Good morning, it’s Friday, February 29, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
ABC took the wraps off of Stage 9 Digital Media, a separate creative studio dedicated to producing original series for the internet and other emerging platforms. Although Voicemail was technically its first project, Squeegees represents the studio’s first major release, created by a comedy troupe that calls itself Handsome Donkey. New episodes of the character-driven sitcom about a group of slacker window washers will appear on ABC.com and (beginning March 3) on YouTube each Monday and Friday. Toyota is sponsoring the show’s first 10-episode run. Other projects in the works include a sci-fi thriller called Trenches from Shane Felux (creator of fan film Star Wars: Revelations) as well as a second season of Voicemail.
NBC pulled the plug on quarterlife after just one episode. The online series-turned drama, which drew just over 3 million viewers in its TV debut on Tuesday night at 10 pm (with a 1.3 rating among 18-49 year olds), will now find a home on Bravo according to reports – where the threshold for success is not quite so high. Co-creator Marshall Herskovitz predicted as much on Wednesday at a media conference at the Harvard Business School, calling the show “too specific” for network television.
Multiplatform entertainment producer Ripe Digital unveiled a slate of more than 20 new original series at its “INFront” presentation to advertisers yesterday. New shows included Model Dating, from the writing/producing team of The Simple Life, Ross McCall and Aaron Peters; Are You In?, a viewer-controlled online reality game show; and The One, an interactive competition to find the next “it girl.” Ripe distributes its shows on Time Warner Cable and Comcast’s on demand platforms, through mobile and on broadband via RipeTV, OctaneTV and FlowTV.

It’s been a busy week for MySpace on the programming front as MySpaceTV gears up to compete with YouTube and the plethora of online video portals. New launches include:
- A new socially oriented hidden camera web series Special Delivery, its second original series following Roommates, now in its second season
- A new channel from the Warner Bros. celebrity gossip site/show TMZ
- A new concert event called Operation MySpace designed to serve the US Armed Forces stationed in Kuwait, scheduled to stream live on March 10 at 11 am PT/2 pm ET
Five unique music video podcasts featuring exclusive footage from NBC‘s Heroes will be available for free download on Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace beginning today to promote the release of the Heroes Television Soundtrack on March 18.
MTV is teaming up with Metacafe to launch a Virtual Dance Off contest that will allow fans to create their own user-generated dance moves.
We’ve all heard about how wasteful pilots are lately. A new site called MovieHatch launches today which turns entertainment fans into armchair producers by asking them to vote on video pitches of professional film and TV projects before they’re actually made. Its first offering is short film competition conducted with the 2008 Jackson Hole Film Festival. Beginning March 1, users can vote thumbs up or down on a number of live action, documentary or animation clips. Fan favorites will then be evaluated by industry experts to see which will be screened at this year’s Jackson Hole Film Festival in Wyoming in June.
Online video search engine Blinkx signed new content partnerships with The BBC, CBS and The Weather Channel.
Former NFL star and ESPN anchor Joe Theisman is among the angel investors who have invested $3 million into Dragonfly, another online content delivery network enabling HD video streaming. Joe speaks about how the company helps users move “effortlessly” through the internet in a promotional video on the site.
CBS’ Last.fm launched a new section called Build.last.fm to showcase third-party applications users have built to extend the music discovery’s site’s experience across the web.
Viacom said it reached its goal of $500 million in digital revenues for 2007. The company expects low double-digit growth in digital from 2008-2010.
Local TV newscasts are still the most effective video advertising platform in terms of audience size and engagement, according to a new survey of more than 2,700 viewers conducted for Hearst-Argyle Television by Frank N. Magid Associates. Moreover local TV news video viewing is higher than for any other genre, with 37% of users reporting they watched video on local news sites vs. 31% each for cable news and primetime programming, 24% for reality TV video and 23% for broadcast network news.

Jonathan Shambroom will step up from head of product development and marketing to run Sony’s online short form video site Crackle as SVP/GM. Crackle.com, founded by Dave Samuels and Josh Felser as Grouper, will become the exclusive debut outlet for Sony Pictures Television original online productions such as the Flash-based The Roadents coming this spring.
Discovery.com has come up with a nice Flash-based minisite for a new 4-part special Human Body: Pushing The Limits premiering Sunday night at 9 pm ET/PT. The flexible interface allows you to access different video clips from the special by clicking on different functions of the body – Sight, Strength, Sensation and Brain Power – to learn how it reacts during crisis mode. Interactive games test how well you paid attention.
