Good morning, it’s Friday, January 15, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Google’s brave decision to quit cooperating with Chinese government censors, as well as its announcement that it will finally start deploying beefed up encryption to its Gmail email service, continues to win the company broad support across the technology spectrum. (For more on Google’s stance regarding business and ethics, check out this posting on openness on the Google Public Policy Blog.) In fact, the move seems to be inspiring many industries to reexamine their stance of cooperation with a trading partner that is as daunting as it is potentially profitable. Meanwhile Baidu, China’s dominant search engine, has apparently cut off access to Google’s company blog, reports Search Engine Land. The move, while not fool proof, is an attempt to limit access to the post detailing Google’s decision.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The AP is close to striking a new licensing arrangement with Yahoo that would yield it better fees and higher restrictions around use of its content, per the WSJ. Conversely, Google’s negotiations with the AP have stalled as its contract reaches its expiration date at the end of Jan.
 
Comcast
is launching three new diverse channels in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of its “World of More” programming rollout where it recently completed its digital upgrade of customers from analog to digital. The new networks are The Africa Channel (Channel 297), art and culture network Ovation TV (Channel 270) and English-language Latino network Sí TV (Channel 477).
 
Msnbc.com has responded to the earthquake in Haiti by using its resources to connect people and share information on ways others can help. The site has set up a safe list on Facebook for folks attempting to contact relatives and has published a list of active charitable organizations in Haiti. Msnbc’s @BreakingNews Twitter feed offers additional resources, as well as tweets from the scene.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Fireworks International has picked up the worldwide distribution rights for Roger Corman online video debut, Splatter. The horror-themed Splatter, which premiered in the U.S. on Netflix, offers viewers the opportunity to select the direction of the series by presenting a choice of alternative storylines as the 3 episodes progress. Julie Corman (Box Car Bertha) and Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling) direct and Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys) stars.
 
Video sharing site Vimeo announced that the site’s videos are now being formatted for mobile devices, such as the iPod Touch, iPhone, Android or Palm Pre. Users will be able to watch, comment on, or access personal playlists directly from Vimeo’s mobile site vimeo.com/m.
 
Dick Clark Productions is doing its part to drive viewership to the Golden Globes on Sunday with the use of an embeddable widget, powered by Premiere Entertainment Networks, UStream and Mobile Roadie. The widget is streaming various content bursts leading up to the event, including a one-on-one today with host Ricky Gervais and a multi-host, multi-camera red carpet show on Sunday afternoon.

Directory assistance and enhanced information services provider kgb announced it is running a :30 second spot during the Super Bowl to promote its “542542” text answer service. The .99/per answer service provides quick concise answers to SMS users on demand. The firm is currently considering 3 ads, including one with William and Stephen Baldwin; one will run during the third quarter and the other two during the pre-game.

Burbank, CA-based 3D technology company 3ality Digital has signed on to support the launch of BSkyB‘s 3D TV service across the pond in the UK and Ireland. BSkyB will utilize 3ality Digital’s “3flex” cameras and image processors to produce much of the 3D content it plans to broadcast including sports, movies, entertainment, the arts and live concerts.
 
Verizon’s Maitreyi Krishnaswamy, Director of Interactive Services for FiOS TV, provided some background about the services’ in-network widget platform, a product she thinks provides FiOS TV with a competitive advantage over its rivals. FiOS TV Widgets, accessible from the Widget Bazaar Store while watching any video channel, are more robust than cable set-top-based alternatives because they run across Verizon’s hybrid IP/broadcast fiber network, enabling much faster processing and less latency.
 
Cash-strapped Blockbuster helped investors rest a little easier after announcing that it has eliminated $24 million in letters of credit related to its former parent company, Viacom. The move frees up cash and liquidity for the rental movie giant as its tries to transition to a digital distribution model.
 
Pay TV conditional access technology provider NDS released an end-to-end solution for the e-publishing industry. The platform provides security, middleware and advertising technologies to secure and monetize books, newspapers and magazines on e-reader devices, including LCD tablets, e-Ink devices and other compatible consumer electronics devices.
 
Apple‘s legal team cried foul regarding Valleywag’s Apple Tablet Scavenger Hunt, which is offering cash prizes for info on the mythical device. Gawker seems determined to continue with the contest.

Google’s search share rebounded last month also according to Hitwise figures, sending the most visits to the top four vertical categories among the top three search engines. Google’s percentage of upstream traffic grew for the Automotive, Shopping and Travel categories. Bing also saw double-digit growth among all four categories and Yahoo! Search saw double-digit growth in the Shopping category, but both lost ground overall.

In the wake of the tragedy in Haiti, online security specialist Symantec put out a couple of tips to warn users against fraudsters:

  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links in email or IMs as these may link to spoofed web sites. Type addresses, such as those from a charitable organizations, directly to the browser
  • Never fill out forms in messages that ask for personal or financial information or passwords

Turner Classic Movies
(TCM) is launching a series of apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry and Android to deliver content from the network’s popular website. The app will offer access to complete network schedules up to 2 months in advance, TCM’s handy classic movie database – featuring synopses, credits, trivia, detailed background information sourced from the AFI – and rich film-themed media including widescreen trailers, clips and photographs from the TCM archives. The iPhone version is out now for $3 and the Blackberry and Android version are due out of Feb.

Typograffit is a new $2 iPhone app that lets you type a simple text message into a box to produce a cool graphic representation of that message that you can share with friends, post to social networks or email directly. The app draws from a database of images of text (either single letters or groups of letters.) You can also upload your own images of text and add them to the library. It’s a perfect complement to MMS (multimedia message service,) which was finally recently launched by AT&T for the iPhone.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
TV Guide Network
has hired Diane Robina as EVP/Development, Acquisitions and Programming Strategy, responsible for continuing to fill out the network’s line up with original and acquired fare. Diane, who played a key role in bringing HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm to the network, was hired as head of Comcast’s Emerging Networks in 2006 and will continue to serve as President of the division’s FEARnet, a joint venture between Comcast, Lionsgate and Sony Pictures Television. She will report to Ryan O’Hara, President of TV Guide Network and TVGuide.com.
 
Comedy Central has named Kent Alterman as Head of Original Programming and Production. The former producer and director (Semi-Pro) will report to Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless in the network’s Los Angeles office.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Public broadcaster PBS, which recently retooled its video site to make it much easier on the eyes and the mouse, continues to impress by devoting significant creative resources to its online efforts. The network unveiled two new projects at TCA this week worth noting. In partnership with its local New York affiliate, WNET.org, PBS plans to launch “Need To Know” in May, a broadcast and online news show hybrid. The idea is to cover stories using multiple mediums that are getting missed as less and less American pick up a newspaper. The property will aggregate news and public affairs content along with offerings from editorial partners in a weekly one hour show produced by WNET.org  and via a “supervertical” site at pbs.org. PBS also continues to up the ante for its online kids properties. Lifeboat to Mars is a new Flash-based educational game designed by Red Hill Studios that includes an ambitious array of customization features. Watching online video to today’s kids is like reading the cereal box for earlier generations. PBS says kids watched more than 87.5 million video streams across the PBS Kids family of sites last month, a new high for the portal.
