~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

AMC slated its new original drama series The Killing to premiere with a two-hour opening episode on April 3 at 9p.  Following the premiere, AMC will air one-hour episodes on Sunday’s at 10p.  The Killing’s plot centers on the murder of a teenage girl in Seattle and the police investigation that follows. Fox Television Studios produces the series from writer, executive producer and series showrunner Veena Sud.

New culinary series Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen fuses science with cooking when it premieres on Syfy March 22 at 10p.  Chef Marcel Vigneron, seen recently on Bravo’s Top Chef All Stars, serves up his bold cooking style known as molecular gastronomy.  Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen is produced by Mission Control Media.

Syfy launches its hi-tech cooking series, Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen on March 22 at 10p.  Chef Marcel Vigneron, seen recently on Bravo’s Top Chef All Stars, serves up his bold cooking style known as molecular gastronomy, a fusion of science and cooking.  Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen is produced by Mission Control Media.

truTV is getting into the antique treasure hunting genre with the new series Big Brian: The Fortune Seller, debuting March 22 at 10p following the network’s series Hardcore Pawn.  Each episode follows estate sale supervisor, Brian Elenson and his team as they scour houses looking for valuable items to sell to the highest bidder. Atlas Media Corp. produces the series.

Comedian Sinbad is getting his own reality show on WE tv as the network approved six one-hour episodes of Sinbad’s Family Affair (wt) premiering April 12 at 10p.  The series goes inside Sinbad’s personal life as he reunites with his family members and makes a career move back to his passion of stand-up comedy.  After its premiere, Sinbad’s Family Affair will air on consecutive Tuesday nights.  ThinkFactory Media produces the series for WE tv.

TLC draws on its INK franchise with a new series NY INK featuring Ami James, who was first introduced to viewers in the series MIAMI INK in 2005.  TLC ordered eight one-hour episodes of NY INK set to premiere in June 2011 following Ami as he strives to become the Tattoo King of New York.  NY INK is produced by Original Media for TLC.

Keith Olbermann’s new show on Current TV will air nightly in the 8p time slot, according to NYT.  The 8p time period is the same as his former show on MSNBC, now occupied by Lawrence O’Donnell, and also opposite Bill O’Reilly on Fox News.  Current TV will likely launch Olbermann’s new show in late May after his non-compete clause in his exit agreement with NBC Universal has expired.

1990s sitcom stars Tia and Tamera Mowry will star in a new docu-series for The Style Network titled Tia & Tamera Take 2. The identical twins starred in Sister, Sister for six seasons and their new reality series will follow them now as adults with Tia pregnant with her first child and Tamera planning her dream wedding.  Style Network ordered six episodes planning a late summer debut of the series produced by Good Clean Fun.

HISTORY renewed its US version of Top Gear for a second season after the first season drew in nearly 60 million.  Top Gear also has the distinction of netting the youngest audience ever of any series for the network.  Season two of Top Gear will commence production this spring helmed by its three hosts – comedian, Adam Ferrara, rally and drift racer, Tanner Foust and racing analyst, Rutledge Wood.  Top Gear is based on the popular BBC series and is a co-production between HISTORY and BBC Worldwide. 

DIRECTV and Entertainment One (eOne) along with producers Amaze Film + Television and BIG Motion Pictures are partnering around a dark comedy series Call Me Fitz which will premiere on DIRECTV’s The 101 Network on April 21 at 9p.  Jason Priestley stars as Richard “Fitz” Fitzpatrick a morally-corrupt though charming used-car salesman who is forced to become a business partner with his inner “conscience” a good guy named Larry.   The series, with thirteen half-hour episodes was created in Canada and ran on HBO Canada during fall 2010.

More ratings from Nielsen on Sunday’s Super Bowl XLV pinpointing that record numbers of African America, Hispanic and female viewers tuned in to help make the event the most-watched television program ever.  Approximately 10 million Hispanic viewers watched, up from 8.3 million viewers in 2010; an estimated 12.5 million African American viewers watched this year compared to 11.2 million last year; and more female viewers got into the action this year totaling 51.2 million versus 48.5 million female viewers in 2010.  Male viewers dominate Super Bowl viewership at 54%. 

FX opened a sophomore season of its drama Justified on Wednesday at 10p attracting 3.47 million total viewers and 1.74 million A18-49 viewers. 

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

3net, the joint 3D television network venture between Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation will roll out via DIRECTV starting this Sunday.  DIRECTV becomes the first distributor to launch the 24/7 3D network and is making it available to their millions of US customers.  3net will begin at 8p on DIRECTV channel 107 with a primetime lineup of world premieres of new hour-long, native 3D original programs including China Revealed and Forgotten Planet as well as the world 3D television premiere of Into the Deep 3D.  During the remainder of February, 3net will debut original 3D series and new program premieres each night at 9p. 

NBC Sports and Universal Sports presents more than 15 hours of live coverage of the USA Sevens Rugby from Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas this Saturday and Sunday.  This marks the first time this sporting event will be aired live on US network television.  NBC Sports will offer two broadcasts during the weekend with four hours of live coverage including the Cup final on Sunday at 430p.  Universal Sports will begin its coverage on Saturday at 2p with 11 hours of live coverage throughout the weekend.

Trifecta Entertainment & Media and Scott Sternberg Productions are representing 36 30m episodes of the web series Live From Daryl’s House in syndication for fall 2011.  Tribune Broadcasting picked up the series and will launch the show to air weekly on seven television stations including WPIX/New York, KTLA/Los Angeles, WGN/Chicago, KDAF/Dallas, KIAH/Houston, KCPQ-KZJO/Seattle and KRCW/Portland. 

Time Warner Cable is making its Whole House DVR service available to its customers on the East Coast.  The new service offers customers the ability to network multiple DVRs and set-top boxes throughout a household and to store up to 75 hours of hi-def programming.  TWC’s Whole House DVR is available on the East Coast to customers in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and NYC, North Carolina and South Carolina. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS picked up a crime drama from J.J. Abrams titled Person of Interest from Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television.  The plot centers on an ex-CIA hitman and a scientist who partner to prevent crimes before they happen.  Jonathan Nolan is writing and will be an executive producer along with Abrams and Bad Robot’s Bryan Burk. 

FOX okayed a medical drama pilot, Weekends at Bellevue based on a book by Dr. Julie Holland.  Lisa Zwerling is penning the script which is based on Holland’s work as a doctor on the emergency psych ward at New York’s notorious Bellevue Hospital.  Zwerling will serve as executive producer with Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein.  Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun are producing.

Production has started on Syfy’s two-hour pilot, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome in Vancouver.  The new Battlestar saga is produced by Universal Cable Productions and utilizes the latest in CGI and virtual technology. 

Amanda Peet was cast as the lead in NBC’s pilot Bent, a single-camera romantic comedy from producer Tad Quill (Scrubs).  Peet will portray a recently divorced single mom who tries to resist her attractive contractor.

USA Network’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent signed Jay O. Sanders as the new captain of the Major Case Squad and boss to Robert Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe).  Sanders will appear in all eight episodes for the show’s tenth and final season.

Jesse Metcalfe nabbed the role of Bobby and Pam Ewing’s son, Christopher on TNT’s updated series version of Dallas.  Additionally, Julie Gonzalo was tapped as Christopher’s fiancée, Rebecca.  The new edition of Dallas focuses on the children of J.R. and Bobby Ewing  J.R.’s son John Ross (Josh Henderson) and his cousin Christopher (Metcalfe) as they battle over the future of the Ewing dynasty. 

Casting Call:  Doron Ofir Casting and Stone & Company Entertainment are casting for a new series titled Connected (wt) and are looking for female bloggers, authors, journalists, internet celebs, writers and storytellers with a point of view and who have the ability to share their life unscripted.  The cast search is officially announced in Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston.  The project is based on the original Israeli docu-series Connected about five women who are all living out their lives in front of a camera and telling their own stories.  Women interested in sharing their personal lives and being a part of this unfiltered docu-series can apply at www.connectedUSAcasting.com .

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:   FOX ranked #1 Wednesday night among A18-49 with a 5.4/14, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  American Idol on FOX was a hit during 8p at 8.4/23 with ABC’s comedies The Middle and Better With You averaging a #2 at 2.3/6.  ABC then topped at 9p with Modern Family and the premiere of new sitcom Mr. Sunshine with an average of 4.4/11 and CBS’ Criminal Minds was next at 3.6/9.  The debut of Mr. Sunshine at 930p posted a 3.7/10.  NBC had the final say at 10p with tried and true Law & Order: SVU at 2.6/7 and CBS’ Blue Bloods placed second at 2.1/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

High Noon Entertainment expands its New York operations and in so doing promoted Executive Producer Art Edwards to become EVP/East Coast to oversee program development of the company’s growing roster of projects emanating from the East Coast.  Furthermore, Megan Lareau also was upped to EIC/East Coast where she will now have responsibility over additional operational duties with an aim to establish the company’s infrastructure in New York.

Steven Andrew named as Creative Director with The Foundation, a unit of Zodiak Media Group where he joins as the first person in this position.  Previously, Steven worked for the BBC as Head/CBBC Production.

Liz Dicker joins A&E Network as VP/Drama Programming, coming from ABC Studios where she served as Director/Current Series for two years.  In her new role at A&E, Liz will develop new scripted drama series and miniseries for the network in addition to managing current series such as The Glades and the upcoming Breakout Kings.  Liz will report to Tana Nugent Jamieson, SVP/Drama Programming.

Vuguru added Carlo Martinelli as VP/Development joining from Bona Fide Productions where he was VP.  In his new position at Vuguru, Carlo will report directly to Kristin Jones, CCO.

Laura Staro advanced to SVP/Research with TLC up from VP/Research, a position she has held since October 2008.  Laura leads TLC’s strategic research activities working with a team she built that specialize in research related to Programming, Scheduling, Development, Marketing, PR, Finance, Commerce and consumer trends.  Laura is based at TLC’s headquarters in Silver Spring, MD.

DIY Network bumped Ross Babbit to SVP/Programming and Partnerships up from VP/Programming and Special Projects.  The network also hired Shannon Jamieson Driver as VP/Consumer Marketing from sister network, HGTV.  Ross manages DIY Network’s original programming and branded entertainment efforts and in addition he works closely with the marketing team on editorial partnerships among other duties.  Shannon will oversee the creation and strategy of the network’s off-channel marketing, partnership marketing, brand extensions, consumer marketing efforts and brand awareness.  Both Ross and Shannon report to Andy Singer, SVP/GM, DIY Network.

Alison Rudnick rejoins HLN as Senior Director in the Public Relations Department.  Alison will work closely with Carolyn Disbrow on behalf of HLN’s brand and program publicity efforts.  Alison was previously a PR Manager at CNN from 2004-2006 and in the meantime has been with Discovery where she held the position of Director/Corporate Communications.
