Good morning. It’s Friday, February 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Animation house Copernicus Studios partners with Ireland-based Kavaleer Productions to co-produce the new 2D animated series Garth and Bev (52×11), which is targeted to k4-7. Created by Kavaleer founder, Andrew Kavanagh, Garth and Bev is set to air in March 2010 on BBC UK/Cbeebies and in September 2009 on RTE (Ireland). The series is being distributed by BBC Worldwide and Picture Box for Canada. The show follows the adventures of Garth and his sister Bev, who live back in the Bronze Age with their Druid Grandfather Lir, as travel through time learning about science and invention and meeting the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein, while teaching these greats a thing or two as well. The creators are attending KidScreen Summit this week looking to make additional Canadian presales as well as licensing and publishing opportunities.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Dentsu Inc., a Japanese advertising company, acquires all rights to Chub City from Jada Toys, which it plans to develop as an animated TV series in conjunction with LA-based subsidiary DCI-LA, and creative director Mitsuharu Inoue (producer, Bakugan Battle Brawlers). Terms of the deal were not released. Additional plans include a full Chub City licensing program. Dentsu will own the intellectual property and will manage ongoing interests in the brand with DCI-LA.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific Inc. (Turner) joins with Hong Kong-based mobile operator CSL to launch a 24/7 mobile Cartoon Network channel for Hong Kong. Under the deal, all current subscribers of CSL’s 1010 and one2free services will be able to access premium Cartoon Network content without an additional charge. The new Cartoon Network mobile channel, which is commercial free, will also offer users the regular mobile features including downloadable wallpapers, ringtones and icons.
Electronic Arts (EA) and Hasbro are partnering to launch a new girl-targeted virtual world based on Hasbro’s Littlest Pet Shop brand in fall 2009. The new The Littlest Pet Shop online experience will allow girls to play and customize their favorite pets, connect with friends, and participate in online games, activities and events. EA, which released give Littlest Pet Shop video games in 2008, will release a sixth game, Littlest Pet Shop Spring, for Nintendo DS this March 2009. It is unclear what the launch of this new virtual world means for the existing Littlest Pet Shop VIPs, which launched in February 2008.
Reel FX Entertainment, an animation and visual effects studio, unveils plans to launch its first virtual world, Webosaurs. Targeted to K5-10, Webosaurs features customizable 3D dinosaur avatars, a prehistoric environment themed games (20 single and multi-player games at launch), and educational ‘Webosodes’ from wildlife expert Nigel Marven (BBC’s Prehistoric Park, Walking With Dinosaurs). A hand-drawn world, the Webosaurs story centers on a group of dinosaurs, which have survived extinction, discovered by kids (players). A COPPA compliant site, Webosaurs will be a free-to-play site with access to premium content available through subscriptions (month/$5.94, 6 month/$29.94, 1-year/$49.94) and a micro-transaction system. Reel FX is also set to launch a line of toys in fall 2009 that will work in conjunction with the virtual world. Additionally, Marven will help promote Webosaurs via a national promotional tour of zoos, museums and aquariums.
Boomerang celebrates Valentine’s Day with a string of Johnny Bravo‘s funniest dating disasters in a six and a half hour marathon tomorrow Saturday, February 14, 2-8:30p. Even with that architecturally defiant hair he can’t get it right. The marathon concludes with the network premiere of the special, It’s Valentine’s Day, Johnny Bravo at 8p.
Qubo is sponsoring Simon Kidgits Club‘s (www.simon.com/kidgits) 6th annual Book Blast! tour, which kicks off tomorrow and rung through April 4, 2009. Developed by Simon Brand Ventures, a unit of Simon Property Group, the Book Blast! tour is designed to introduce kids to the world of stories and books as it makes its way to 100 Simon malls nationwide. At each event (free) families are invited to hear stories and take part in various activities including meeting qubo characters such as Maisy and VeggieTales’ Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, as well as getting a look at qubo programming.
NBA and WNBA All-Stars Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets) and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) are teaming with Body By Milk to combat adolescent obesity by getting teens to focus on fitness through a new national campaign called Get Fit By Finals. Launched in conjunction with the at NBA All-Star 2009 in Arizona this week, the effort is part of a new partnership between the “got milk?” Body By Milk Campaign and NBA FIT, the NBA’s health and wellness initiative. Paul and Taurasi, who are featured in new milk mustache ads, launched the semester-long program at the NBA All-Star Game yesterday.
Pokemon USA and Burger King are teaming for a promotional deal that will feature collectible Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) game cards and accessories in BK Kids Meals across North and South America. Participating Burger King restaurants will offer two Pokemon TCG cards (there are a total of 12) and one of six different themed accessories in each Kids Meal. The promotion will launches for three weeks in the US and Canada on June 1, followed by a four-six week program that will launch in South America on July 20.

MTV Networks Latin America ups Tatiana Rodriguez to SVP/Programming and Creative Strategy, Nickelodeon Latin America. Rodriguez, who had been VP/Programming and Creative Strategy, will continue to oversee the operations and programming for the network working in tandem with production, creative and international teams. In addition, she will work with ad sales to facilitate opportunities with corporate partners for ad sales and marketing partnerships. Rodriguez joined Nickelodeon in 1996.
