~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Sunday’s season two finale of MASTERPIECE CLASSIC’s Downton Abbey on PBS attracted an average audience of 5.4 million viewers, not factoring in replays, DVRs or online streaming.  Downton Abbey’s finale delivered a 3.5 HH overnight rating based on Nielsen Fast National data which is the highest for a PBS program since the premiere of Ken Burn’s National Parks series in September 2009.  Throughout its second season, Downton Abbey delivered an audience that was more than double the PBS primetime average and its average rating was 25% higher than the first season based on metered market averages.  Downton Abbey is a co-production of Carnival/Masterpiece.

CBS extended its deal with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to keep the Kennedy Center Honors broadcast on CBS through 2018.  The annual special has aired on CBS since its premiere in 1978.

A fourth season is on tap for animated series Archer on FX produced by FX Productions.  A handful of episodes remain in season three with the finale scheduled for March 22 at 10p.

During Wednesday’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC, news broke of National Geographic Channel’s plans to renew series Rocket City Rednecks for a second season.  Production will begin in March and the network will roll out the season premiere later this year.  Rocket City Rednecks is produced by Flight 33 for NGC.

CMT renewed two original unscripted series airing on Saturdays: Bayou Billionaires and My Big Redneck Vacation.  Both have averaged close to one million total viewers since their January premieres and will air their first season finales on March 31 beginning at 9p.  Bayou Billionaires and My Big Redneck Vacation return on CMT with their second seasons in June.

A trio of series received episode orders from HGTV, reports Variety.  Thirteen episodes each were handed to My Yard Goes Disney which airs new episodes starting in June; Room Crashers hosted by Todd Davis is back for a third season this summer; and Selling New York will open an eighth season.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino is in the final negotiations to join CBS’ drama pilot Trooper from Jerry Bruckheimer.  Sorvino would headline the drama playing a common-sense mother-turned-New York state trooper.  Warner Bros. Television is producing.

In further casting news from CBS, Brandon Routh joins comedy pilot Partners, the project from Will & Grace creators, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan and Greg Grunberg joins the cast of Greg Berlanti/Greg Malins’ untitled romantic comedy pilot.

ABC’s musical drama pilot Nashville added Jonathan Jackson to the cast playing Avery, an aspiring musician who is a bad boy.

Soon after her stint on FX’s American Horror Story, Mena Suvari and also Kyle Howard landed co-starring roles in the untitled NBC comedy from Hilary Winston.

Also for NBC, the thriller Midnight Sun added Michael Raymond-James to play opposite Titus Welliver.

Former Friday Night Lights cast member Aimee Teegarden will star in The CW’s drama pilot The Selection.  Teegarden will play a poor young woman who is selected by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-ravaged nation on the brink of change.  The pilot is based on the upcoming book series by Kiera Cass, an epic romance set 300 years in the future.  Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain are on board to write and serve as EPs; Warner Bros. Television is producing.

TLC is exploring the world of tight wads by ordering the new series Extreme Cheapskates.  Over eight half-hour episodes, the series will look at individuals who look for creative ways to cut costs.  Casting is underway and the network will likely premiere the series this summer.  Last December 28, TLC aired a one-hour special, Extreme Cheapskates which drew in 1.6 million viewers.  Stephen David Entertainment is behind the series for TLC.
