Cynopsis: DIGITAL

02/05/10

Good morning, it’s Friday, February 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Comments from House members fell somewhat along party lines at yesterday’s hearings regarding the Comcast/NBC Universal merger. Yet even skeptics such as Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) indicated that while there are concerns, there may also be benefits to the deal. He suggested that having a content and technology-savvy company running NBC might help preserve free over-the-air TV and better protect intellectual property online. However some anticompetitive concerns were addressed. When asked about efforts to block Hulu from Boxee, NBCU CEO Jeff Zucker said it was because Boxee was tapping into Hulu illegally, without a business deal in place. But he also claimed “we have always said that we’re open to negotiations.”

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

ABC News announced it will launch a new branded page on Hulu, which parent Disney/ABC became a partner in last year. The page will feature short form news and long form programming from shows such as Good Morning America and Nightline, as well as select programming from digital channel ABC News Now.

New multiplatform movie service Epix signed a carriage agreement with Charter Communications that will bring Epix’ linear, on demand and broadband services to Charter’s entire footprint from May. With Charter, Epix will reach nearly 16 million homes.

Rainbow Media’s WeddingCentral.com will premiere its first original web series on Monday, Feb. 8 entitled “Bridal Breakdown.” Each of the 6 webisodes, produced by Lifefilm Entertainment, thrusts a soon-to-be bride in an outrageous situation before she ties the knot.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Now you can put a face to the tweet. Twitter introduced a new feature called Hovercards that displays profile info about a user each time you hover your mouse over their username. Look for it to launch system wide over the next couple of days.

Continuing to embrace social media, WhiteHouse.gov is collaborating with National Healthy Mothers and Healthy Babies Coalition on a new text4baby campaign, enabling users to send text messages to help expectant mothers and mothers of infants. Sign up for three weekly messages timed to the stage of their child’s development, and get tips on subjects including nutrition and immunization by texting the word “baby” or “bebe”  to 511411.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

A series of recent Google patent filings may offer a glimpse into the companies future products involving behavioral targeting, video advertising and advancing mapping applications, per Mediapost. A filing updated Jan. 28 ‘10 outlines a method for delivering ad targeting and measuring tools over ad network. A June ’09 filing describes a technique for overlaying ad content on videos. Earlier this month a technique is described for embedding advertising in 3D Google mapping environments.

Comcast will begin rolling out its new “Xfinity” branding campaign next week, rebranding its TV, internet and voice products in 11 markets: Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Portland Ore., Seattle, Hartford, Conn., Augusta, Ga., Chattanooga, Tenn. and parts of the San Francisco, per Multichannel News.

Resonate formally introduced its “Attitudinal Targeting” offering for advertisers designed to reach audiences based on their attitudes, values and beliefs. To illustrate how the system works, the company identified a new environmentally concerned subset of mothers with the methodology and cross referenced it with online females overall. Resonate found that Green Moms are:

  • 23% more likely to buy products made by socially responsible companies
  • 22% more likely to go out of their way to buy American made products or services
  • 40% more likely to become an online brand/product advocate

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

After falling victim to a China-originated cyber attack last December, Google is looking to the National Security Agency (NSA) for help in warding off future attacks, according the Washington Post. The two are reportedly hammering out a pact that would allow NSA cybersecurity experts to aid in identifying and preventing future attacks. The partnership is likely to raise privacy concerns about access to user data given to the NSA, which includes members of the FBI and the Dept. of Homeland Security. The story claims that the NSA will not necessarily be viewing users’ individual searches or email accounts.

In a move that will help the proliferation of 3D broadcasting, HDMI Licensing – the group that sets specs for the HDMI audiovisual standard – has made the 3D portion of the HDMI Specification Version 1.4 available for public download on the HDMI Web site. This means that broadcasters and Blu-ray manufacturers will be able begin preparing content to be transmitted to TVs in multiple 3D formats.

Chyron announced that its HyperX3 graphic system will be providing 3D stereoscopic graphics for the live broadcast of the Six Nations Rugby match of England vs. Wales on Feb. 6. The broadcast from Twickenham Stadium, sponsored by O2, will be seen in more than 40, 3D-equipped cinemas around the UK.

Sorenson Media is helping Arizona Senator John McCain in his home state re-election effort, powering a “video supporter wall” of 500-plus postings to highlight key news and issues.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The CW tells us that teen favorite Gossip Girl cracked the 2 million registered fan mark on Facebook yesterday – up from just 500k a year ago. Facebook’s ranking of most followed shows is an eclectic list of genres and demos, including a vibrant community around Nick’s late 90’s sitcom Kenan & Kel, cancelled in 2000. Comedy Central’s South Park rules the roost claiming the #1 spot. The #8 spot is held by “Los Simpson, which has more than 2 million Hispanic Fans.

In addition to a TV buzz reader, Facebook is also becoming a leading news reading service according to a new Hitwise analysis, inspired by a recent ReadWriteWeb piece. It has already overtaken Google News. Last week Facebook accounted for 3.52% of visits to News and Media sites while Google News accounted for 1.39% of visits. The social networking site was 4th overall following only Google search (17.32%), Yahoo (7.89%) and MSN (4.43%.)

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Sling Media‘s $37 SlingPlayer app for the iPhone, which previously allowed viewers to watch and control Slingbox content from their handsets only via a Wi-Fi connection, has been cleared for usage over AT&T’s 3G network, per the NYTimes. If you already own the previous version, a free upgrade will be available.

AT&T is holding another Apps for All contest at CTIA in Las Vegas next month, calling for pitches for Brew Mobile, Android, Java & RIM and an “open” category. The winner in each category will receive $10k. Each developer may only submit an app in one category.

Silver Lining Ideas has come up with a $1.99 Chinese New Year-themed Magic 8 ball style app for the iPhone. Make a wish or ask a question then shake the Lucky Day app for some karmic direction. It’s for a good cause; Silver Lining is donating 100% of profits to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, addressing animal relief efforts in Haiti.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Google EVP/Strategic Partnerships David Eun is jumping ship to join former colleague Tim Armstrong at AOL as President of AOL Media and Studios, effective Mar. 1.  He replaces Bill Wilson as AOL’s top content executive and will oversee AOL’s NYC and LA studios, its more than 80 content sites, SEED.com, as well as recent acquisition StudioNow.

Online video ad firm ScanScout named online ad veteran Jason Krebs as its EVP, a new role within the company. Most recently, Jason co-founded video ad technology provider ShortTail Media, Inc. where he served as President, Sales and Marketing.

Chris Nicotra is joining comScore as Chief Technology Officer, a post vacated when former comScore CTO Greg Dale was appointed COO. Chris will be responsible for overseeing software engineering, data application engineering, and infrastructure technology.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Many of us would like to know what, if any, “negotiations” have taken place between Hulu and Boxee (see top story). In a blog post, Boxee founder Avner Ronen suggests an “openness” to negotiate was not in place before, but that he welcomes it now. He also reminds the industry that Boxee simply accesses Hulu content through a web browser, ads an all, and that there is nothing illegal about presenting browser-based content through a different interface. Conventional wisdom has held that Hulu sees Boxee has a competitor to its own Hulu Desktop solution (currently blocked from playing on anything but a PC), which may presumably be offered as a TV application in the future. Hulu is also widely thought be considering a pay model. But neither of these developments are likely to happen until the NBCU/Comcast deal closes. IMHO, I say this hold up is precisely the reason why NBC, Fox and ABC should go ahead and talk to Boxee. Nearly 1 million users are watching shows through Boxee now, an increasing number through their televisions. Hulu should be apart of this migration; with the CPMs it commands, it will get paid.

Correction: The name of the company that provided yesterday’s Super Bowl ad buzz data was Collective Intellect; they’re based in Portland, OR.
