CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/03/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 3, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tribune Entertainment‘s syndicated off-net American Idol Rewind has now been cleared in more than 80% of the country, and 96 markets. The one-hour, weekend series from FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment, will premiere in September with the first season of American Idol. The new series will also feature original, never-seen-before episodes.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*Court TV and America’s Most Wanted are working together in a cross-over on Catherine Crier Live.  Starting today, Crier will be joined on her 5p show by a correspondent from Fox’s AMW, who’ll be bringing current news on the most wanted and a hotline number to call with tips.

Q Television Network will provide content for Verizon FiOS TV, Verizon’s new fiber-optic TV service. Through the agreement, Verizon FiOS TV will offer QTN as a premium subscription service.  Shows included in the deal are Brunch, QueerEdge wtih Jack E. Jett, Q on the Move, QTN World News, among others. Under the agreement, Verizon will also provide all of its subscribers with access to VOD content from QTN at no additional charge.

Healthy Living with Twist will be distributing its programming online via Google Video, including a wide selection of programming from series and documentaries to short form.  Downloads will cost between $1.99 to $3.99 per title.

Coming to an iTunes podcast near you starting today will be ABC’s Sunday night hit series, Grey’s Anatomy.  This will not be the audio track from the show, but rather one-on-one conversations between cast members and producers, talking about the next broadcast episode as well as provide insight to their own characters. The first podcast will feature Kate Walsh and exec producer Jim Parriott, talking about the episode that will follow the Sunday Super Bowl Game.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *In the latest of American Idol type contests, this one is from FremantleMedia and Simon Cowell, both of whom know a little more perhaps about producing another Idol-styled show.  Picked up by NBC, this show is looking for the next Las Vegas headliner, which is not limited to singers but also includes dancers, animal acts, comedians, etc.  Simon will not appear on camera, but rather is listed as an executive producer.  NBC is looking at 9 episodes, probably 60m long.  Title and format, as well as timing has not been worked out yet.

CBS has picked up an animated series pilot called Creature Comforts.  THe show is based on a format that is popular in the UK.  In the project, the audio from interviews with real people, is imposed on a series of animated animals who sit about discussing a variety of topics.  The network has order 7 half hour episodes for midseason next year. The series is from Aardman Animations.

NBC picked up two new pilots, per Variety:

  • Alpha Mom is about a woman trying to forever balance home and office.  The project is from NBC Universal TV Studios and written by Kerry Ehrin.
  • Untitled comedy project starring comedian Kevin Brennan as a guy with a new roommate – his much younger brother. Project is from HBO Independent Prods.

Two new series coming to CMT, according to Hollywood Reporter:

  • A reality series in the choosing of the next Dallas Cowboy Cheerleading Squad, produced by Triage Ent.  CMT has ordered 8 episodes, and it’s scheduled to kick off later on this year.
  • And an 8-episode order for a spinoff of the network’s special Inside the real Coyote Ugly.  Produced by Touchdown Television and set to debut on-air in April, this contest is looking for the best bottle-slinging dancer Coyote Ugly style.

Casting Notes …

NBC‘s backstage project, now titled Studio 60, is a look behind the scenes of a weekly comedy show (think SNL-type), and already stars Matthew Perry as one of the shows writers. Joining Perry will be Amanda Peet as the president of the network, and Evan Handler, Carlos Jacott, Nathan Corddry and Michael Stuhlberg.  NBC has ordered 13 episodes.  The project comes from Adam Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme, and produced by Warner Bros. TV.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *James Sullivan has been named President/CBS Television Stations National Sales. Most recently, James served as VP/Sales for CBS’ Chicago affiliate WBBM. He will oversee national spot sales for 25 CBS stations and report to Tom Kane, President/CEO.

The Weather Channel has named Jody Fennell VP/Broadband Products and Distribution.  In her new role, Jody will oversee a new team which will unify efforts to grow and develop new, non-linear platforms for the company’s video content.

IDT Entertainment announced the appointment of Amorette Jones as EVP/ Marketing. She will be responsible for all marketing and branding strategies for IDT Entertainment and report to Neil Braun, IDT Entertainment’s President/Feature Films & Television.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced that Executive Director Camille Bidermann-Roizen now takes on the added responsibility of SVP. The announcement was made by Academy President/CEO Bruce Paisner after a special meeting of the organization’s Executive Committee. In her new role, Camille will oversee all Academy activities and staff, who will now report directly to her.

MGM has named Jeff Pryor to the newly created post of EVP/Corporate Communications.  The appointment is effective immediately. In his new role, Jeff reports directly to MGM Chairman Harry S. Sloan and will be charged with directing communication and public relations strategies for all of MGM operating divisions.

 * RATINGS *Wednesday- A18-49 Analysis: Fox won the night on Wednesday with an overall 8.8/22 among A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p American Idol drew a 12.4/32, simply dominating the time period over the rest of the field which managed only single digit shares.  At 9p Fox’ Bones held the top dog status, averaging a 5.2/12. CBS was #2 at 9p with a 3.8/9 for a repeat of Criminal Minds. At 10p CBS moved to the top of the list with a 5.3/14, over NBC 2.8/7 for a repeat of Law & Order.
