Good morning. It’s Friday, February 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Endemol USA acquired animation site JoeCartoon.com, one of the first original video content sites that hit big on the internet in the late 1990s. Viral hits such as Frog in a Blender launched on JoeCartoon.com have been viewed more than 90 million times. Endemol plans to distribute the original animation for mobile platforms and is working to develop a TV series based on regular characters such as SuperFly, the Greenfields and JoeMomma. A redesign of JoeCartoon.com is also planned for June.
¡Sorpresa!, the kid targeted Spanish language network, has launched a new broadband video service with Brightcove’s Internet TV platform. Kids who visit http://www.sorpresatv.com , the new ¡Sorpresa! channel on Brightcove.com, or any website affiliate that syndicates ¡Sorpresa! content, will have access to the channel’s programming library of short-form video clips from popular preschool series (e.g. Tienda Mágica, El Planeta de Remi, Hello Kitty). The new broadband service is ad-sales supported, thus producing a new source of revenue for ¡Sorpresa!
Novel Entertainment has inked an international sales and distribution deal with Nelvana Enterprises to distribute the 2D animated series Horrid Henry (52×11′) worldwide, excluding the UK and German-speaking territories. The series is based on the Horrid Henry series of books written by Francesca Simon and illustrated by Tony Ross and published by Orion Children’s Books, which have been translated into 21 languages. Horrid Henry is known around the world under various names including, Pablo Diablo in Spain and Rico Le Peste in Italy.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Ummm, Martin Scorsese to direct a movie for kids? Sure, why not? Stranger things have happened. Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to Brian Selznick’s kid’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret from Scholastic in the hopes that Scorsese will agree to helm the project, according to Variety. Screenwriter John Logan, who adapted The Aviator, which was headed by Scorsese, is adapting the book for the screen, which, by the way, was only recently released.
Lassie is currently in production on her new pet healthcare and lifestyle series, Lassie’s Pet Vet (13×30′), from Classic Media. Lassie will be joined on the magazine style series by her co-host Veterinarian, Dr. Jeff Weber. Distributed by American Public Television, Classic Media will support the series affiliate partners through outreach efforts, including local events, Lassie station visits, custom on-air and online promos, in-school lesson plans and a web companion piece. Lassie’s Pet Vet is produced by Popular Arts Entertainment for Classic Media.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Toon Disney has picked up a second season of 26×30′ episodes of Yin Yang Yo! for its Jetix action/adventure block. The channel will feature key plot turns from season one next month during the Yin Yang-Tastic Weekend Friday, March 9 (7-9p) through Sunday, March 11 (7-9p). A 90-minute season one finale, titled Woofoogeddon, will air the following day, Monday, March 12 (7:30-9p), featuring the premiere of three back-to-back episodes. Training for Woofoogeddon, an online game will launch on March 12 just prior to the special at www.jetix.tv/woofoogeddon . Yin Yang Yo! will begin airing on Jetix in Europe and Latin America at the end of the month. Produced by Jetix Animation Concepts and Disney Television Animation, the series created by Bob Boyle, who also serves as its executive producer along with series writer Steve Marmel.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Later today at New York Comic Con, 4Kids Entertainment and TC Digital Games will announce that the new Chaotic Trading Card Game will launch at retail and online ( www.chaoticgame.com ) simultaneously on May 16, 2007. Based on the animated TV series Chaotic, which airs on 4Kids TV on Fox, the Chaotic Trading Card Game marks 4Kids’ first foray as a producer of a product to be sold at retail. At the end of last year the company established two new divisions, TC Digital Games, LLC, a trading card company, and TC Websites, LLC, an online multi-platform gaming company; both operate out of San Diego. 4Kids is a majority owner of TC Digital and a 50% owner of TC Websites.
Nickelodeon kicks off Slime Across America, a 50 market interactive tour, this coming Monday, February 26, 2007 in Orlando, Florida at the Nick Hotel. The tour will then work its way, in an 18-wheel Slime Mobile driven by the infamous Pick Boy, to the initial 20 slimy stops in as many markets arriving in LA for the 20th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards on March 31. The remaining 30 market tour stops will take place after Kids’ Choice. Among the tour features are the Nick Live! Slime Edition stage show, a user generated content area where kids can create content to submit to Nick’s new me:tv programming block (5-7p), walk-around characters, and select stops will also feature Nickelodeon talent and national and local celebrities, and of course someone is gonna get slimed. The network will televise several of the slimmings during me:tv, beginning March 11-31. Additionally, the Orlando kick-off event will be featured on TEENick on March 11. EXECUTIVE MOVES
Hit Entertainment has tapped Andi Copley as Managing Director and Executive Producer, Hot Animation. Copley takes over the position that went vacant last month when Jackie Cockle left to join Aardman. She will be responsible for the operation of the stop-frame animation studio’s production slate as well as growing its third-party work. Copley, who will relocate from LA to Manchester, England, will report to Lenora Hume, Hit’s EVP/Production and Programming. Previously Copley has served in Sr. management positions for a range of companies including, Warner Bros., Disney Channel, Sprout, Film Roman, Klasky Csupo, ABC, CBS and NBC.
Walden Media and Fox have made named the core executives of the marketing team of Fox-Walden, their new joint venture that will produce family-friendly movies.
- Eric Alan appointed SVP/Creative Advertising. Previously Alan served as Creative Director at Trailer Park, and before that as Creative Director, Nickelodeon Movies. Previously he was Executive Director/Branding, ABC and Sr. Producer, FX Cable Network.
- Heather Johnson Phillips named SVP/Publicity. She had been VP/Publicity, Fox where she worked on an range of movies. Previously she was VP/Publicity, Miramax Films.
- Lisa Bay Adams appointed VP/Marketing and Promotions. Prior to this Adams served as Director/Marketing and Promotions, Anschutz Film Group, and before that as Marketing Manger/National Promotions, Disney.
- Jason Rein named Director/Creative Content. Most recently, Rein was Digital Content Producer/Theatrical Marketing, Fox Atomic. Beginning his career as post-production coordinator at Fox, Rein also served for a time as Scott Rudin’s assistant.
There are a bevy of new promotions and hires to report in Scholastic’s trade publishing division.
- Moving up: Anne Henderson is upped to Director/Business, from her previous role as Director/Planning and Analysis; Adrienne Vaughan becomes Sr. Manager/Pre-Publication Planning, she had been Manager/Frontlist Planning; Yanira Castro moves to Manager/Frontlist Planning, she was Sales Analyst.
- New Hires: Nisha Chakravarty joins the company as Director/Finance, reporting to David M. Asher VP/Finance, she had been with Time Inc.; Corinne Van Natta will join as Director/Mass Market and Special Sales, reporting to Alan Smagler, VP/Sales, previously she was Director/Mass Market, Simon & Schuster; Kathleen Rose has signed on as Marketing Coordinator, reporting to Lizette Serrano, Sr. Manager/Conventions & Author Events, previously she was with Nielsen Media Company; Lynn Smith will serve as Director/Licensed Publishing, reporting to Ellie Berger, SVP and Publisher, she had been Director/Licensing and Brand Management, Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.
