OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network slated spring premiere dates for two new original series:
- Addicted to Food shares stories of eight eating disorder patients who are going through rehab at the Shades of Hope treatment center. The eight episode docu-series debuts March 29 at 10p and is produced by Tijuana Entertainment.
- The Judds follows the famous mother-daughter singing duo of Naomi and Wynonna Judd during their reunion tour. The six-episode series will bow April 10 at 9p and is produced for OWN by Gay Rosenthal Productions, Inc.
GMC revealed its 2011 programming slate showcasing a handful of new original music series:
- America Sings, a weekly series highlighting choirs and singing groups across the nation.
- Rolling Thunder Review described as “The Partridge Family meets The A Team” about a music group that travels to towns and helps people in need.
- America’s First Family of Entertainment searches for America’s most talented family with the winning family receiving their own variety show special on GMC.
- Additionally, GMC welcomes an expanded slate of GMC World Premiere Movies and specials in 2011 focused on Gospel/Christian music content.
Production will resume on the set of CBS’ sitcom Two and a Half Men on February 28. CBS committed to making only four more episodes to complete the current seventh season, four fewer eps than originally ordered. Until these new episodes are ready, CBS will likely continue to air reruns of Two and a Half Men in its regular Monday night time slot.
Spring and baseball are around the corner and the MLB Network will air 83 games as part of its 2011 Spring Training coverage. The games begin February 26 with the Philadelphia Phillies versus the New York Yankees live from Tampa at 1p. The full schedule, airing through March is available at www.MLBNetwork.com . Furthermore, MLB Network’s Spring Training series, 30 Clubs in 30 Days begins February 28 with 60m features highlighting each of the thirty Major League clubs for the 2011 season. And, MLB Tonight, the network’s signature studio show during the regular season opens February 28 live at 6p.
Heading back to the farm, Planet Green premieres a second season of The Fabulous Beekman Boys on March 22 at 10p. The sophomore season opens with the “gentlemen farmers” Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell working hard to figure out how Josh can leave his job in Manhattan and join Brent full-time on the farm. During season two, Brent’s former boss Martha Stewart makes an appearance as well as Rosie O’Donnell and chef Marcus Samuelsson. World of Wonder produces the series.
Cult-favorite sci-fi series Firefly returns to basic cable as the Science Channel acquired the exclusive rights to the 15-part series. Science Channel debuts Firefly from creator Joss Whedon on March 6 at 8p starting with the original two-hour pilot. Directly after, the first one-hour episode will air the same night at 10p. Firefly will then run on Sundays with the encore episode from the previous week scheduled at 9p followed by the network premiere of a second episode at 10p. Firefly has not aired on a basic cable channel since 2008 when USA Network ran the series.
Prolific veteran actor Len Lesser died Wednesday morning in Burbank, CA at the age of 88. Best known for playing Jerry Seinfeld’s Uncle Leo on the television series Seinfeld, Mr. Lesser actually tallied more than 500 film, television and stage appearances. Other television credits include Studio One in Hollywood in 1949, a recurring role on Everybody Loves Raymond, ER, Mad About You, Thirtysomething, The Bob Newhart Show, The Mod Squad, Green Acres, All in the Family, The Monkees among many others and also more recently a 2009 role on ABC’s Castle. Mr. Lesser’s film roles include Gallipoli, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Kelly’s Heroes. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle and his son, David and three grandchildren.
Drama series The Closer cleared for a second season in broadcast syndication in more than 88% of the country according to Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. The Fox Television Stations picked up the hour-long drama airing on weekends in 16 markets consisting of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas and more. Forty other station groups have also renewed the drama such as CBS, Tribune, Belo, Lin, Cox, Fisher, Nexstar, Media General, Meredith, Local TV, Raycom, New Age, New Vision, Newport, Northwest and Gray among others. The Closer will debut its seventh season this year on TNT produced by The Shephard/Robin Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Retro Television Network (RTV) forged several deals to acquire vintage television series including The Saint starring Roger Moore, The Comedy Shop, Moving On, Celebrity Bowling, The New Zorro and Route 66.
FX is moving forward on the new 60m original drama series pilot, American Horror Story from executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (Nip/Tuck, Glee). Murphy and Falchuk, also co-creators of Glee on FOX, are credited as co-creators on the American Horror Story pilot with Murphy directing. Production on the pilot begins in April. If FX orders the pilot to series, production would begin in late spring with a planned fall 2011 roll-out. Twentieth Century Fox Television is producing; Dante Di Loreto will also serve as executive producer with Murphy and Falchuk.
Casting news:
- NBC tapped Maria Bello (Law & Order: SVU) to play Detective Jane Tennison on the network’s remake of Prime Suspect debuting in the fall. Helen Mirren played the same role in the original UK version winning two Emmy Awards.
- Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) landed the coveted starring role on Wonder Woman also for NBC, a revamped version of the 1970s classic series that starred Lynda Carter. The new version is from David E. Kelley Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
- Christine Lahti (Law & Order: SVU, Chicago Hope) returns to series television as the lead for CBS’ medical drama pilot The Doctor. Lahti will play a mom who reunites with her grown-up child when she joins the family’s medical practice.
- Former Lost star Michael Emerson takes on the lead in CBS’ pilot Person of Interest, the project executive produced by J.J. Abrams and Jonah Nolan. Emerson will portray a billionaire who hires a presumed dead ex-CIA agent to fight violent crime in New York City.
- Syfy cast Aaron Ashmore (Smallville) to join its series Warehouse 13 as new agent Steve Jinks who has the ability to tell when someone is lying.
- Rob Mayes will play one of the leads in TBS’ pilot Hound Dogs a project about a minor league baseball team in Nashville from Ron Shelton, per Variety. Mayes will play an attractive rookie pitcher whose love interest (Laura Bell Bundy) is an aspiring country singer. Chris Butler and Ryan Doom have already been cast for the pilot.
- Alyson Reed reprises her role as drama teacher Ms. Darbus from High School Musical for Disney Channel’s new musical comedy pilot Madison High (wt). The series pilot centers on a group of theater students mentored by their beloved drama teacher Ms. Darbus. Production on the pilot commences next month and Disney Channel will roll out the series in early 2012.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX wowed viewers Wednesday night with an 8.2/23 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, American Idol on FOX won over the competition with a 7.3/21 while the 22nd season of CBS’ Survivor: Redemption Island opened with a 3.2/9 in second place. During 9p, American Idol’s ratings for the two-hour episode on FOX surged to a 9.1/24 while ABC’s comedies Modern Family and Mr. Sunshine averaged a #2 with 3.4/9. CBS’ new series Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior premiered at 10p at #1 with a 3.3/10 and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU was #2 at 2.2/7.
