01/14/05

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 14, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Premiering Tonight:
Sci-Fi:  Battlestar Gallactica at 9pm
Fox:    Johnny Zero at 9p

Casting / Development / Production

  • SciFi has ordered production begin on its new rocket fuel reality series, Master Blasters (First Television) where teams of amateur rocket scientists race each other to design, build and eventually launch rocket propelled objects into space.
  • SciFi has also announced several new projects in development: Gordion (First Television) is designed as a half hour animated weekly about a guy named Jake Gordion and his merry band of robots, androids, humans, talking body parts and animal freaks, all galavanting about in a spaceship.  Mind Game (Hallock-Healey Entertainment) is a 60m weekly brain-teasing mind-bending reality competition where teams wade through clues and red herrings to claim the top prize. The Gauntlet (Reveille and Hoegl/Singer in association with Princess Productions) is a reality competition where participants literally run a physically challenging gauntlet over a 24 hour period, testing their stamina and endurance. Dallas in Wonderland (RJ Cutler’s Actual Reality Pictures) with host Dallas Campbell finds him trying to accomplish any number of seemingly unattainable goals – applying to NASA for participation in the space program, attempting to convince the Raelians to clone him, or whatever crazy thing comes to mind. Still in Search of [working title] (FremantleMedia North America) is a mockumentary makeover and docu-spoof with host Jonathan Frankle in search of paranormal on a shoestring budget.
  • CBS has ordered two pilots – Threshold (Paramount TV) focuses on a government analyst and her team’s engagement with an alien life form.  American Crime (Jerry Bruckheimer TV/Warner Bros. TV) is about suburban mom / prosecutor.
  • UPN has also greenlighted two pilots – Triangle (Shore View Ent/Paramount TV) is about a young newlywed doctor who’s wife disappeared on their island resort honeymoon, he stays on to try to find her as well as tend to the medical needs of the island residents. Wildlife (Axelrod Edwards Co / Paramount TV) is a 20-something ensemble comedy/drama set in Hollywood.

A new episode of ABC‘s Lost on Wednesday night dominated the ratings with a 7.9/21 A18-49 according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research.  That performance set up Alias at 9pm and it delivered a 5.9/14, both shows owning their respective time periods. 10pm on Wednesdays has become a bit of horse race, this time a tie between Law & Order and its departure of Elisabeth Rohm (former ADA Serena Southerlyn) and CSI: NY, both posting a 4.6/12. Wife Swap was close behind with a 4.2/11. UPN’s Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot delivered a 1.4/4 A18-49 at 8pm.

MTV Networks’ Logo has pushed back its launch date until June 30 according to Brian Graden, President/Logo and President/Entertainment for MTV, VH1 and CMT.  The new gay/lesbian-oriented channel was originally set to premiere on February 14.  In addition to a desire to hone the channel’s creative aspects, the channel’s president is faced with carriage issues with a present reach of only 3 million homes.  By the time the new launch date arrives, Logo will be available to 10 million subscribers with Comcast, Time Warner, RCN and Adelphia as possible new carriers.  Logo’s original programming will include Noah’s Ark, My Fabulous Gay Wedding and Cruise. The documentaries under Momentum’s (its documentary division) belt include Beautiful Daughters, In the Name of Allah, Gay Fraternities and Sororities and Gay Republicans.   Logo has secured such films as HBO’s Angels in America, Billy Elliott, Mullholland Drive, Far from Heaven, Being John Malkovich, In the Gloaming, Party Monster, The 24th Day and A Home at the End of the World.

Fox is offering its cancelled series on line – some on a pay-per-view basis, and some free.  According to Variety, come Monday you can order up all eight episodes of the busted series Playing it Straight for $9.99 for all eight, or $1.99 per ep.
