Good morning, it’s Friday, February 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Google apparently withdrew from the FCC’s C block wireless spectrum auction, leaving AT&T and Verizon to duke it out for a platform that can be used to deliver advanced interactive wireless services. In so doing, the company may achieve what it wanted all along – more competition in the wireless market without spending a dime, argues Business Week, because the spectrum comes tied with open-access requirements. Meanwhile bidding for the 700 Mhz C block band (which everyone thought Google wanted for the “G-phone”) has petered out after a single $472 million bid – well below the $1.3 billion “reserve” price. Perhaps the FCC should have offered a Buy It Now option.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NBC will run a 22-minute sneak peek of the web series – turned hour-long drama quarterlife on MTV Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 4:30 before it premieres at its usual spot at 9 pm on NBC. The idea is to jump start interest among younger viewers.
 
MGM HD secured carriage agreements with RCN and several smaller MSOs extending its reach to Illinois, Minnesota, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Ohio.
 
Verizon FiOS TV will launch the ION network as well as its digital offshoots qubo, ION Life and The Worship Network in Philadelphia, California, North Texas and the Washington metro area.
 
VOOM’s Gallery HD channel will premiere its latest original series Forger’s Master Class on March 3 at 8:30 ET/PT. The “class” will be taught by master art forger John Myatt.
 
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Leveraged video sharing site Revver was acquired by online entertainment platform LiveUniverse for less than $5 million, reported NewTeeVee. LiveUniverse, founded by MySpace co-founder Brad Greenspan, operates sites such as Glumbert.com, BlinkYou.com and LyricsDownload.com.
 
YouTube previewed some new features at a function in New York on Wednesday, according to Deep Focus CEO (and blogger) Ian Schafer. Coming to the site in the near future:

  • Active Sharing: allowing users to share videos while they are actually watching them
  • An Amazon-style recommendation engine (If you liked this, then you major enjoy…)
  • Upgraded video editing tools
  • Multiplatform distribution including mobile and large-screen TVs
  • Additional user behavioral metrics for marketers

 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin criticized the Centris study on Digital TV coverage, indicating it was flawed because it assumed consumers were trying to receive signals with indoor antennas. Centris fired back, pointing out that over 75% of over-the-air viewers do have indoor, set-top antennas and will need to upgrade in order to receive adequate digital reception.
 
Boingo Wireless
signed a deal to provide free Wi-Fi access with network application provider WayPort to over 9,000 McDonalds restaurants in the U.S.
 
The Distributed Computing Industry Association, representing more than 100 P2P companies and social networking software developers, voiced concern about what ISPs are defining as “reasonable network management” strategies as they defend their practices to limit streaming bandwidth usage. 
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Google signed a deal with Nokia to power its Nokia Mobile Search application, with plans to roll it out to customers later this year in more than 100 countries.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
 Nielsen reported that DVR usage is actually increasing television viewing time (something Tivo has argued all along). TV usage increased slightly among 18-49 year olds during the day based on November data. It was 3% higher at 9 pm, then another 5% higher between 11 pm and midnight. The company also identified three distinct groups of time shifters:

  • Heavy Time Shifters: primarily middle income 18-49 year old women who watch 26 hours of TV using the DVR, accounting for half of their total TV viewing
  • Medium Shifters: watch slightly more TV than the average viewer, about 1/3 is time shifted
  • Light Shifters (about 70% of all DVR households): watch less TV than average viewer, have incomes of $100,000+, spend only 10% time shifting

 
ComScore came up with the same delineations for online video viewers:

  • Heavy Viewers: Make up top 20% of viewers, average 841 minutes/month
  • Medium Viewers: Account for next 30%, average 77 minutes/month
  • Light Viewers: Make up the bottom 50%, average only 6 minutes/month

 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
The LA Times named former Business Editor and Orange County Edition Editor Russ Stanton as its new Editor and appointed Jack Klunder to the newly created position of President, Los Angels Times Newspaper. On the digital front Bob Bellack becomes President, Development and Digital Media, and Rob Barrett takes over as SVP/Interactive to lead all initiatives of LATMG’s multimedia and online operations.
 
Former MySpace executives Josh Berman and Colin Digiaro will serve as Co-Presidents of Slingshot Labs, a new online incubator within the News Corp. family to develop web start-ups and partnerships. The new division will be headquartered in Santa Monica.
 
Imageworks Interactive
(recently formed with the merger of Imageworks and Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment) hired Robert Speiser as VP/Marketing and upped JD Black to VP/Client Services. Robert and JD join Scott Nourse, VP/Production alongside Emmanuelle Borde, SVP.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

The cast of Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants created a mashup for the Annie Awards last Friday, doing overdubs of Casablanca, Singin’ in the Rain and The Godfather to prove they shouldn’t be typecast as Spongebob, Squidward, Patrick and Sandy. Classic stuff. It’s been removed from YouTube but it popped up again on College Humor.com. (Pixar’s Ratatouille was the big cheese this year at the Annies, by the way, winning 9 awards including Best Feature.)
