Veteran soap opera actress Frances Reid, 95, died Wednesday. Frances appeared for more than 40 years on the NBC daytime drama Days of Our Lives as Alice Horton, the matriarch of the show’s pivotal family. Due to her declining health, she appeared on the show less and less though was referred to often by the other characters. Ken Corday, executive producer of Days of Our Lives released this statement, “This is a very sad day, indeed; not only for me personally, but for the ‘Days of our Lives’ family and the entire Hollywood community. From day one until she taped her last scene, Frances epitomized the past, present and future of the show. Frances was truly one of a kind. Her class cannot be matched and her shoes cannot be filled … we will miss her all the rest of our days.”
One of early television’s female pioneers, Frances Buss, 92, died January 19 in Hendersonville, NC following a stroke. Frances began her television career in 1941, by taking a temporary job at CBS. The aspiring actress was put on the air almost immediately, taking on a Vanna White-type role where she held props and kept score for TV’s first broadcast game show, CBS Television Quiz. She made other on-camera appearances then moved into directing TV dramas including Sorry, Wrong Number and other game shows such as What’s It Worth?, sports events, an early cooking show called To the Queen’s Taste, the talk show Mike and Buff starring Mike Wallace and his then-wife Buff Cobb, a daily interview show called Vanity Fair and a children’s series. In 1951, Frances became co-director of the CBS program Premiere, one of the first programs to be regularly broadcast in color, and retired from television in 1954.
New premium entertainment network, Epix made a carriage deal with Charter Communications. Financial terms were not disclosed. When Epix launches this May, it will be available to almost 16 million homes. Epix, a joint venture of Viacom Inc., MGM and Lionsgate, made previous distribution deals with Cox Communications, Verizon’s FiOS TV and Mediacom Communications.
Syfy picked up the basic cable rights for all 26 episodes of the series Merlin from FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME). The deal includes the US TV premiere of season two of Merlin which has never before been seen in America. Syfy will premiere the series this April. Originally, season one of Merlin aired on NBC last summer and seasons one and two aired on BBC One in the UK during 2008-09. BBC is moving forward with a third season, slated to air in September. FME is also involved with brand licensing and home entertainment for the series.
Classic Media acquired the international distribution rights for all global media for the animated tween kids series My Life Me, produced by CarpeDiem Film & TV of Canada and ODM of France. The series has 52 11-minute episodes that were also co-produced by Canadian kids’ broadcaster, Teletoon Canada inc and French broadcasters, FranceTelevisions and Canal J. Each broadcaster will premiere the series this year.
HBO’s True Blood series has cast its last major new role for the upcoming third season. Actress Brit Morgan (ABC Family’s The Middleman) will portray Debbie Pelt, the psycho ex-girlfriend of werewolf Alcide, played by Joe Manganiello.
TBS tapped Gary Cole to helm its 60m comedy pilot Uncle Nigel. Cole will play Nigel Wells, a longtime Philadelphia homicide detective who takes on his incompetent, rookie nephew as his partner. This casting has lifted the contingency on the project that is written and executive produced by Andy Breckman, creator of Monk.
Emily Rose, known for her previous role on NBC’s ER, will headline Syfy’s drama series Haven, based on the Stephen King novella The Colorado Kid. Rose will play Audrey Parker, an FBI agent who lands in the small town of Haven, Maine to solve a murder. She soon discovers the town in a refuge for people with supernatural powers and secrets including secrets to her own past. The series is produced by E1 Entertainment and production on the ordered 13 episodes will likely begin this spring and premiere on Syfy yet this year. Haven will also be distributed to Syfy’s pay channels worldwide with E1 involved in the international distribution.
PTV Productions got the approval to produce an additional 13 episodes of the series Star Portraits which will air on Bravo! in Canada this fall. The series will highlight 13 new Canadian celebrity artists as it combines portraiture with celebrity biography.
Casting Call: Several audition dates for the seventh season of FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance series are set for next month: Dallas on March 10; Nashville on March 14; Chicago on March 18; and Los Angeles on March 26.
