Good morning, it’s Friday, February 1, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

ABC News added a real-time election results feature to its mobile web site, providing instant primary and caucus results. ABC News also streams video to the site and optimizes video content for the iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry devices.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Showtime has set up a secure website with online video services provider Brightcove to stream full seasons of its original shows to TV Academy members, including Weeds, Dexter and Californication. The company says eliminating the need to send out bulky Emmy DVD packages will cut down on piracy and environmental impact.
 
The web has incubated another high profile TV drama. The HD online series Sanctuary, down in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest budget project ever made for the internet, has been picked up by Sci Fi Channel for a season of 13 one-hour episodes. Like the CGI-laden web series, Sanctuary will utilize live actors in front of a green screen, as in the feature films 300 and Sin City. It will also feature the same cast that appeared in the online version, led by Sci Fi Channel regular Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis).
 
CAN Communicate and FIFA will utilize Narrowstep‘s IPTV platform to offer download services to more than 250 TV networks worldwide, providing access to CAN’s Football’s Hidden Story series free of charge. Broadcasters can also access additional B-roll footage, as well as scripts and separate audio files for radio or podcasts.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Application developer Wallop is enabling content providers MTV, Paramount and Fox to host TV viewing parties on Facebook and Bebo with a widget called Party On. Users can invite their friends by sending customizable invitations, helping studios build buzz around new shows, movie premieres, season premieres and DVD releases.
 
Will Hartman’s sardonic Tough Love and Nick Hagen’s mocumentary The Paranormalists have emerged as the grand prize winners of The Storyteller Challenge, sponsored by MySpaceTV, FOX and the Producer’s Guild of America.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Amazon acquired spoken word digital audio company Audible for $300 million, adding a potential new content provider for its Kindle digital book device. Audible has compiled a catalog of over 80,000 digital programs from famous authors and more than 520 content partners including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Fresh Air and Charlie Rose. Audible.com, a big iTunes supplier, offers programs a la carte or through a monthly or annual subscription plan.
 
Yahoo is ready to acquire video hosting company Maven Networks for about $150 million, reports TechCruch. Maven handles video streaming duties for clients such as Fox News, CBS Sports and Scripps and operates a new Internet TV Advertising Platform designed to maximize dynamic ad insertion revenue.
 
The four men who operate the defiant file-sharing site The Pirate Bay have been charged with conspiracy to violate copyright law in Sweden. The lawsuit names Warner Bros., MGM, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Sony BMG, Universal and EMI as plaintiffs, accusing the site of profiting by offering downloads of copyright-protected content. The Pirate Bay, which is still operating despite the charges, claims a user base of over 2.5 million active registered users.
 
The comeback of the PlayStation3 helped boost Sony‘s earnings by 25% during Q4, as PS3 sales more than tripled from the previous quarter. Electronics sales rose 10% to 2.1 trillion yen.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Google‘s Head of Ad Sales Tim Armstrong suggested TV advertising would resemble web-based direct response models in the near future during a panel discussion at NATPE, after image and video search functionality get baked into the TV platform. Preliminary set top data trials with EchoStar’s Dish Network indicate commercial zapping is even more prevalent than previously thought, he said.
 
Adify announced that it’s Build Your Own Network (BYON) of more than 90 publishers completed the Internet Advertising Bureau’s impression auditing and certification process. A dozen networks have now been certified by the IAB, including DoubleClick, AOL’s Adtech and Microsoft’s Atlas.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The Bush Administration tried to convince critics the state of broadband penetration in America has vastly improved under his watch in a new report issued by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. FCC numbers indicate broadband subscribers have grown from 6.8 million in Dec. 2000 to 82.5 million in Dec. 2006. But here’s the catch: the FCC defines broadband as 200 k/sec. at a time when developed European and Asian nations are enjoying speeds of 4-6 gigabytes/second. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has used the excuse that American’s vast rural areas present a unique challenge to the broadband infrastructure in the U.S. But critics worry the lack of bandwidth is placing America at a serious competitive disadvantage.
 
Engagement numbers on America’s leading social networks are trending downward, according to the latest ComScore data, suggesting the social networking fad may finally be waning. Even on Facebook, which increased its user base from 19.1 million to 34.7 million in the past year, users averaged 169.4 minutes on the site for the month of Dec. 2007, after averaging 195 minutes two months earlier.

TNS Media Research launched yet another set top box measurement service culling data from 100,000 willing DirecTV households. Describing itself as the largest US audience measurement panel ever, TNS DirecTView will provide second-by-second measurement of live and time-shifted DVR program and commercial viewing.
 
Meanwhile CBS became the second major broadcast network to subscribe to Tivo’s Stop||Watch DVR measurement service.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Mark Cranwell was named Director of Content Acquisition for Babelgum. He will report directly to Simon Kenny, Babelgum’s Head of Content Strategy and Advertising, and will be based in the company’s London offices.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
NATPE pulled out all the stops this year to try and remain relevant and help the industry meet the challenges presented by the digital age. There were dozens of digitally-themed panels, prominent speakers from all over the space and even mobile alerts sponsored by Hip Cricket to inform attendees of last minute venue changes. Heck, they even put together a viral video screened at the opening session combining classic TV and internet moments. Now if NATPE can figure out how to sell video streams of the sessions instead of relying on snail mailed DVDs (not shipping until Feb. 19), they’d really be with it.
