guide Network opens full-length episodes of HBO’s series Curb Your Enthusiasm on March 10 at 10p. TV Guide Network will retain the show’s original length only editing episodes for language and nudity. Curb Your Enthusiasm, created by and starring Larry David, recently completed its seventh season on HBO spotlighting a reunion of Seinfeld cast members in the finale episode.

BET brings back a sophomore season of Tiny & Toya, beginning April 13 at 10p. Throughout the new season, the series follows Tameka “Tiny” Cottle and her best friend Antonia “Toya” Carter as the pair continues to juggle motherhood, family and fame while each oversees a successful business. James DuBose executive produces with DuBose Entertainment along with BET Networks; Tiny co-executive produces for 1 Lucky Girl Entertainment and Toya co-executive produces for Visual Beauty Inc.

VH1 Classic has one new original series on the docket during first quarter and the return of two others:

  • The Music Video Exposed – New half-hour weekly series reveals the stories and truth behind some of the most memorable music videos of the 1980s. Six-week series premieres January 22 at 8p.
  • Behind the Music Remastered – Series returns with eight new 30m episodes featuring the top classic rock groups and artists such as Genesis, Metallica, Def Leppard and John Lennon, picking up where the original series Behind the Music ends. Premieres February 6 at 10p.
  • That Metal Show – Season four features more top metal guests such as Joey Kramer of Aerosmith and Scott Ian of Anthrax and popular studio segments. Premieres February 6 at 11p.

Investigation Discovery (ID) premiered two new series recently with the first being Disappeared from NBC’s Peacock Productions on Monday which delivered 187,000 W18-49 viewers. Then on Tuesday, ID debuted I (Almost) Got Away With It from Indigo Films which tallied 516,000 total viewers and 191,000 W25-54 viewers.

A joint partnership with the Ad Council and the Red Cross quickly taped broadcast PSAs featuring First Lady Michelle Obama appealing for relief to help earthquake-torn Haiti, reports Multichannel News. To date all major cable and broadcast networks as well as the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and the National Association of Broadcasters are on board to air the 30-second TV and radio PSAs. The PSAs were distributed as early as yesterday to MSOs, networks and stations in addition to being posted on YouTube.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

VH1 Classic is working with Mark Burnett Productions on a new four-part, one-hour original series Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp, scheduled to premiere this coming July. Fifteen musicians will have the chance to become rock stars through a four-week training process with the help of rock n’ roll counselors. Production will begin on the series next month.

Erica Hill is joining CBS News and The Early Show full time. Hill was tapped as Newsreader for CBS News’ The Early Show, effective immediately. Prior to this appointment, Hill was the news anchor and correspondent for CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 from 2005-2010 among other anchor duties for CNN in addition to being the co-anchor of the Saturday edition of The Early Show. Hill will continue as co-anchor of Saturday’s The Early Show in addition to contributing to other CBS News broadcasts and platforms.

The Style Network takes on tacky, decor-challenged rooms in a new intervention-style series called Tacky House hosted by designer Thom Filicia. Tacky House is set to debut this spring and in each episode, Thom and his expert sidekicks will makeover rooms transforming them from tacky to tasteful. Lynchpin Productions produces for The Style Network.

Food Network announced production is starting this month on the new series Private Chefs of Beverly Hills. Produced by Target Entertainment, the series will launch in April with six episodes following chefs working for Big City Chefs, the private chef placement agency based in Beverly Hills. Viewers will watch as these talented chefs are hired by extravagant, eclectic clients in some of L.A.’s wealthiest neighborhoods.

TV Land hired TV personality/entrepreneur/model Brooke Burke as host for the third season of its original competition series She’s Got The Look. The new season begins production in L.A. next week, aiming to discover the next 35+ woman who has the looks, sophistication and confidence to make it in the modeling world. Additionally, TV reporter/model Roshumba Williams joins the show as a judge along with celebrity stylist Robert Verdi and Wilhelmina president Sean Patterson. Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan executive produce under their new company Fly On The Wall Entertainment.

~ RATINGS ~

Wednesday  A18-49 Analysis: FOX hit the right groove Wednesday night, doing best among A18-49 with 8.5/23, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX came on strong at 8p as American Idol opened primetime at 9.4/26, while ABC’s sitcoms a Modern Family repeat and The Middle and CBS’ comedies Old Christine and Gary Unmarried each averaged a 1.8/5 to tie for second place. FOX remained in the lead through 9p with a combo of American Idol and an encore of The Simpsons averaging a 7.5/19 followed by CBS’ Criminal Minds at 3.8/10. CBS made it to the top at 10p with usual time slot winner CSI: NY at 3.5/10 with ABC’s Ugly Betty next at 1.6/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc. (JEGI), a New York-based investment bank working with the media, information and marketing services companies, promoted Scott Peters and Tolman Geffs as Co-Presidents. Scott joins JEGI in 1997 and was upped to Managing Director in 1999. Tolman began with JEGI in 2004.

Bill Boland advanced to Senior Producer/Production with the YES Network, giving him the opportunity to become the lead producer for the network’s New York Yankees telecasts. Bill joined the network in November 2001 just prior to the network’s launch in March 2002. Bill will now report to John Filippelli, President/Production and Programming.

Comedy Central appointed Kent Alterman as Head/Original Programming and Production where he will be in charge of the development and daily operations of all original programming for the network. Additionally, Kent will manage the development teams in Los Angeles and New York. Based in Los Angeles, Kent reports to Michele Ganeless, President, Comedy Central.

Scott Kamins took on the new position of Manager/Digital Services at Vivendi Entertainment. Scott joins Vivendi from Interscope Geffen A&M where he worked in the digital media department for nine years.

CBS-owned duopoly KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV in Los Angeles tagged Scott Diener as VP/News Director. Most recently, Scott was News Director at KTVT-TV and KTXA-TV, the CBS-owned duopoly in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
